The Cori Closes resume
13 seasons in the PAC12
Conference championships 0
Conference tournament championships 0
Best conference finish 2nd (twice)

A roster this year with the #1 and #2 recruits in 2022 plus enough surrounding talent to compete with any team in the country. They bow out in the Sweet 16. Her accomplishments don’t impress me with the resources and roster she has.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - BobK - 03-31-2024

lol on don’t impress me. Agree. She waves her arms on the sideline and to her that’s coaching

Speaking of coaching late in the USC Baylor game it was not Gottlieb talking to the team it was Beth Burns Twice

Mudhead - Mudhead - 03-31-2024

Not very popular on this site, I know, but it’s time to recognize Mulkey for one of the better coaches in the history of the womens game.  She is a superb recruiter, her teams play really hard for her and her game management is excellent. I thought it really showed in this game where UCLA had equal or better talent and a mismatch that LSU players couldn’t effectively stop.

Say what you will about her dressing style, how combative her players are or whether you like her social jusdgements but recognize her as a winner and great coach.

While I’m at it, I confess that Betts is a whole lot better than I thought. I saw none of the slow , tentative big I saw at Stanford.  Her loss is a vey, very big one to the program. It may have neen unavoidable. There probably is not any way to stockpile great players anymore . I thought  Tara , Brink and Kiki did a great job of managing the problems associated with having TWO all American level post players on the sa e team. But three?  I probably would have picked the two we have if I had to cut down from three and with the transfer portal, that’s what you wind up doing.

Did you see what she did after the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game?  Bad character was on full display.

Well, they were playing the defending national champions and the #1 recruit missed part of the year due to injuries. She can recruit though. She has an excellent class coming in this year and Betts' sister (considered one of the top players in the '25 class) signed up.
The team that has the dynamite recruiting class is U$C. Team those players with Watkins and they look unstoppable in the future. I'm glad we don't have to play them.

Unfortunately, I fear we are going to struggle in the ACC next year.  On paper out team seems worse, not better and no apparent prospects for fixing our inability to guard quick opposing players of which there will be more than one in the ACC.  Brink's departure will be a brobdingnagian loss, just watch the last part of the NCS game without Brink.  I think opposing teams will do what NCS did and simply take the ball at Kiki and make her defend, probably foul or give up a layin.  Jump is gone, it could be ugly.  Hopefully someone already on the roster has a Kiki like improvement between now and then, preferably more than one.  Some of the young players are really going to have to step up.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - BosCard - 03-31-2024

I’m not sure what the solution on the offensive end is because we only have one proven scorer returning.  However I do think we can get better defensively by giving Clardy, Ogden and Agara more playing time.   They are all quick and long defenders who can at least pressure taller guards shooting jump shots or layups off the dribble.  Lepolo and Jump really struggled with that this year and opponents constantly tried to isolate their guards to drive on Lepolo or Jump.

I assume you are tongue in cheek. But no, I had t seen it. Watching it raises my opinion of Mulkey. It takes a pretty big person to poke fun at herself. If not tongue in cheek , we all need to get out more!

I think, while we all can have excuses, this was a exceptionally tough Sweet 16 match-up for any 2 seed. I think LSU, yes, has that moxy, that edge and star power at the end of the day that perhaps UCLA does not. And yes, that is also reflective of Kim Mulkey. Like her or hate her, you can't deny that she's is a fierce competitor and not afraid to do whatever it takes to win and that will have me rooting for her team against Iowa.

Very funny, and not a bad arm!

re: the individual talents of next year's squad. Tara is more of a system coach. Both the offensive and defensive routines are built around that specific team's talents. It puts many of the players into restricted roles. This is way different than the more athletic, attacking teams like LSU. For all we know, if Tara did land Juju, Kiki, Hidalgo, etc., that's how Tara would play too. This season's box scores were very consistent - you often didn't see the role players having "big games" because they were specifically instructed to feed the ball to other players. But it doesn't mean the players are without talent or incapable of playing differently. This year, Ogden, a big time scorer in high school, didn't get to play big minutes or shoot tons of shots because the scoring was supposed to come from Kiki, Cam, and Hannah. Same could be true for Brooke, Nunu, Bosgana, Harriel...

She was just poking fun at her self.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - JohnR34231 - 03-31-2024

I remember Hailey Van Lith and Caitlin got into a little trash talking in their playoff game last year. Throw Angel Reese into the mix and we may have some real fireworks.
Stay tuned.

Immense respect for Rueck’s restraint. These refs make the PAC-12 contingent look like perfection…

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - Jskass - 03-31-2024

Glad you said that about the refs, as that is how it appears in person (from several rows behind the various Beers). Lots of over the tops and fouls not being called on South Carolina. Refs so bad I miss Missy!

Yeah, the Beavs have had some real questionable fouls called on their key players.
Camera panned once to Reagan Beers' dad who was protesting one of them called against his daughter.
They are still hanging in there though, Only down 37-33 at halftime.

A big contrast in style/behavior between the ucla - lsu head coaches and the Oregon State and South Carolina Head Coaches.

True that, although, if I were Dawn Staley, I’d be pretty chill about the reffing as well…:-)

Yeah when you are undefeated, it would seem pretty churlish to get too upset about the officiating.
