By the way, Dodgers fans are bringing out the long knives. One of their primary complaints is about the inability of the their farm system to produce position players for the big club. Only two home grown position players (Outman and Smith) were on their post season roster. Bellinger and Seager were let go and, other than at the catching position, there is little in the pipeline.
The post season collapses are obviously having an effect - only one WS (in a truncated season) during the Friedman era. And speaking of Friedman, there are a number of complaints about his control of Roberts (sound familiar?).
In today’s game, you only need to win enough to get to the post season. After that, it is anyone’s guess who can win it all. I’ll try to remember that next year after the Braves and Dodgers post 100+ win regular seasons and the Phillies and Giants squeak into the playoffs.

If I were a Dodger fan I’d be critical of their inability to pick up a decent starting pitcher at the deadline. Lance Lynn doesn’t count.
But if you think about it, it’s remarkable they won 100. If they were mapping their ‘23 rotation a couple years ago, it was - Buehler, Bauer, Urias, Kershaw, May.
They had Kershaw for about 2/3 of year, ditto Urias, none of the other 3. Add Gonsolin being hurt. And Trienen. They also let Trea Turner Justin Turner and Bellinger go. (And Seager the year before) And had Lux go down for the season.
Course Betts, Freeman, Smith, Martinez (how did they get him for $ 10 Mill. Giants paid twice that for half the production) and Muncy make up for a lot of things. Yes, you do need “stars”.

Interesting article in The Athletic by Brisbee this a.m. Basically, if the Giants had signed Dansby Swanson (instead of Correa/nobody) at shortstop, or even Xander Bogaerts -- which I had advocated all season -- the Giants make the playoffs, based on the positive WAR (Bogaerts 4.4) vs. negative WAR (Crawford, -1.4).
And obviously, Arson Judge (4.5 WAR) would have gotten the Giants to the postseason. The Giants OF was terrible. Yaz (2.3 WAR), Slater (0.7), Conforto (0.7), Haniger (-0.3) and Matos (-0.4) were a net 3.0 WAR. If either Conforto or Haniger have a good season, the Giants are in the playoffs. Nolan Jones (traded to Rockies) was worth 4.3 WAR. Cody Bellinger (4.4 WAR). Christian Yelich (3.6 WAR). Two of those...we're in the playoffs. Or trade for former SF draftee Brian Reynolds (2.5 WAR).
At DH, Pederson (0.6) was a hot mess. I've wanted to get JD Martinez (1.9 WAR) for years, ever since I saw him in a few games for the Tigers.
Giants tried hard for Senga (4.5 WAR). Bassitt (2.5 WAR). Eovaldi (3.1 WAR), or Wheeler (4.0 WAR) would have been helpful. Instead, we have Stripling (0.1 WAR, and complaining about the way he was used - Mr. Stripling, if you want to be used better, you need to pitch better), DeSclafani (0.2 WAR), Wood (0.7 WAR) and Manaea (0.3 WAR).
Basically, every Giants free agent turned to mush. Every. Single. One. It says something that two of the mushees (Conforto and Manaea) are rumored to want out. Man, do I hope they leave.

It also says something that Farhan Zaidi has made clear that having a manager "with social charm" is one of the priorities. If you think about it, Carlos Correa probably was willing to sign with Giants because the team's "numbers over people" mindset resonated with him from his time in Houston.
All the other top free agents seem to have been turned off by the cold, nerdy, plastic personalities of Farhan and Gabe, and the Giants wouldn't spend what was needed to overcome that. I still don't like how Gabe was fired before the season finished. I thought that was a petty move that accomplished absolutely nothing other than make the Giants look silly. But, in a roundabout way, if there is currency to Gabe turning off some of the better free agents, and then not connecting with players during the season, there was cause to fire him.

Adding up WAR as a method of determining roster strength is what got Giants in trouble this off season. I remember stories about their great depth because hey just add up the WAR and add water…
Bogaerts certainly would have helped. But doing the WAR math dance is determinate of nothing. It’s a baseball team. Not a math equation.
Agree with you on wanting Manaea and Conforto to leave. Especially Conforto. Having Haniger, Slater, Conforto and Yaz all back is a depressing thought.

Signing Bogaerts to an 11 year $280 million contract at age 30 was among the worst signings of the off-season. The Giants made the right move by not going in that direction (and they got very lucky by listening to the physician who checked out Correa).
I also read Brisbee’s article and thought it was one of his worst. He took a very narrow view of the situation and reached a flawed conclusion. Like Lex, I am not a great fan of simply adding up WAR numbers to determine the strength of a team. The Padres had a terrible year despite being loaded with star players. It takes more than just throwing money and WAR numbers on the field figuring that should be enough.
The Giants failed because they lack a singular presence in the clubhouse and lineup every day surrounded by young, athletic teammates on an upward track in their careers.
Signing a bunch of mid-level, injury-prone veterans was a major mistake. Also, it didn’t help that the manager of the team was a guy who felt the team could police itself. You don’t need a micromanager to win but you do need a guy who the players respect and isn’t afraid to kick ass when necessary.

Patrick Bailey has been listed as a Gold Glove finalist. If he wins, he'd be the first rookie Gold Glove catcher since Charles Johnson of the Marlins in 1995. The other two are Gabriel Moreno (AZD), and JP Realmuto (PHL). Bailey led all catchers and ranked second overall with a fielding run value of +18, including +16 from pitch-framing.

