Summer Nash. Surfing accident?
That is sad to hear.

Just for context, Summer Nash was a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford for the 2021 season.  Then in the summer of 2022, she was announced as the new (paid) assistant.  But by the time the 2023 season got started, she was no longer listed, and Angela Rock was "filling in" as assistant coach, after serving in that capacity in 2022.

In other news, Billy Allen has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.

And Ofure Odigie is playing in another FIVB Futures event with Emma Cudmore; this one in England.
They won two qualifier matches to make it into the main draw.  Hope they can advance beyond pool play this time.

They went 1-1 in pool, won their first match in the elimination bracket, then lost a close quarterfinal match.
I believe they split 450 euros for finishing tied for fifth.

Another recruit announced.  From her IG bio, looks a 2027 admit.
Sophie Meyer, from Ontario, Canada.

In the CBVA Santa Monica Open on Sunday:

Kate Reilly (alum) and Clara Stowell (rising senior) took second place.

Kyle-Jo Wilson (2027) tied for 5th (playing with Macy Ludwig).

Ruby Cochrane & Olga Nikolaeva (both entering 2026) tied for 19th, playing together (though seeded 2nd; seemed to be a tough pool).
Sam Krystkowiak (2026) also tied for 19th (playing with Sarah Uebelhoer).

Several Stanford players will be competing next weekend in the AVP Denver event.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-04-2026

AVP Denver:
Belardi & Bell (seeded 9) went 1-1 in pool; lost in first round of elimination (close match to #8); finish tied for 9th.

Avery Jackson, playing with Sarah Wood (USC; seeded 6) also went 1-1 but won their first round match to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Alumna Kate Reilly (with Maya Gessner; seeded 10) also went 1-1, and was eliminated in the first round.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-05-2026

Jackson/Woods won their QF (12-21, 21-13, 15-10) but lost their semi, (21-7, 18-21, 12-15).
ETA:  The team that beat them won the tournament.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-06-2026

Kat Anderson, who was on the Stanford beach team 2017-2020 (mostly played at the 5s), has graduated from Stanford Medical School:

The FIVB U18 Beach World Championship is underway in the Hague.  The USA has two women's teams, one seeded in the main draw and the other in the qualifier.  The qualifier team is Simrin Adams (entering Stanford 2027) and Sienna Castillo.  They won their three Q matches to make the main draw today.  In their first match they beat Hong Kong 21-5, 21-5.  Poland gave them more of a fight, 21-12, 21-17.  Then they roasted Turkey 21-7, 21-8.

Adams and Castillo, seeded 25th in the main draw, beat the #8 seed from the Netherlands, 2-0, but lost to the #9 seed from Switzerland, 1-2.  They play their third pool match tomorrow, against the #24 seed (Argentina).  A win guarantees they move on and they would still have a (slim) chance to win their pool.  A loss puts them in danger of elimination, depending on the tie-breakers.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-10-2026

Adams and Castillo did win their third match (2-1), and (at least, unofficially) win their pool, which gives them a first round bye in the elimination bracket. (ETA: The other American team, Leach & McCanna, is in the other half of the bracket.)

Ruby Cochrane (another incoming freshman) won the BVCA 18U National Championship (with Shayla Martinez, UW) in Hermosa Beach:

Last weekend she won a VBCanada tournament in Toronto (with Sophie Hancock).

And one more:  Ashlynn Proctor (2028) won the BVCA 16U championship (with Nariah Johnson):

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-11-2026

Adams and Castillo beat a team from Ukraine to advance to the quarterfinals, but then lost to a German team, so finish tied for 5th.
(The other American team got knocked out in the round of 16.)

ETA:  The German team took the gold.

I missed the fact that the second place team was Sarah Cowan & Lucy Matuszak, two more Stanford recruits (2028).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - paloalto - 07-12-2026

I plan to attend the AVP Junior National Championships in Hermosa Beach next week.  Participating in the 18U division are Stanford recruits Simrin Adams, Ruby Cochrane, and Jojo Wilson.  In an AVP promotional it said Stanford indoor recruit Ashlynn Proctor will be there but she isn't listed as an entrant.

I look forward to your report.

The final of the Vancouver Open (Volleyball Canada) was almost all Stanford.
Ruby Sorra (playing with Molley McBain) beat Charlotta Belle and Kelly Belardi, 31-29, 21-13.
(Ofure Odigie was also entered, but lost in the round of 16.)
