Don Drysdale held the scoreless innings record before Hershiser; it was controversial because he hit a batter (against the Giants)  with the bases loaded, which would have ended the streak, but the umpire ruled the batter didn't try to get away from the pitch and refused to award him first base.

Jim Barr of the Giants at one time held the record for most batters retired in a row. Something like 42. It's since been broken.

And coincidentally Hershiser's streak was also preserved via a controversial overturned call vs the Giants. SF scored a run during a force out at second base followed by an overthrow to first base. But Paul Runge ruled that Brett Butler had interfered with the fielder at second and declared an inning ending double play instead. This was during the 43rd inning of Hershiser's streak; the Drysdale call was during the 45th inning of his streak.

You made me look it up.  I was right, Faulk led the league in career receptions with 767.  Craig only had 566 and ranks 8th.
