Well they didn't answer my question on the Zoom but Hambly said 8 so many times I think we know it's just 8 again.

Yep. Eight total players. We are working from a brobdingnagian disadvantage at this point. We just have to make the best of it. The team's heart seems to be in the right place. The first match at AZ they looked absolutely shell-shocked and not ready to play D-1 volleyball. The second match, they didn't look very good but at least looked like they belonged on the court. I am just looking for continued improvement with a makeshift roster that has had almost no time to get their game anywhere near the high level that we are used to. I'm happy with the way the coaches are approaching this situation and will try my best to be patient with whatever happens this season. That said, "Beat Cal!"
Cheers,
Pete F.

Eight players again? I expect the same as last weekend. The debacle starts in about an hour.

But lose the 5th 15-12 and the match. As others have noted, the first loss to Cal in a decade.

Stanford falls to #23. Next opponent WSU is #17.

Utah has a Covid problem so cancelled this weekend games vs Oregon. We needed them to beat each other.

I love your optimism BobK. We have one victory thus far and you're looking at strategies how we will win the PAC-12.
Did you see Nuneviller won PAC-12 offensive and defensive POW. Maybe next year Oglivie at OH is feasible.
I'm interested in the status of Lougeay. She was the only player not at last weekend's match. A little puzzling to me right now. If it was a ten day quarantine she should have been finished with that. If it was injury I would expect her to show up at the match on crutches or in a boot.

With Baird, Kipp and Francis the three pin hitters I don't see Oglivie moving one of them to the bench
Arm injuries don't require boots, LOL J/K
You know only 16 at large to the NCAAs this year not 32 as normal. Stanford needs lots of wins and they missed 4 games.

I believe this video explains Lougeay. Hambly said one player on the team contracted Covid. That's likely Lougeay.
Hambly said they were close to opting out of the season right before SCC allowed them to practice indoors. I get the feeling if SCC's decision had been one week later there would have been no Stanford WVB Spring season.

I respectfully disagree. I think all the firepower at the net doesn't matter if no one can pass the ball. Let's look at our first three matches this year where the passing was pretty bad. You had Oglivie (good passer) passing 6 rotations, Baird (not great passer) passsing 6 rotations and Berty (really not great passer) passing 6 rotations. And remember that Kipp's passing is a level below Berty otherwise she would have been passing. Next year, if Oglivie remains at libero then Baird has to pass 6 rotations and Kipp has to pass 3-6 rotations depending if she is DS'd in the back row or not. That's 1/3rd of our passing that is good and 2/3rds of our passing that has to get a lot lot better over the course of one year. The alternative is Oglivie at OH2 passes 6 rotations, Louegay or the new DS at libero passes 6 rotations and then you have Baird pass 3 rotations and you DS her in the back row. Suddenly 5/6ths of your passing is good. And if you are concerned about Oglivie's hitting, you still have Kipp in for 6 rotations hitting out of the front or back row.

Since indoor WVB is going nowhere, maybe I will become a beach vb fan. I wonder if they will allow fans since it's an outdoor venue. My oldest son lives in Palo Alto so I could visit him and watch a match the same weekend. First home match isn't until April 3 even though Stanford has the best college beach facility in the country.
Pre-conference schedule starts next week and is two matches against Long Beach State, two matches against UCLA (pre-conference), one match against Pepperdine.
That guarantees a 0-5 start which is ok with me because it helps improve player skills to play better competition.
