RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - cardfan77 - 05-02-2026

So who do we want to play against in the championship? Texas or UCLa?

Stanford is undefeated against Texas (3-0) this year while going 2-2 against UCLA.

I'll go with Texas

Well, the time-honored saying is: “It’s hard to beat a team 3 times in the same season,” but I’m not sure how that cuts in this situation…

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - cardfan77 - 05-02-2026

It will be against UCLA. UCLA eked out a win against Texas 3-2.

Seems appropriate.  Stanford and UCLA have been trading the top ranking all season, and though it was close among all four top teams, I think Stanford and UCLA are the two best in the country.  Not sure who I would give the edge to, but really hoping for our first beach national title.

We're getting the matchup that I hoped we'd get in water polo.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-02-2026

I'd really like to see Belardi and Jackson get a win at the 1s tomorrow.  A tall order against the Bruins' Boyd & Perez.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-03-2026

Not a great start.  Bruins won first set on all five courts.

UCLA wins 3-0.

sigh

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 05-03-2026

Sigh sums it up. Sad finish but what a great season

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - PVTree - 05-03-2026

Good thing for men's gymnastics as the ball hasn't rolled our way in WWP nor WVB. We'd be sweating about the streak. I'm hoping that women's golf can at least give us a second championship.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-03-2026

Only one senior in the starting 10, so hoping for next season.
Stanford has five recruits lined up to join next year.

Avery Jackson can play defense; maybe she will be paired up with one of the young, tall players.
Or with Charlotta Bell.

And womens’s crew.

I really like Jackson with Charlotta Bell for #1s next year.  As fantastic a player as she is, Jackson is not tall enough to block at #1 position.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-14-2026

Stanford's Clara Stowell, paired with Tambre Nobles, won two qualifier matches to make the main draw of the FIVB "Futures" event in Madrid.  Pool play starts tomorrow.

Incoming freshmen Ruby Cochrane and Olga Nikolaeva won their first qualifier match at the AVP Huntington Beach today, but dropped the second.

Meanwhile, alumna Xolani Hodel, continuing her partnership with Hailey Harward, won their three quali matches and are into the MD.  (They were the second seed in the qualifier.)

And as a side note:
The Pavelkova sisters, who played at the 2s for Texas, have left the school after one year to go home and play for the Czech national team.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - paloalto - 05-14-2026

So the 23 year old professional Czech players decided college isn't their thing.

New NCAA rule expected to pass May 22 should help curb this.

"Baker added that he is "pretty optimistic" the new rules will pass. The age-based eligibility would give athletes five years to compete in Division I, starting immediately after their high school graduation or 19th birthday, whichever comes first."

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-15-2026

Stowell & Nobles went 1-1 in pool and advance to tomorrow's elimination bracket.
They lost their first match (fairly badly) to a Spanish team seeded #2, but bounced back against a Belgian team.
Matches are on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/live/WsoQ4VlIvzg?t=3823s
Americans in the light blue tops.

https://youtu.be/Z_QZFAJ_-_4?t=15078
Americans in the gray leggings.  (For the first few points, the score bug still shows the previous match names and score.)

At Huntington Beach, Hodel & Harward lost their first match but won in the contenders bracket, so play again tomorrow.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-16-2026

Stowell & Nobles beat a Norwegian team to advance to the quarterfinals, but lost to another Spanish team.  (Caught the end of that match on youtube.)

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 05-22-2026

Ruby Sorra is in Nuvali, the Philippines (outside Manila), representing Canada with Molly McBain in an FIVB "Challenge" event.  They went 1-1 in pool play and won their first elimination round match.  Matches are on youtube; their round of 24 win is the first on this video, unfortunately in deep shadow:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f3tpt7zX4c

Later today (tomorrow morning Manila time) they play the #1 seed (from Lithuania) in the round of 16.

Xolani Hodel (with Hayley Harward) also went 1-1 in pool, but got upset by a Dutch team in the round of 24.
