Lex, you forget the past. 2000, the magical first year of what was then called Pac Bell Park. G-men won the division going away, then faced the Mets in the NLDS. I went to game 2, with my 10 year old son on a school night no less, where Giants were down 4-1 in the bottom of the 9th. J.T. Snow hit a 3 run homer just inside the right field foul pole, the most dramatic HR in the park's short history, to tie it up. It was incredible to be there - and then we saw Felix Rodriguez give up the go ahead run as soon as the Mets came up in the 10th.
The Mets took game 3 in the 13th inning. Game 4, facing elimination, Mark Gardner was pitching. Down 2-0, the Giants loaded the bases with 2 outs in the top of fifth, with the pitcher's spot due up. Yes, Gardner batted. Giants were one-hit and shut out. A long winter ensued.

Betts and Duvall are Yaz's competitors. Yaz has the highest OOA (Outs Over Average) among the trio. Betts has won five gold gloves in a row, including last year. Duvall had 12 outfield assists, the most among the group.

Crawford has won three GG's (last in 2017), and is going up against Francisco Lindor (leads with 20 OAA) and Kevin Newman.

BTW, Patrick Bailey is tearing it up in the Arizona Fall League at .333/.419/.519/.938.

Also, Stanford's Austin Slater led the Giants in SBs with 15, against just two caught stealing.

Buster Posey to announce his retirement tomorrow.
I did not see that coming. But we all knew he is a dedicated father.
And, to revisit that question raised before on this thread - Don't see him as a manager any time soon.

It is sad for us fans, but maybe actually good for the Giants. Next year could be great, horrid, or anywhere in between. Buster was probably a one more year guy at best, and that not full time. The Giants were going to need a new catcher pretty soon anyway. Maybe better to make the change in a clean break after a good year rather than after a potentially less good year?

Best catcher in Bay Area history. And I say this as an old A's fan of World Series Past (Duncan, Fosse, Steinbach). And I remember Giants: Lonus Edgar Bailey, Tom Haller, Bob Brenly, Benito Santiago...No comparison to Buster.

Not sad at all. 2021 bought him a place in Cooperstown. Maybe not first ballot but second or third. He joins only a few other greats in retiring when the time was right. Elway for one. Charlie O'Connell, but he came back about five times. Bill Russell.

Other guys hanging on way too long. Mays chief among them. Plunkett.

Buster has all the qualities to be a great manager. But I agree with you.

Plunk won two Super Bowls with the Raiders late in his career. How long after the last one did he retire? And wasn't he a backup/injured a lot after the SB wins? I don't know, I favor any athlete sticking around as long as they love/want to play and a team will pay him to do it. And I say that even though I agree some athletes appear to me to hang on too long.

Buster was a terrific catcher, best all-time for the Giants and the SF Bay Area. Better JAWS rating (7-year peak career WAR average) than Bresnahan or Ewing, Campanella or Elston Howard, Bailey or Haller. He's #14 on the career list for full time catchers, and only Thurman Munson isn't in the Hall of Fame (Joe Mauer is still active).

I doubt he'll manage. I think he wants to walk away. He strikes me as a lot of my co-workers -- the last 1 1/2 years sequestered because of COVID has changed him. He did well this year, but I think he wants family time. Maybe he wants out of California, who knows?

This hurts. I don't think either Bart or Bailey (yet) are the solution. I think we're heading for a free agent, especially after the salary that's been freed up, but this is a weak market. Yan Gomes, who's average, then a big dropoff to a bunch of .200 +/- hitters.

Ten months ago, Joey Bart was considered to be the 2nd best catching prospect in all of the minor leagues. He hit .294, OBP of .358, OPS of .831, 10 HRs and 46 RBIs in 252 ABs. Maybe he's the answer.

I think being a dad is priority #1, especially if you have (or should have) all the money you will never need.

Isn’t Contreras a free agent? And aren’t there any more Molina’s in the pipeline. Maybe Albert.

I think SF will go with Bart and Casali at the big league level and sign a veteran free agent to play at Sacramento and be ready in case of injuries…..

He's a family guy, for sure. And I think raising children is one of those activities that is really easy to do badly and really hard to do well. I have a hyper-accomplished relative who is doing an awful job raising her kids in part because she isn't investing the time and in part because she isn't listening to family members who have been very successful raising their kids.

Buster doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who does things poorly or half-heartedly. So I'm not surprised that he's retiring with his Scrooge McDuck-level of money. Easy to walk away from $22 million.

I agree. In a way, it is even more a tribute to them when they play with diminished skills. It is one thing to go out there and compete when you know you are better than everybody else. It is another when you go out there knowing you are not and that it will take 110% to be even adequate. I guess I relate more to the latter.

I hope that is what they do. Casali played pretty well this year. If Bart has it, giving him a year to prove it makes sense. No need to find a long-term solution if no obvious candidate out there.
