Uconn had three top 10 wins in about the span of 10 days. We have zero top 10 wins. Their non conference is incredibly tough - way tougher than ours. Yes, the Big East is not the Pac12 but they don't voluntarily schedule cupcake games.

OSu had a 12 point lead with 4 minutes to go and ends up losing by 3 at Arizona tonight.

According to Massey, UConn’s projected SOS is 2. Stanford’s is 5, South Carolina’s is 7.

Tennessee was ranked 5th in the AP poll at the start of the season.

Utah is ranked 8th, but are behind Colorado ATM.

PAC-12 has the #1 projected SOS. SEC is a little weak this year with the 5th conference SOS, while the Big East is 6th.

A coach’s job is the play the schedule that prepares them to do the best in March.  UConn has to play a strong OOC schedule because of their conference. As someone who grew up in the Northeast, I’m glad to see the Big East conference get stronger.

His philosophy seems to be you earn your playing time in practice and if the player isn’t ready to play to his standards, putting them in will make the starters have to work harder.

This causes players who want to play that don’t meet his standards to transfer.

Would be interesting if the South Carolina game is cancelled. Some UConn fans have been saying Stanford and South Carolina played weaker OOC schedules than they should of.

This is so true.  UConn’s small roster is a direct result of his coaching philosophy.  Only the star players play.  The play 35 mins even in brobdingnagian blowouts.  They get to pad their stats for all American honors.  And the very highly ranked bench players don’t play.  Thus a lot of them transfer out.  Contrast that with how little Brink and Jones play especially in blowouts and how much time all 15 players get on the court.  It’s a different coaching philosophy but one of them is much much better at weathering injuries.  So it’s not just bad luck it is also a purposeful decision that the UConn coaching staff has made.  Because they could really used players like Saylor Poffenberger and Mir Mcclean who are all doing well on their new teams

Uconn wouldn't duck SCAROLINA,  no way. Lol

I do sympathize with all the Uconn injuries. It's unfortunate. BUT, we as a program have had many injuries over the years along with many other teams. They are getting way over the top coverage about it this year. Stop already ESPN. When Uconn won 4 titles in a row - they were healthy for 4 straight years. Injuries can happen to any program. It's also Geno's choice to have a roster of 9 or 10 kids so when they dip below a minimum threshold to play a game; it's partly their own fault for not having a bigger roster.

Way over the top coverage, indeed. Now at 3 of the 7 top stories on the ESPN page.

I can't imagine if this was Stanford, ND, or South Carolina, UConn wouldn't be screaming for them to forfeit the game.

We've seen teams forfeit. In the PAC-12, it can hurt them for their conference tournament seeding, but does it hurt them for NCAA tournament seeding?  If UConn forfeits a game to South Carolina, will it count as a loss to South Carolina in the NET rankings?  Will the NCAA seed them on the basis of played games, or take into account games they failed to play?  Since it is out-of-conference, it may be that a forfeit has no negative for UConn and no positive for South Carolina, making it a no contest.

Quote:If UConn or any Big East team can’t field enough players to play in a game on its originally intended date during the league season, the game will go down as a forfeit and a loss on that team’s conference record. A win will be assigned to the opponent.
-- CTInsider wrote in November 2021

So, why isn't this a forfeit rather than a postponement?  The rule changed a month later.

Quote:Moving forward, if a team can’t field at least seven scholarship players and one countable coach, the game will be canceled and the conference will attempt to reschedule it. If the game cannot be made up, it will be designated a no contest.
-- Hartford Courant

So, for Geno, it appears there will be no forfeit, only no contest, whether the missed game(s) are in or out of conference.

Does anyone know if UConn avoids its game with South Carolina (@UConn) or Tennessee (@Tenn), are there contractual commitments for money they have to shell out for the other team's loss of revenue?

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - chimera - 01-06-2023

So Utah, a team that has looked less than amazing once conference play started, loses at Colorado tonight.  I did not see all of the game, just some of the last quarter so can't really comment on if Utah played well by their standards.  They have been playing close games against teams that probably finish toward the bottom of the conference, so maybe this is not such a surprise.  UA almost lost to OSU, which would have been another surprise, although I don't think UA is really that great.  Cal almost beat them too last weekend.

Yukon should forfeit their game, not postpone it. What fault is it of their opponents that Yukon can't field a team?

Edwards and Patterson injured now

Last season UCLA had to forfeit a game at Oregon when the team got down to six healthy scholarship players.  Because the reduction to six available wasn't COVID related the Pac-12 conference declared the game a forfeit instead of a postponement.  Clearly the Big East has more lenient rules when it comes to postponing games due to depleted rosters.

