Yes or no?
This trade proposal was made by Jim Bowden at The Athletic…..
I would make the trade only if I felt I had a very good chance of signing Soto to a long term deal.
No way.

Jung-Hoo Lee from the KBO is an alternative if the Giants can convince him to sign. Given their recent track record with free agents, I am rather skeptical they will be successful.
Other than that, Belanger is the only proven OF (chance of him signing w/ SF is low) and the Giants need a guy in the outfield who can play regularly and can make a difference both hitting and fielding.
Yep - time to take a chance and make a trade. The status quo is not acceptable.
Bob Melvin is in the mix!!

Given his strong connection to Japanese and Korean players, this would help the Giants in their effort to sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Lee.
It is still a dream but I think there is a decent possibility he will agree to terms with SF.

If Coach Melvin can get in a raft of Japanese and Korean stars and other free agents, communicate with a few prima donnas on the current team, improve a raft of second-year players who might be impervious to conventional improvement means, connect with the fans, bring business back to downtown SF, bring the stores back to Union Square, re-open 1,200 restaurants shut down during COVID, cure cancer and invent cold fusion, then he will satisfy the SFG fans...

If nobody is going to talk about actual baseball being played in 2023, can we just start a Giants 2024 season thread?
It's a little silly to be talking about 2024 in the 2023 season thread.
Anyway, Bochy is a master of getting his teams to put devastating losses behind them, and he now has his team one game from the World Series (again), in an epic Game 7 tonight. The home team has yet to win a game in the ALCS this year, and the game is in Houston. But Max Scherzer has been terrible this postseason. Can he summon his once greatness and give his team a chance against a much more recently proven Christian Javier????
I'm not giving the D-Backs any chance to force Game 7 in Philly tonight. Expect to see them melt in the environment they will be in.

I wonder how Charles Johnson and Zaidi feel about watching two former SF Giants managers manage against each other in the ALCS?
Similarly wonder how Johnson feels about Zaidi, given that he was principally responsible for selecting all the players.

You hit the mark on the wins. Rodon didn't do much blowing away of guys this year. In exchange for his 6 year, $157 million contract, he finished 3-8 this year with a 6.85 ERA. And he's 31 next year. At least Arson Judge got in almost 2/3rds of the Yankee games (he played in 106).
Gausman finished 12-10 in 2022 and 12-9 this year. Was it worth 5 years, $112 million? He'll be 33 this year.

In terms of signing guys on the team to new contracts, Gausman stands out as the most glaring error made by Zaidi.
Some numbers
2022 ERA 3.35 (league average 3.88) Top Ten Cy Young
2023 ERA 3.16 (league average 4.28) Top 10 WAR, Top 5 ERA, All-Star selection.
Yes, he was worth the contract he received. Heck, he has exceeded the value.
Note: I did not advocate signing him to a new deal.
As for Rodon, I was definitely against resigning him. His injury history was very problematic. I don’t see him ever achieving the numbers he posted as a Giant.
One wrong choice, one right choice.

Good for Bochy that the Rangers are in the WS. I'm rooting like crazy for them to win the Series. Bochy has managed 26 seasons, this was his fifth best record. BTW, Bochy has the fifth most postseason wins of all managers, 53. He is four behind Dusty Baker who has 57. If the Rangers win the WS, Bochy will have tied Dusty for most postseason wins all time.

Chas Johnson is in his 90’s and has no role other than his ownership interest. He’s always an easy mark, for reasons we won’t discuss. But it’s interesting to me that the media so often gets it wrong. They sometimes refers to Johnson (Greg and Chas) as “ “majority owners.” That is wrong. They own about 27%. Principal owners as they have the highest share. It’s an LLC. And while I’ve never read the operating agreement, I’m confident it has a mechanism for selecting and ousting the Chairperson. . Even if under the OO the principal owner is automatically the Chairperson, there has to be a way to oust.
So, when Greg Johnson fumbles through his speech, it’s fair to assume he’s speaking for the group. If they disagree with the direction, they could choose a new chair.
Personally, I think Greg is a lousy spokesperson. Buster would be tremendous. But I suspect one has to have a certain percentage to possibly be the Chair.

The key is who is the “control person”, a designation required by MLB that identifies the person who has the team’s vote at ownership meetings. Greg Johnson is the control person for the Giants. It is my understanding the control person is determined by a vote of the partnership. I have no idea how the voting process works.
And yes, there is a process in place that can oust the control person. For example, Bill Neukom was in charge in 2010 but subsequently had a falling out with his partners and was removed from the leadership position. And, of course, there is the infamous Larry Baer incident that resulted in his removal as the control person in favor of Rob Dean on an interim basis and then Greg Johnson. As noted the Johnson family owns less than 30% of the shares.
