RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - treetop11 - 12-05-2021

Who do we have coming in next year? We need several better players in order to once again compete at high level. We only have 4 now who are very good and so far they still aren't at the high level of stars we have had in the past. I agree with those who criticize our serving. It's not just the high number of errors, but about 80-90% of our serves are easy for opponents to return. And too often the serves allow a good pass for good sets and easy points. Almost every match I've seen, our opponent makes serving much harder on us than vice versa.

Those 5, 6 point runs we seem to allow often are because our serve receive and passing just aren't very good

RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - johnbar - 12-05-2021

Two years ago (Dec, 2019) Stanford WVB won the National Championship (3rd in 4 years) and said good-bye to one of the outstanding classes of seniors.  2020 was going to be a rebuilding year, no way around that.

On top of that, two DSes, Kate Formico and Sidney Wilson, opted out of their senior year.  Stanford would have one senior in 2020.
And Denise Corlett retires.

Then COVID-19 shut things down.  No Spring practice. No Spring conditioning.
Santa Clara County imposes some of the tightest restrictions in the country.
No fall practice.
Covid and injuries plague the Spring, 2021, season. Not enough healthy players to scrimmage, or even play a match at times.
McClure graduates.

So Fall, 2021, is a reset.
But unlike many other top schools, Stanford has no 5th-year seniors.  They have one senior and one junior playing.
And injuries again take a toll.

So, no, it is not all due to Covid.  But it certainly exacerbated a difficult situation.

I certainly have questions and concerns going forward.  But I hope the next year will see a return to a more normal (dominant) team.

After watching the MN game I have concerns. MN seemed to be getting more velocity on their swings. They generally seemed quicker and more athletic. Sami would benefit from upper body strength training.

Team will seriously miss Holly Campbell. Consistency and smart. Oglivy and Miner will have a year of experience, should improve a lot next year.

RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - M T - 12-05-2021

By the way, Miner did quite well on jousts at the net.  My impression earlier in the year was that we were losing all the jousts, but we did well against Minnesota.

Yes, Campbell would be valuable on any team. I appreciated her intelligent play.

Regarding "Sami would benefit from upper body strength training.", I expect all colleges from Division III and up are doing such, so I expect she is benefiting from it.   Not everyone develops to the same level at the same pace.  That's why you have some Kathryn Plummers and others that aren't as strong a hitter.  Few people have fully matured in body size and strength as a freshman (Sami).  (She's obviously grown tall quickly.  It usually takes longer to fill out. Personally, I wasn't anywhere near that tall, but I was doing everything I could do to add body weight at that age.  Remember Nutrament?)

(To clarify: The following is motivated by an earlier post, not the immediately preceding post)
Everyone, please, try to keep a civil demeanor on the Cardboard.  If someone is getting under your skin, you can always add them to your ignore list.  You won't see their posts (except when quoted, or when you choose to view a post).

Thanks MT.  I wholeheartedly agree.  Nothing that anyone posts here is worth getting upset over.

Does anyone here care about the tournament now?

#12 Minnesota down a set to #5 Baylor on ESPNU.

#15 Texas takes on #2 Texas and #13 UCLA goes up against #4 Wisconsin today as well.

RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - BobK - 12-09-2021

In Stanford's regional, 12th overall seed Minnesota comes from behind to beat 5th overall  seed Baylor,
3-2 and 15-10 in the 5th set, to advance to the Elite 8 vs the winner of 4th overall  seed Wisconsin
and 13th overall seed UCLA.

Minnesota's sophomore OH1 WENAAS is simply a stud of a hitter!

RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - johnbar - 12-09-2021

First upset of the Sweet 16.

RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - Erika - 12-09-2021

Washington takes the first set over #2 Texas.

I’m impressed that Texas got two teams into the tourney.

Sorry to see no Pac-12 teams in the Elite 8.
Thought the Huskies had the upset after the first two sets.  What a comeback by the Longhorns.

Just watched the Nebraska/Texas game. Nebraska won 3-1 and really controlled the entire game.  Nebraska played more fundamentally sound throughout and Texas did not impress me. Lots of unforced errors, poor serve receive. Nebraska really improved throughout the year from early on when we played them and beat them.

I won't be surprised if Nebraska wins their 6th national championship.  And then, they become better next year with top MB recruit in 6'6 MENDELSON and another Class of 2022 Top 5 recruit.
