Also watching. IMO it seems like Iowa’s biggest problem is rebounding, followed by defense. Creighton is getting just about every offensive board, and most of the defensive boards as well; Iowa is also allowing a lot of backdoor cuts and open outside looks.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - martyup - 03-20-2022

I'm watching the rapport between the Iowa players on the court, on the bench, and the coach.  I see a lot of anger and stress.  I don't sense much love or joy there.  That is what I really like about our team.  They don't panic when things are going bad.  They rely on each other and support each other with a sense of love.  They are having fun.  This revelation on my part has put my mind at ease at the prospect our losing a game in this tourney.  I'm emotionally ready to deal with that possibility because a loss will not diminish their love for each other or my love and admiration for this team.

67 of the 68 teams in this tourney will end their season with a loss. While it would be great to win and repeat as National Champions, it will be extremely difficult to do so.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - TheWildJacko - 03-20-2022

Momentum swinging towards Iowa. Just took the lead and then grabbed a steal with a chance to extend. Defense and rebounding improving. 58-54 Iowa with 5:29 remaining.

Creighton hits a 3 to take a 1-point lead with 12.6 seconds left.

Clark misses the layup with 6 seconds left, Iowa fouls, but had a foul to give. Creighton inbounds with 4.7 left, and plays keep away to burn another second. Now shooting 2, hits 1 of 2. Iowa timeout to advance, 3.6 to go, Creighton up 2 with two fouls to give. Creighton may pull off the upset.

Iowa missed at the rim, got the rebound, missed again. Creighton wins. And my bracket is severely busted. Had Iowa making it to the title game.

Creighton somehow held Clark to 1 basket in the 2nd half.

Creighton held Clark to just one basket in the second half and knocked off the #2 seed Iowa in a packed Iowa house.  Just amazing.  Clark was held to a season low of 15 points.

A Creighton transfer from Iowa, Jensen, was the hero.

To win 6 in this tourney, you've gotta have luck . . . and love.  Iowa was missing both today.

On the Creighton possession before the deciding 3 pt basket and down by two, a Creighton player missed the bunniest of all bunnies and I thought it was curtains for them.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - martyup - 03-20-2022

Yeah, Creighton missed several good opportunities in the last few minutes.  Iowa just couldn't capitalize.  Jensen was clutch, though.

SC only scored 23 points in the first half of their game against Miami.  However, Miami only scored 10.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - Jskass - 03-20-2022

quick question for next year (though don't want to be premature): does anyone have a sense of whether the Pac-12 intends to continue to have the WBB conference tournament in Las Vegas beyond 2022? The current agreement is through 22 only (and was announced in Oct 2019).

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - M T - 03-20-2022

The officials let the Creighton - Iowa game descend into maul-ball.  I hope Stanford doesn't get those officials.  Maybe Stanford will do well under such a situation, but it ignores skill and benefits rough housing.
Did you see the dramatic flop by Clark with 7 seconds left in the game?  The officials (rightfully) weren't sold, but it was a home game.

As for FGCU - Maryland, the higher ranked team are the beefy, bigger players that are throwing the other team around.  The officials are now trying to keep it more contained.
However, the officials ignored the MD coach on the court and 8 other bench personnel standing when their opponent had the ball on offense in front of them.

At the half, So. Carolina 23, Miami 10.  0 FG by Miami in Q2.  Stanford threw down the gauntlet.  UConn and So. Carolina have responded.

One other discussion point -- the upsets and parity. I just listened to Adia Barnes comments about West Coast kids staying on the west coast rather than all going to UConn plus kids recruiting their friends to play together (which reminds me of Miles and Citron at Notre Dame). I also wonder if the fact that there were fewer OOC games played due to CoVid cancellations may have decreased the accuracy of some comparisons/assessments. Thoughts on these or other contributing factors? Of course, there's always TV and the Bueckers-Clark hype.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - martyup - 03-20-2022

South Carolina has scored only 31 points in 3 quarters of basketball against Miami.  Miami has scored 15.  Both teams struggling on offense.

I think all of those are factors.

I would add also that there is not a lot of experience playing in the NCAA tournament in front of raucous crowds.  It is a different experience than the last two years and some teams may react well and others poorly.

On the other hand, one undeniable advantage that we have is the recent experience of winning at the highest level in very close games.  We are unlikely to fold, give up, or become intimidated as we might had our team not had the experience of last year.  Let's hope we can put four good quarters together for 5 games in a row.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - martyup - 03-20-2022

Obviously masks are optional for coaches in the tourney because some are wearing them and some are not.  What I don't understand is why some coaches choose to wear the mask but constantly touch it, pull it down to yell, and take it off during huddles.  I guess it's just symbolic at this point because using it like that is not prophylactic.

South Carolina wins 49 - 33.  They shot only 24% for the game.  Despite getting her double-double, Boston was only 4-15 from the field and 1-5 from the FT line.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - 81alum - 03-20-2022

Maryland took care of FGCU fairly easily after a close first quarter, and it seems Texas is doing the same to Utah.  Rory Harmon scored 21 points against us as a freshman playing in her 2nd game, and she is doing quite well against Utah with her impossible-to-defend mid range pull up jumper.

RE: WBB NCAA tournament - martyup - 03-20-2022

Texas is shooting 74%/60%.  I doubt that will travel to Spokane.

The Texas coach is easy to dislike.

Oh my yes.  I hope we get the chance to dislike him in a few games.

I'm not sure I want to see our team play Texas again.  They are bullies and the refs let them get away with it today.  I hate watching them, especially that curmudgeon coach of theirs.  We don't match up well with them because of how much they press, and push, and slap.  And the way they shot the ball today, I don't think anyone could have beat them.

Baylor is in big trouble against South Dakota.  The #2 seeded Bears are down 28-42 to the #10 seeded Coyotes with 4 minutes to play in the 3rd.

I said that not because I want to play them, but because it would mean we had gotten past the next two games, neither of which will be easy.

9 point South Dakota lead with about 5 minutes left.

BC

Collen, Baylor coach, antics similar to Mulkey. Go South Dakota