(Or would have been had they kept such a stat). As for the umps -all tend to have some horizontal or vertical leeway. Thus, if you have an ump known to expand the corners, does that impact the pitch framing calculation?
Finally, if they go to Robo Umps (The KBO just announced that they are going that route) how much is Baileys value diminished.
His GG nomination is in part due to his CS rate. Which was very high, even though it dropped from his Sept numbers. (I ignore the Sept numbers cause Kapler played him into exhaustion.) But it’s largely due to framing. His ball blocking skills were far from statistically elite. He led the NL in passed balls.

He was also #1 in errors, with 13 (he was tied in both categories with Alvarez, and Sabol had 6 passed balls vs. Bailey's 8, though he caught about 1/2 the innings).

I would add that his “runs saved above average” was second in the NL to Moreno due in great part to his “pop time” (second in the NL to Realmuto). 1.87 seconds from receiving the pitch to the time it reaches the glove of the second baseman/shortstop is amazing.
I don’t think Bailey will win the award this year but he will certainly be in the mix for one or more in the future.

I'll never understand the letting Dubon go. Not only did he show well in the infield for the Astros, he plugged in fairly often in the outfield, and he was a Giant lifer. A clown car of try outers followed.

What a couple of fantastic CS games last night!
I will admit to having watched very little of the playoff games this year, maybe a few innings out of all the games live. But last night I watched the last 3 innings of the ALCS and most of the NLCS.
Is Jose Altuve the most clutch hitter ever? And to get to that point...
A Houston Pitcher beaned a Rangers player who had earlier homered, and become the 2nd runner on base in the 8th inning with the rangers already leading 4-2. He had flagrantly celebrated hitting the HR that gave his team the lead in his previous AB. Both benches cleared and the umps eventually decided to throw out the Pitcher and Hitter.
Dusty Baker lost his mind, thinking there was no way it was intentional, because why would the Astros intentionally put someone on base in the 8th inning of a Game 5 they trailed by 2 at the time? Dusty got tossed, and then refused to leave the dugout. Meanwhile, the Rangers reliever who pitched the top of the 8th was sitting for like 20 minutes. Bruce Bochy was trying to get the game moving, knowing his reliever was getting cold. Baker ultimately left, but he got as long a delay as possible, intentional or not. Then the Rangers reliever came back out for the 9th, gave up two baserunners, and Altuve promptly hit the go-ahead and GW 3R-HR. Then the Rangers got the tying run on base in B9 but couldn't get him in. Gonna be tough to overcome that loss, but if any manger can get his team to do it, that manager is Bruce Bochy.
No home team has won a game in the ALCS. No home team has lost in the NLCS.
The D-Backs showed me a lot coming from down 5-3 to win 6-5 against the Phillies. Their youngsters that were reason the D-Backs had the #2 or #3 Farm System in MLB before this season, delivered in a big way. Still, the Phillies have Wheeler and Nola, as basically staff Aces ready to pitch Game 5 and Game 7, the two most pivotal games. I like their chances.

Attitudinally speaking, I really liked Dubon, who had committed to the Giants early on and was a Giants fan.
He was consistent in 2019 and 2020, with BA's in the mid to high .270s and OPS in the low to mid .700s. His OPS+ was 100 and 98 those two years. Fine for a second baseman.
But in 2021, he dipped to .240/.278/377/.655 and in 2022 he dropped to .214/.252/.313/.565. He was heading south in a hurry, and in fact, he actually did worse with Houston the rest of the year. And this year, he rebounded. He's still below average, an OPS+ of 97, and to me. It happens. Good for him. Having 492 plate appearances probably helped him. Only 70 strikeouts, not bad.

Last December, the DBacks made a trade with the Jays for Moreno and Gurriel, giving up Daulton Varsho. That was the best trade by any team last off-season.

What a couple of fantastic CS games last night!
I will admit to having watched very little of the playoff games this year, maybe a few innings out of all the games live. But last night I watched the last 3 innings of the ALCS and most of the NLCS.

A Houston Pitcher beaned a Rangers player who had earlier homered, and become the 2nd runner on base in the 8th inning with the rangers already leading 4-2. He had flagrantly celebrated hitting the HR that gave his team the lead in his previous AB. Both benches cleared and the umps eventually decided to throw out the Pitcher and Hitter.
Dusty Baker lost his mind, thinking there was no way it was intentional, because why would the Astros intentionally put someone on base in the 8th inning of a Game 5 they trailed by 2 at the time? Dusty got tossed, and then refused to leave the dugout. Meanwhile, the Rangers reliever who pitched the top of the 8th was sitting for like 20 minutes. Bruce Bochy was trying to get the game moving, knowing his reliever was getting cold. Baker ultimately left, but he got as long a delay as possible, intentional or not. Then the Rangers reliever came back out for the 9th, gave up two baserunners, and Altuve promptly hit the go-ahead and GW 3R-HR. Then the Rangers got the tying run on base in B9 but couldn't get him in. Gonna be tough to overcome that loss, but if any manger can get his team to do it, that manager is Bruce Bochy.

The D-Backs showed me a lot coming from down 5-3 to win 6-5 against the Phillies. Their youngsters that were reason the D-Backs had the #2 or #3 Farm System in MLB before this season, delivered in a big way. Yep. They had a surplus of good young left handed OFs. (Varsho can also catch.) Dealt from strength and got a terrific return. Giants don’t have that kind of major league capital. They do have a lot of promising arms. If they make a key trade, that is where I expect teams to look.
