Mississippi state was ranked 10. And Oregon lost to #8 Louisville.

By the unofficial rules of these things, I expect us to be ranked #1. But what I’ve seen hasn’t convinced me this is the #1 team in the country. We struggled just two games ago against Cal Baptist. We ended this game on a 3-15 run, when we had a chance to slam the door shut. Gonzaga gave us trouble as well.

But a win is a win, and a win against ten #10 team in the country when the two teams ahead of you lose usually means you jump them.

Agreed that we may not be the best team right now, but we should move up to #1. What's impressive to me is the quality of play by our freshmen. Haley Jones had a huuge game tonight. Belibi also played well. Jump was a phenom against the Cuse. I think that this team will get better and better as the season moves forward and these freshman get more game experience. Tough games like this one tonight and the Gonzaga overtime win are better for team development than easy blowout wins.

A lot of really good freshmen playing on both teams.

- Haley is so smooth. Some really pretty pull-up jumpers from her just made me go wow. She is fun to watch.

- Fran was terrific in her minutes. She was exposing their center.

- Rickea Jackson for them is going to be really good. She is similar to Haley in that they both score so well.

Are we the best team in the country? We probably have the greatest potential for getting even better than we are at the moment--given that freshmen get better and given that we have injured players who hopefully are coming back.

Why don't we put teams away when we have the lead in the second half? That is a hallmark of inexperience. That will get better--perhaps not until we lose a game that way.

As for this game, as I noted above, we outplayed MSU in virtually every single category--except our 20 turnovers. And that is the MSU strategy. That is what Vic Shaeffer trains his team to do. We were the superior team--good enough that we could spot MSU 14 extra possessions (they had 6 turnovers) and still beat them.

Other unbeaten teams include UConn, A&M, Oregon State, and Louisville. Are we better than all of those teams? Hard to know without playing them, but we are better than Mississippi State. Louisville had the most impressive win. UConn hasn't really played anybody yet. A&M had a shaky win against Rice so no better than us, surely. Oregon State beat 19 Miami, but that was no better than our win over Syracuse.

Louisville is the only logical team to possibly pass us. But while it beat Baylor, it really has only one quality win over a ranked opponent while we have three.

Yes, we deserve to be #1--for now.

Now, if we get Carrington and Williams and Dodson back, all healthy, after the two week break, then watch out.

As for Williams, this from AP:

Her leg is obscured from view, but she is happy, cheering on Nadia, and seems to moving on it. She clearly was not in great pain. Let's hope it was just a contusion and nothing more serious. She has a couple of weeks to get healthy. As do Carrington and Dodson.

By the way, did Dodson travel with the team? Carrington and Brewer seemed to be there, but I never saw Dodson. Anyone spot her on the bench?

Here are the 3 game totals for our three most active freshmen:

Belibi had 24 points, 14 rebounds, 0 assists and 4 blocks.
Jump had 30 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist.
Jones had 40 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks.

How many of us, before the season began, would have expected totals like that from our freshmen in November? Prechtel has had a couple of awesome games, too, although not on this trip for some reason.

Now Fingall, the tournament MVP:

28 points, 25 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 blocks.

Miss State came back from 15 point deficit, but we ended up winning 67-62. We earned a crystal plaque for winning the Invitational Tournament; Haley Jones was selected to the All Tournament team; and Nadia Fingall earned the MVP Award for the Tourney.
As for our position in the national rankings, three wins at the Tournament (two against top 25 ranked teams, should keep us in good standing). And defeats this weekend for both #1 Oregon and #2 Baylor should move us up from our #3 national ranking.
It’s been a beautiful few days in Victoria, even with the temperatures dipping close to freezing. The downside was seeing Kiana get tackled, pinned to the floor, and having to be helped off the floor, not to return. (Last year in Honolulu we stood in horror waiting for Anna to regain consciousness after taking a shove into some court-side chairs.)
The upside was seeing the team close around Nadia (who also get banged around in this tournament) after the game after she had won the MVP Award. When the huddle broke up I was touched to see that some of the players, including Nadia were wiping away tears Of happiness.
Job well done to our excellent team!!!

