RE: FOOTBALL: AZST GAME THREAD - martyup - 10-22-2022

We had 28 first downs to ASU's 19.

How do you get 28 first downs and not score a TD?

I don't think we are going to beat ASU with field goals.

Think again.

Arm in a sling, reportedly.  We are going to be very short-handed at RB for the rest of the season.

Great tackle by Sinclair on that punt return maybe a game saver. Take a bow proud dad Andy

It was a nice tackle but the ASU returner reversed his field right into him.  But yeah, that was at least 8-10 yards of field position that would have given them a shot at a FG.

RE: FOOTBALL: ASU GAME THREAD - newguy - 10-22-2022

Now that was one exciting game.
I thought the injuries to Bonner and Filkins would kill us, but they didn't.
Ernest Cooper IV sure was fired up.
McKee played poorly, but he was fired up too.
Defense and special teams for the win.

Karty is a shoo-in for Pac 12 Player of the Week for the 3rd time in 4 weeks.

Agree!  But the injury to Bonner did hurt a bit.  A couple plays after he left the game, they immediately picked on Salim Turner-Muhammad for their long TD pass.  Then we saw Toomer at CB for most of the rest of the game, and I guess he did pretty well.

Cooper IV was a revelation!  A sack, 2.5 TFLs, 5 tackles - in relatively limited action, replacing Armitage who was also down.  Maybe Cooper and Bailey will terrorize opposing offenses for us for a few years to come.

Note that Fields was also out in the second half, replaced by #33 Gilman.

Don't know what we'll do without Filkins going forward.  With his arm in a sling, it does not seem likely that he'll be back for a while. We're down to two guys that have played at all - Barrow and walk-on Robinson, who was getting all the touches at the end.

He was also sacked four times and had a bunch of scrambled.  Total drop backs were well north of 60.

BC

It really was a heroic effort from McKee after Filkins went out. Being so one-dimensional (due to injury) didn't help the stat line, and got him sacked a lot, but he put us in position to win a game.

RE: FOOTBALL: ASU GAME THREAD - martyup - 10-22-2022

We've only allowed 14 points to our last 2 opponents.  Despite our poor tackling and coverage breakdowns, we have a scrappy defense.

RE: FOOTBALL: ASU GAME THREAD - old spanish trail - 10-22-2022

End the slo mesh!!! The only thing good about Filkins' arm in a sling is that it may force Shaw to put it to bed. Smith had the quickness to take off when keeping the ball, and Filkins arguably (I don't think so) has quick enuf feet to emerge from the mesh. Neither of the 3rd and 4th backs have the necessary quickness. McKee is a terrible fit for the slo mesh. He's has neither quick feet, nor fast get away. His one positive is that he can see over the various linemen. It's crazy unfair to make him play this nutty system.

Kudos to the defense. The frosh are actually beginning to look pretty good. I've wondered why Cooper didn't play before today. He was READY to play. Whole D, except Kelly on those last two passes, played great. brobdingnagian kudos to Karty, of course.

Question: Was Kennelly injured earlier in the season. I thought I saw a dnp while not on injured list. His hair was on fire. Good for him.

RE: FOOTBALL: ASU GAME THREAD - vataha - 10-22-2022

C’mon, our backfield is hurtin for certain, yes we have become one dimensional but that is not by design. To win despite short comings is optimum.
(Karty is the man!)

Right.....it didn't take them long to pick on STM.
As far as running back depth, i wonder if Arlen Harris is available?

I totally agree with your conclusion, "Randy". The win is optimal. But, do you think the slow mesh is a good fit for this team?

They will have to get a frosh or ??? ready.

RE: FOOTBALL: ASU GAME THREAD - martyup - 10-22-2022

I was surprised to see that Yurosek had 10 catches tonight.  He's a solid weapon, along with Higgens, Humphreys, and Tremayne.  It's crazy that we are not scoring TDs.

RE: FOOTBALL: ASU GAME THREAD - vataha - 10-22-2022

Who would have thought that these sure handed receivers would have dropped a lot of yards /points, that would have made it a different game. Take what you can get. This team has playmakers and many injuries.

* Yurosek was amazing.

John was correct, we won with FGs AND defense, not just FGs. :)

They certainly should be scoring more.  But they lack speed.
