Definitely a keeper. Was he on Calif 100 list?

Ruffins changed his mind.  Instead of Palo Alto, he is headed to Berkeley.

Shoot

I guess we got outbid for him.

Washington held transfer offers from Western Kentucky, UTEP and Miami (Ohio) among others. He will have one season of eligibility remaining.

(3) I dont know if this ex-NotreDame-Alabama QB Ty Buchner (who is now on the depth chart at NotreDame as a Utility Player/ WR) has any college eligibility left, but if he had 1 more year, it might be good to see if he might be interested in transferring to play QB at StanU. He was pretty good as a Dual-Threat QB when he was at NotreDame 3-4 years ago.

Mendoza to Indiana. His younger brother is a freshman QB there.

A 6’1, 205-pound wideout originally from Southern California, Williams played his freshman season at USC before transferring to the Badgers after head coach Luke Fickell was hired as a top four-star recruit.

However, he struggled to get a consistent role as a sophomore, ending with 15 catches for 158 yards while playing sparingly on the boundary.

This year, with an injury to top outside receiver Bryson Green, Williams took over a starting spot, but that was met with inconsistencies across the board offensively, leading to only 16 catches on the season.

This quote is a bit different than the Wisc roster discussion. Plus, he  knows more about Elijah Brown than we do and that's a good sign.

I was assuming people didn't announce they were transferring until they were sure they would be accepted. I guess that isn't the case.

A fair trade? Who knows?. 3 years with developing player who showed lots of promise, imo, and probably hoped to be the #2 receiver, vs one year of an OK to pretty good receiver who  has experience with our QB.

Of course, there is no guarantee he would have been around for three years.
Perhaps these days you take the veteran player over continuing to develop a young player who may not stay around once he is developed.

RE: Football Offseason / Transfer Portal - msqueri - 12-29-2024

I agree that we should think of roster management one year at a time rather than getting sucked in to thinking about three year projections for people who will face annual opportunities to leave. The problem I have is that even if we are simply optimizing for 2025 the evidence so far is that Cisse is a better receiver than Williams. I don't think it's a guarantee but if I had to bet I think Cisse would be the better receiver for us next year. Oh well.

I wonder if the coaches feel that way too.
If so and they were just bringing in another guy to strengthen the position perhaps you have to check with your key players to make sure they don't get upset and leave.
Roster management is not easy these days. I guess it is true that if you want a player to stick around you can never stop recruiting him.

The thing left unsaid is that Cisse saw his targets reduced in the second half of the year, for reasons that mostly had to do with the emergence of Mosley but that also had a little bit to do with Tiger and Roush getting a few more targets. I can't put this roster loss solely on TT, as it feels from afar like a guy who thinks he's earned something--maybe being penciled in as the "No. 2 receiver" given Elic's departure to the NFL--when it really needs to be an open competition this spring with the new transfers/frosh (not sure if the elite HS recruit is enroling early or not) for playing time/targets.

But it's a loss nonetheless, and another reason for pessismism about 2025.

Big picture, for Stanford's offense to improve under TT there really needs to be a major upgrade at OL. That doesn't appear to be especially close to happening, at least not on paper. We shall see.

I think it is (unfortunately) necessary to do both. Obviously you need a short-term plan but you will also need a multi-branched long term year by year plan. The long term plan will most probably show you who you really need to keep happy and let you plan a response if you fail. It will also point out where you really need to recruit and where you need a "plan B". That can't be ignored. Even your short-term plan has to consider the "art of the possible". Some guys are "gone" no matter what you do, and who those are may not be "obvious" until very late in the planning cycle.

IMO the OL is still the "key". Unfortunately what we need is a Daniels who is a good passer. We cannot "improve" with our projected OL and a QB who can't run. Indeed Daniels being a limited passer set a ceiling on our play. His running ability set a floor. A QB who can't be a credible running threat probably has a much lower floor given our OL. Maybe Bear can be a dual threat answer that checks both boxes, but that is asking a lot of a freshman. Brown OTOH is not known as a runner, so that will probably be a bigger reach.

While I agree that "old man strength" is almost a necessity (with a few exceptions) to be a successful OL player, being "old" is not sufficient to provide that success. There are lots of upperclassmen that play on various OLs in college football that are not good. If one looks at the "bottom tier" of teams in P5 football, their websites almost without exception lament their poor offensive lines. "Everybody" is looking for OL in the portal. Finding good ones at all, let alone ones that can get into Stanford is always going to be difficult. We need to recruit and retain as well as diligently mine the portal. Both are necessary. It isn't going to be easy no matter who the coach is. It will be easier if we become "competitive" again, but still not "easy".

These are supposed to be college students, not part of a roster to be "managed".  Of course I recognize that ship has sailed long ago, but it really kills me that this board is talking like it has given up all pretense that these are supposed to be student athletes not professional football players.

I actually think you are the one with a misplaced sense of what this is all about. This has been professional entertainment longer than either of us have been alive. It had just operated under a system in which powers-that-be cynically used the term "amateur" to describe something that wasn't (it has been adults working a job to entertain people for a long, long time) and colluded to deny monetary compensation to the workers. Football players would not go to the schools they go to were it not for football. The recent move to a more one year at a time, transactional model just gives the employees more agency in this arrangement. That evolution makes it necessary for those administering programs to "manage" them as they try to construct a roster amidst so much player agency.

Fundamentally, these players I talk about "managing" are at Stanford to play football. They wouldn't get into the school were it otherwise and their value to the school is the entertainment and revenue they produce.

I'll go even more fundamental than that: college football has always been an extremely bizarre convenience for communities that want to benefit from the labor of young people in a way that makes them feel a swell of community pride. Everywhere else in the world this is recognized as professional or semi-professional sports. I think if we really were talking about the purpose of universities sports in the way we've defined it for decades would have nothing to do with the conversation. College football is not about college at all and it never has been. It's about entertainment and community. I can't get outraged or sad about the twists and turns of college sports finally bringing it toward greater alignment with that reality.