Wasn't able to see the game, but sounds like we "won ugly" - and I'll take it! Given that we were missing 1.5 of our presumptive starters (Carrington + Dodson), that Williams wasn't there with her steady hand late in the 4th, and that the reffing really seemed to favor their style of play, it's encouraging we could rely on our frosh to step up.

Just from looking over the box score, it also looks like Lacie had a good game, and I think that's the first time I can remember where both Hulls were significant offensive contributors in the same game. It seems like in most games either one, or the other, is on fire.

One question I had from looking at the box score: it looked like Belibi was extremely efficient in her limited minutes early on. Could anyone who saw the game understand why Tara didn't leave her in more?

I feel like Wilson is regressing a bit this season - her shooting really seems off so far. She's definitely an asset for us defensively, but her efforts don't seem to be translating on the offensive end. To that end, I do think one of the (few) downsides to having so much depth is that fewer players get enough playing time to get work out kinks. It's kind of strange how little time Prechtel got after being such a contributor for us during our first five games. I'm assuming that's because she's still a work-in-progress on defense, but without having seen any of these games, it's hard to glean more than that.

Fingers crossed everyone can get healthy with two weeks off for finals. I don't think we'll stay in the hunt for No. 1 very long is we're missing Carrington, Dodson, and Williams...

I thought it was odd that Belibi did not get more time in the second half, too. I'm not sure why. Jerome had a great 3rd quarter, and Jones was not going to come out very much--so that might explain part of it.

I'm also wondering about Prechtel in this tournament after I pronounced her our best "big" earlier in the year. I think Fingall's reemergence in this tournament probably has a lot to do with it. Until Victoria I was not convinced that Fingall was ever going to really come back into form after her injury. I was wrong. Most impressive, I saw Fingall jumping for the first time since last year--she was pretty flat footed in earlier games. And her offense around the basket was vastly improved from just a week or so ago. Let's hope she can stay in that zone, but if she can and if Jones plays the four there just are not that many minutes to distribute through the big rotation.

As for Wilson, her offense has been off for some time. She is 3/16 on the year and 3/10 from three point range. She has not really taken enough shots to create very meaningful data. Last year she shot 40% overall and 26% from three. Her sophomore year she shot 30% overall and 29% from three. And her freshman year her numbers were too tiny, with all the injuries, to be significant. I am sure that her shooting--very possibly related to all the injuries interfering with the rhythm of the game--is the only reason she did not ultimately become a starter--possibly replacing Sniezek. We know at times she can get hot and shoot well, as she did did against Ohio State when she hit 7/8 three point shots. In the meantime, I see her becoming a player a little like Ros was by the time she was a senior--a defensive specialist we place on the opponent's best small guard. Wilson seems to be able to stay in front of them better than Williams does. So I imagine Wilson will spend time defending Aari McDonald, Japreece Dean, etc.

I would strongly guess that Fingall’s defense was why she played the second half and was MVP. Ok I know that’s the reason. :)

Usually you can be “fine” pre-ACL (and in fact, for some non-athletes who are somewhat sedentary, they can elect not to have their ACL’s reconstructed). That’s because typically the surgeons wait a few weeks for the swelling to go down before operating, and you don’t need an ACL for walking. The immediate aftermath of the surgery, there is limited mobility, but now days recovery to walking can be fairly quick. I believe another poster here is an orthopedic surgeon and can add some more specifics.

In 1976 my Dr who was also the 49er team Dr said well you aren’t Joe Namath so let’s try rehab. Worked ok except playing rec softball I ran like well couldn’t run much

Dodson was at the game, wearing her customary boot. Kiana’s knee was wrapped in ice during the post-game awards ceremony. She was walking with a limp in the airport. Given the nature of her take-down during the game—she laid face down after her much-larger tormentor got up and walked away—I was concerned for her health! If she escapes with a just bruised knee, we (and she) will be fortunate.
