Although it's not related to the upcoming season, today's SF Chronicle has an Anne Killion column about Nneka Ogwumike. As president of the WNBA Players Assn., she stuck to her principles and secured a vastly improved contract for the players. It mentions Tara and Jayne Appel-Marinelli as well as Cameron Brink, Nneka's teammate at the LA Sparks.

The new roster is up. Now at 9 wonder where the other 2 transfers stand and the Frosh from Indiana?

Thanks Bob K. Is it possible the unsigned recruits are reconsidering their commitment because of the recent media stories about the 'toxic environment' at Stanford?

Of all 3 transfers, de Vries is the most important for Stanford to compete in the ACC. Kentucky's Kenny Brooks (who knows a thing or two about competing) was actively recruiting her. de Vries is critical because she's 6'3 and strong; she can take her opponent from the high post down to the block and score; she has a decent 3-point shot, but it's her defense and shot blocking ability that stands out. de Vries would be a perfect power forward to play alongside Eschmeyer and with Sotelo, Stanford has a solid front line. Losing her would be catastrophic.

Also, for me, the strength of her recruiting profile - or apparent lack thereof - undercut the impact of her post-season honor. She chose Davidson over Harvard and Ball State on her first go-around. Granted, her self-professed recruiting focus may have been on strong academic schools, but I found it unusual I couldn't find any mention of any offers from P4 schools - zero, zip, nada. Here's hoping she receives sufficient coaching to keep improving to be a solid contributor......

Gilliard had a breakout senior season which explains how she won all the Indiana basketball awards but was not highly ranked or recruited before her senior year. She beat the following Indiana players for those honors:

Lola Lampley - HG#26, LSU
KK Holman - HG#59, Oregon
Myah Epps - HG#70, Louisville
Brooklyn Renn - HG#73, Kansas
