Does anybody know what steps Luck and the athletic department took to get a record 6,400+ students to show up when they might otherwise be flying home for Thanksgiving? That was awesome and unexpected. I hope this game inspires a few to be regulars next year.

Yeah - food &/or schwag, plus the allure of actually enjoying something FUN on campus with 6,400 of your besties, especially if the latter includes a humiliating defeat of your sworn, mortal enemies. Other than that....???

Seriously though, it seemed the General was really out personally pounding the pavement with students on campus the prior 2 weeks - he is AL(L) in!

I don't know what he and his organization did, but it was a "good" effort and had good results. It was also very fortunate that these novice (in almost all cases) fans got to see an entertaining event where Stanford prevailed largely due to pure grit and not overwhelmingly superior talent.  It was in many ways a "throwback" game. This kind of result certainly can attract new fans. It isn't a "done deal" by any means, but it IS a start.

entered through Gate 12 about 4:10pm, total wait was <5 min, maybe 10 people in line in front of me.  Biggest issue seemed to be customers not familiar with holding their phones close to the scanners.  We tailgate closer to Gate 10 but that gate is usually more crowded than Gate 12.  Walking over to Gate 12 there were plenty of people actively tailgating in Lot 2 who appeared to be in no hurry to leave their tailgater.

The last time Stanford won a home game vs. Cal, KC Costello was handing off to Bryce Love and Cameron Scarlett and throwing to JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Trenton Irwin and Kaden Smith. It was 2017.

Who was it on the Cardboard who said early in the season that while Stanford was trying to leave intellectual futility and was nowhere near intellectual brutality, we had at least achieved intellectual annoyance (or something like that)? I think Saturday night intellectual brutality was the appropriate term.

We used Gate 10 close to kickoff time.  That's right behind the visitor's corner, which so far this season means it's sparse and easy to get through.  This weekend it was very slow; our fault, I guess, for using it at the one game that will actually draw a notable visiting crowd.  I don't know if the slowness was just due to numbers, though, or if there was any issue with the scanners.

The student section by the tunnel is a bit problematic (I was on the sideline near the students). Stanford players ran over to celebrate with the students but had to wait for Cal players to jog off the field. A few took the opportunity to chirp aggressively and wave goodbye to the Cal players as they waited. One Cal player lightly shoved a Stanford player who was being particularly obnoxious. I didn’t see any other contact. 

Not the classiest move on our part, but who knows. Maybe we were provoked during the game. And hey, it’s Big Game.

Having the student section be in a place where, if the team runs there after a victory, it blocks the opposing team from the leaving the field, is definitely going to cause issues at some point.  Having that also be where the students might rush onto the field if said victory is big and emotional enough, only adds to those issues.  I can see having the students at the tunnel to intimidate the opposing team and give our team more of a home field advantage, but they also need to take into account how these other aspects of it might blow up at some point and not be surprised when it happens.

We won more than the Axe last Saturday.  We are also the holders of the Belt ("lineal" championship) for the first time since 1982 because Cal had carried it with them into Big Game.  I posted about the Belt in a trivia thread a few years ago.

Naturally we should enjoy it for all it's worth, because it's only going to last a week.

I suppose the Stanford players could have been running to the student section, but from my view in the stands it seemed more like 5-6 of them went to jaw at the Cal players and the rest followed.  Two Cal players turned around and started to engage. It was about to turn into something until the coaches separated them.

I highly doubt any football player is intimidated by a student section. :-)  I'm pretty sure the decision to move the students and the Band to the corner around the tunnel was completely for TV purposes.
