I thought it was mandatory, except in the very few cases of equal evils, in which case Stadium Collapse or the Sweet Meteor of Death are preferred.

It's Cal-USC for the women's water polo title today.

Cal squeaked by LBSU 3-2; Stanford will meet them at 7am PDT tomorrow.  
Four matches went to three sets.  The decisive 4s went to extra points.  LBSU had three match points before the Bears won.

Stanford has beaten Cal twice this year, both times it was 3-2.
Once in Hawaii and once at home.

ETA:
cbvb.com/bracket is listing the odds for each pair match-up.  (This is based on TruVolley computer rankings of the players, which don't have a great reputation for accuracy.)  Anyway, they predict Cal winning the 1s (55.5% probability) and Stanford winning the others (66-75% range each).

They also give a slight edge to FSU over USC, but some of the pairs are almost even.

It came down to the 4s and 5s, both going to three sets.
Stanford dominated both, with the 5s finishing first.
Fisher & Hoffman started the third set with a 7-0 run.

First upset of the tournament:  FSU beat USC 3-0.

Stanford will take on FSU in the first semifinal, which is scheduled for 11:00am PDT.  But they are running well behind schedule, so maybe more like 11:30.

cbvb.com's prediction for Stanford vs. FSU looks similar to the Cal match.
FSU favored at the 1s, Stanford favored in all the others.

Stanford posted that their semi will start 12 minutes after the UCLA/CalPoly dual ends (which just started a few minutes ago).
