Wilke would be a big "get," maybe a more than adequate replacement for Nivar. Hope her interest in Stanford indicates that she has been or is being told that she can get past admissions. But if it's not Stanford and is Utah, going there makes them every more powerful.

I love it! Interesting that Hannah Jump signs her name "Stanford Cardinal" on the final four product advertised below the Wooden Award photos.

From what I've seen of Betts (admittedly not that much) my impression is that she is a decent player. Worthy of a #1 recruit in the nation? Doubtful.
As far as waiting four years, did we have to wait four years to see that Paige Bueckers, Caitlin Clark, and our own Cameron Brink were great players?

A 6-7 post in HS is most likely going to have her way under the basket on both O and D.  Not so easy at the next level.  Better, bigger, quicker players and better defensive coaching schemes too.

And our posts were hampered all year playing 4 on 4, with Jump pinned in the corner and no other consistent outside threat to take the pressure of them.

Betts was running the court better by the end of the season, but unfortunately we won't reap any benefits from that.

Please help educate me?  How can Maty Wilke list Stanford as one of her 5 potential schools to transfer to when so many of you already told me the portal is not a realistic option because of Stanford's rigorous academic constraints.  Surely Wilke knows this.

If, on the other hand, the portal is a realistic option because for Stanford to acquire talent (and please explain why), I'd much rather we get Kayla Padilla, the grad student from Penn, who wants to come out West.  Much better all-around guard.

I have been making the assumption that we will not get anyone from the portal.  Where am I wrong?

And why are we not seeing these great photos of Cam (on this particular occasion), on the Stanford WBB website?  Mind-boggling.

Getting transfers in has been very difficult, but not impossible.  We got Jordan Hamilton a couple of years ago.  Nobody ever said we could not get anyone at all from the portal.  The issue is getting enough top players to balance out if top players like Betts and Nivar leave.  That will be incredibly difficult unless Stanford makes changes.  This is not like almost all other top basketball programs who can just take whoever they want as long as they transfer wants in.  Stanford has to get them admitted, which has been difficult.  Grad transfers have to get admitted to specific grad programs, some of which have very low acceptance rates.  If you follow Stanford sports, surely you know all this, or should.

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - Softball Fan - 04-12-2023

I must be missing something which is quite possible.  The deadline for undergrad transfer applications was March 15.  Unless someone has found a cure for cancer I don't see how they get admitted now for fall 2023 matriculation.  Tell me why I am wrong.

https://admission.stanford.edu/apply/transfer/index.html

FWIW while I'm a Stanford sports fan, I don't think Stanford should admit someone just because a person can bounce a basketball and the coach thinks that person will help the team. The student/athlete should be admitted partly for their athletic accomplishments but more so because they can benefit academically from a Stanford education.

One last thought. A student who graduates with a four year degree and applies to another school for a masters is to me not a "transfer student". I think a grad student should be a different category than an undergrad transfer.

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - BobK - 04-12-2023

Stanford has 4 football transfers
Track has 4.
Stop and pop where are you getting your fake news
Yes it’s very hard to get transfers but not impossible.
Padilla is from the LA area. Thus her comment about coming west. Or back home

Respectfully, why are you calling it fake news when the information comes from this message board? In fact, your comment just confirmed my suspicions about the portal.  Hard, but not impossible.  We agree.  Thank you Bob K.

My question about Wilke remains.  Why would she list Stanford among her top 5 when she has to know that Stanford women's basketball rarely uses the portal?

You are misunderstanding why Stanford has not used the portal and may not be able to use it much now.  Try as they might, they still have to get the transfer admitted, which has been very difficult, but which maybe is getting a bit easier, since FB got a couple in recently and WBB got Hamilton a couple of years ago.  This is not a question of want to use the portal or not, it is a question of who in the portal has the grades and whatever else Stanford wants from transfers.  Maybe Wilke is one of the few who can get in as a transfer.  I assume that is a possibility if she is considering Stanford.  This is not complicated.  It is basically the same as recruiting out of HS.  Who can get in?  That is the question.

Wisconsin's last game was Mar 2, she announced entering the portal on April 3 so she might (or might not) have applied to transfer with the regular deadline.

and at least way back in time when I transferred in admit notifications were rolling, I was notified I was admitted in mid-August, not sure if that's currently the case or not.

Several of the football transfers appear to have gotten expedited decisions on their admission given the timing of entering the portal and announcements they were admitted although the transfer site does say

Quote:Stanford reserves the right to evaluate an application and render a final decision even if all pieces of the application have not been received.

so maybe you just need to have started an application by Mar 15 and longer lead time items (like the two required recommendations) can follow

RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal - BobK - 04-12-2023

Athletes are admitted thru out the year
Now some like Gates WVB and I thought Hamliton WBB were grad transfer first admitted then asked to join the team.
If Wilke has Stanford top 5 then our coaches are are least talking to her.
Wilke will be a third year soph. Averaged about 12 points this past season. All Big 12 academic

I have followed (only) Stanford WBB since 2017; not very long compared to many of you.  I have followed WBB (nationally) for almost 60 years starting with Nashville Business College's AAU women's team.

Women's college basketball transfer rankings 2023-24: Top 35 players in the portal (espn.com)

Oregon loses both starting guards and post.  Duke loses both starting guards. Louisville loses both Van Lith and Verhurst both starting guards.

This seems to prove the old adage that "the grass is always greener on the other side of each of 361 fences."

By the way, I looked in on some of the Oregon message boards.  Their fans are quite unhappy too.  Speculation that the vast majority of players entering the transfer portal have deals lined up before they do.  Then there was this tweet from Rogers:

Quote:college coaches capitalize on better job opportunities and leave a program with no hesitation if the price is right. BUT when an athlete does, it’s a problem. it’s cool when they do it, it’s a problem when we do it…. you know the rest.

I am not happy about many coaches, either.  But for Rogers, apparently, "the price was right."  She would be entirely justified to point out the hypocrisy if students were professional athletes just as coaches are professional coaches.  But we now live in a weird world where the professional/amateur distinction is blurred to the point of vanishing altogether.

I noted this observation in the article.

Quote:Ole Miss reached the Sweet 16 this year with six transfers on the roster. Coach Yolette McPhee-McCuin has already added three starters from other programs for next year's team.

Duke has now lost a third starter, who is eligible for a 5th 'COVID' year.

Just wonder how many college coaches would prefer to go back to the previous transfer rule where a player has to sit out for a year (with exceptions) unless they are a grad transfer?

Most coaches who love the X's and O's of the game don't really like recruiting, but see it as a necessary evil.  And now they need to not just recruit a few new players for their team every year, they have to recruit potentially the entire team every year.  Those players that do NOT enter the transfer portal are probably approached and "recruited" to stay put.  It must be an absolute nightmare.  Rather than being a basketball coach, you have become a personnel manager.

Furthermore, it has to undermine whatever sense of discipline a coach tries to instill. The good side of this is that coaches that are abusive will rapidly find their team vanishing. But what about a coach that is professional but critical? Does coaching now go the way of grade inflation?

I remember Tara saying at a press conference this year something like "You know, coaching is not like giving out candy. You have to make corrections." She is normally so taciturn that the remark stuck with me. In retrospect, I wonder if more was on her mind.