I recall seeing a video interview between Coach Graves and his buddy Oregonian writer James Crepea last season where they belittled Cori Close for asking for a postponement.  Graves made a statement to the effect that if he could field a team he would play.  He has now experienced first hand what it is like to have only seven available bodies.  Wonder if he feels differently now if he got down to six players available.

that was a covid change in the rules, therefore presumably temporary. perhaps the big east hasn't gotten around to changing the rules back. but uconn is certainly playing loose with the intent as the no contest rather than forfeit was intended for covid absences.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - DaBears17 - 01-07-2023

Seems like the Big East hasn’t changed their Covid rules, nor decided it doesn’t apply to being short handed due to injuries, like the PAC-12 did for UCLA and Arizon State last year.

According to this article, the NCAA does not consider forfeits when determining bids and seeding for the tournament. Interesting article with Graves and Tara advocating for changes and consequences at the conference level for coaches trying to avoid games.

Not having to forfeit incentivizes a team with seven healthy scholarship players to decide they no longer have seven healthy players and must postpone, especially if it looks like they might have nine in a few weeks. And/or have an excuse to not have to play South Carolina in a few weeks.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - martyup - 01-08-2023

Lots of top 10 ranked teams are getting tested today.  SC in a dog fight with Miss St, Ohio St is tied with ILL at the end of the 3rd, and Miami is beating VA Tech.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - martyup - 01-08-2023

#9 VA Tech lost to Miami 77-66.

SC only scores 58 points, but holds on to beat Miss St.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - M T - 01-08-2023

So. Carolina had trouble with the matchup zone of Miss. State, but still won by 7.  Neither team seemed to have 3 point shooters to spread out the defense.  Shooting percentages by each team were pretty bad (38% vs 30%), reflecting the other team's defense. FT% was 58% vs 40%. Ouch. FTA were 24 to 5 (22 to 3 with 2 minutes left in the game)

I'm watching the replay of Utah@Colorado. Regarding a foul at Q1 1:48l. Missy is calling fouls this year on the offense when a player A passes or hands off to a player B cutting by her and player B's defender runs into the player A.  Player A doesn't change direction, stick a leg out, or even move much.  Player A, in my opinion, is the first to the spot.   (In this case, the defender stuck her hands up to wedge through the two offensive players, and caught player A under the chin.  But Missy called the foul on player A.)  I don't understand the change on these calls this year.. I didn't see any change in rules or points of emphasis.   I would agree with the call if player A rotates and backs up into the defender, but that's not what is happening.

PAC-12 networks is VERY FRUSTRATING. They show original programming maybe 10-15% of their broadcast day in season, and almost 0% during the summer. So what do they do with their rebroadcasts? Cut the game play and put in ads. A basketball game is 40 minutes. Their "replay" of the Utah@Colorado game uses 90 minutes of broadcast, but they dropped 6:30 (16%) of the game. That was the period in which Colorado caught up and passed Utah. I wonder what happened, but I'll never know.

Anyone know why a network like the PAC-12 with so much dead-time in their schedule cuts games for replays? Is it financial, where they have to pay someone more if they air the whole game?

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - WBB fan - 01-08-2023

Osborne is back for UCLA, playing in today's game against USC, just tipped off.  Looks like Missy is one of the officials (i.e., we won't see her at Cal today)

ND loses to NCarolina 60 to 50
ND 2 of 22 3ptrs

I don’t know, but that’s real dumb.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - M T - 01-08-2023

One of the calls by Missy Barlow today was at the end of a quarter when a player was running to half court and launched a 3pt attempt.   A defensive player was just beyond the half court line and had stopped before the shooter took her last step and jumped.  The shooter landed on the defensive player's back.

Missy called a foul on the defensive player, presumably a blocking foul.   The announcers slightly garbled the call but basically said it was that the defender was not in a legal guarding position.  (To be in a legal guarding position, "The guard's torso shall face the opponent.")

"Blocking is illegal personal contact that impedes the progress of an opponent"
"Charging is illegal personal contact by pushing or moving into an opponent’s torso"

I disagree with the call, if that were Missy's reason.  She was not guarding the player, so she didn't need to be in a legal guarding position.  If a player runs  down the court and runs over another player who is not guarding her and maybe didn't see her coming, it is charging.  To rule otherwise would cause chaos as offensive players could then run over defensive players who are not guarding them, causing fouls on the defensive players.

Sorry, Missy, I think the call was wrong.

charisma osborne was back from injury today. londynn jones played most of the game at the other guard position instead of kiki rice.
