I don’t know, is there? McKee kind of underperformed this year and QB recruiting has been rather underwhelming.  That could all be laid at Shaw’s doorstep, but it hardly qualifies as evidence that Pritchard “has done at least a pretty good job as QB coach.”

Tbf he has been involved in coaching 2 QBs who have NFL starts and another who is a mid round prospect.

People have suggested that we have had several quarterbacks who have underachieved based on their rankings coming out of high school.
So I guess you can make arguments either way.

Speaking of which - Daniels?  Patu?  Who is the leader  in in the clubhouse?

We'll see if it gets officially announced but tea leaves seem to point to Pritchard as QB coach. I don't know if other titles (offensive coordinator, associate head coach, assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator, etc.) would come with it.

Good call…

Not sure this is the best for Pritchard. He needs a resume that says something other than “Stanford” on it. At least he will be exposed to a completely different offensive system, but he will be teaching our QB’s the new offense as he js learning the system, which seems suboptimal.  On the plus side, he will give the team some continuity.

Two coaches left, presumably our DB coaches, plus, we have to figure out who works with special teams.

I have mixed feelings about this hire, with the needle swinging more to the negative side.  It's been stated many times we don't know how often Shaw over ruled TP, and we could not determine with certainty how good or bad he is.

Maybe TP is a diamond in the rough.  Hope this is the case.

We do know. It was all the time. TP's only "play calls" were our scripted first drives. Shaw had final say on every single play call after that.

I for one think we'll be shocked at how much better our QBs look in an offensive system that doesn't actively suck and doesn't take 3 years to "master."

(This is technically a demotion, by the way.)

It's not as if the backs, receivers, TEs and OLs covered themselves in glory. Lots of arguments to be made as to which coach/coordinator was most responsible and which should (not) be re-hired. Looks like TP fit the bill. He's ex-Stanford and a pretty good recruiter, if memory serves.

RE: Assistant Coaches - msqueri - 12-30-2022

I think those calling on Pritchard to get experience elsewhere misunderstand him/Stanford. He’s a Stanford lifer if he has anything to say about it. He’s Dave Tipton.

Every single QB coach and school in the nation has. The majority of 4* QBs bust. (5* mega-whale QBs usually live up to the billing, but that's about it and there are only a couple of those a year.)

I think Mills might have been his best coaching job.  But the fact that McKee is a mid-round prospect and was a high 4* QB out of high school, yet underperformed in our system argues against Pritchard as coach (or at least doesn’t argue for him).  The best case scenario is Sam’s, and that Pritchard’s QB’s will appear to be much better when not burdened by the system that actively sucks.

Still, QB recruiting has been poor since McKee was recruited 5! Years ago.  Yes, hard to disentangle from the general malaise affecting the program generally and offense specifically, but still, it doesn’t exactly speak to Pritchard as an excellent recruiter.

I like Pritchard a lot generally.  I actually think he might make a good head coach some day.  But because I am bullish about Pritchard, I don’t want him to be a Dave Tipton, forever stagnating as a niche position coach at the whims of whoever is running the program.  Remember, Tipton was eventually let go by Harbaugh.

McKee underperformed this year b/c the slo-mo-RPO was absolutely the wrong offense for him.  He probably did as well as he could with the tools he was given.  One could argue it was the only option given our relatively sieve-like OL.  What we saw was what we got -- a relatively inexperienced guy with a cannon arm who couldn't really run well and took a lot of hits due to a bad scheme, bad line and relatively poor pocket awareness.  And once the injuries piled up for WR and RB there really wasn't anything left in the larder. Having said that, he has a shot at the next level.

When Tavita wasn't let go immediately, I started to wonder. But I don't recall any announcements being made about current staff leaving, just new hires coming in. I'm skeptical but let's hope this doesn't turn out to be a case of someone's entire career being framed by one great game on the field.

the only "news" on departures I recall was when Morgan Turner went to Arkansas, but that was an Arkansas announcement he was coming not a Stanford announcement he was leaving, the former seems to be more common for assistants turnover after a head coaching change

So if I read correctly, Anderson was not retained as a coach but is still around. What's his role?

LDS recruiter?
Mascot?
Elder?

It would be poetic if Cal hired Pritchard as their next head coach.

I think I do understand that. However, much as some Stanford graduate programs do not accept their own undergraduates, even (especially?) Stanford Lifers have to polish their resume. Dave Tipton played six years in the NFL. That demonstrates he wasn't just a "Stanford Phenomenon". Tavita doesn't have that, or anything like it, and I think that all by itself makes it very difficult for most to "see" him as a head coach (other reasons non-withstanding). If you are a "lifer" assistant at Stanford, eventually some new HC coach will let you go. You need to be able to land on your feet and earn your way back, or become the HC so that can't happen.

Exactly. Tipton went away and proved himself in pros (playing and coaching) before coming back to Stanford. All it takes is one head coach who wants to go in a different direction and he is on the street. From a professional development standpoint I would think he would want to do something different for a period if nothing else to prove that Stanford is where he wants to be.

RE: Assistant Coaches - msqueri - 12-30-2022

Tipton was at Stanford continuously from 1989 to 2006 (17 years) and was probably even more pigeon-holed/limited from upward career mobility beyond Stanford than Pritchard is. But why leave Stanford if you have a good job and view yourself as a Stanford Man? Of course the ride can end, like it did when Harbaugh kicked Tipton to the curb. Eventually that will happen for Pritchard too. But why would he leave of his own volition before somebody makes him? You guys are talking about him like he's a college football coach hopping from school to school for an opportunity like the others in his profession, but he's been at Stanford continuously from 2006-2023 (17 years). Like Tipton I bet Pritchard will be on campus until somebody kicks him off. When that eventually happens maybe he'll look for a job at another major college football program but we don't know that. Maybe he'll go high school like Tipton, or lower level college, or something else. Having been a more senior assistant for Stanford than Tipton was Pritchard probably has more money too.

Anyway, just think you guys are projecting in thinking he should go elsewhere. He's a lifer and when somebody tells him his Stanford life is over he'll cross that bridge when he needs to, but I don't think it's realistic/understanding of his mentality to think he'll take a shortcut to that bridge. Why leave his bliss if he doesn't have to?

Bob Gregory would be an interesting addition. Cal DC during the glory years and part of the Chris Peterson coaching tree.

In a way, he is going somewhere else.  Offense will be completely different. That broadens his resume.

RE: Assistant Coaches - StanfordMatt - 12-30-2022

I said in a previous post that I thought Tavita had a decent chance to land a job as a QC in the NFL based on the volume of NFL coaches with Stanford connections. The issue is that those jobs are still a month away from being filled. I would venture to guess that Tavita himself would agree with those saying he needs to get experience elsewhere. Either that or he’s just gotten comfortable at Stanford.

Regardless of where his head is at, it’s undeniable that it would be best for him professionally to leave Stanford. The problem for him is that there’s probably no one at the college level who will hire him. He has almost no network at the college level. Aside from Lance Taylor, there’s almost no one at the college level who Tavita has worked with who would be in a position to hire him.

You describe what you think he will do, namely stay and accept whatever happens. You may very well be correct. However, he is 35 years old and being "kicked to the curb" may not be too attractive at that age. I don't claim to "understand his mentality". I don't know the man. My belief that he should go somewhere else and "polish his resume" is based on the obvious fact he may need to get a job elsewhere "soon" (almost needed to this year), and it is better to be proactive, and attempt to control your own destiny. He may be perfectly happy being a QB coach at Stanford forever. However, there are good reasons to believe that is not an option. Given that, my suggestion remains the same.
