1) An all-too-exciting game to watch. If you recall, I said I was not so worried about stopping Crooks, I was worried about Iowa State's perimeter shooting. Well, I was right to be confident about defending Crooks, and right to be worried about the perimeter.
1a) Against Maryland Crooks was 18/20. Against Stanford she was 3/21. I'd say we solved that problem.
1b) Iowa State has a LOT of excellent three point shooters. But tonight it was Brown at 4/5 and of course a career best 36 points for senior Emily Ryan in the last game of her career. Ryan proved to be much more than a three point shooter, though, and she nearly beat us by herself. I think putting Agara on her was a good adjustment, although it only slowed and did not stop the bleeding.
2) A somewhat sad way for Brink to finish her last game at Maples. Several of us wondered whether she was ill again. Even before Crooks bulldozed her she seemed to have low energy. But by now other teams realize that if they push her and beat her up early in the game, it throws off her rhythm and gets in her head. She gets so emotionally distraught by the bad calls--but she would play better if she would just develop instant amnesia. On the other hand, she probably would have fouled out in the first half if the refs called the game tightly. Once she realized how badly she was being hacked, she responded in kind and got away with a lot of it. Hopefully she has a few brilliant games for Stanford in her future. But whether she does or doesn't, I have been so very grateful to have watched her develop over the last four years.
3) Jump came over to the sideline for the radio interview with Jeanette and she (Jump) was in tears. She recovered quickly but was clearly very emotional about playing her last game in Maples. As our second leading scorer and only other double digit scorer besides Iriafen, I think she went out of Maples on a good note. She played all 45 minutes. She and Brink are our only links to the national championship now. She has given us so much pleasure. After the interview, on her way to the locker room, the diminished crowd roared its approval, and she waved, smiling now. I remember the same kind of wave and smile after Chiney's last game. Bittersweet.
4) For most of the game, I wondered if Demetre was even going to take a shot. I'm not sure she did until she made those two critical treys. She does seem to perform better under pressure. I can think of several other close games when she sank treys at critical junctures. That is a rare quality that does not show up on the stat sheets--critical baskets when they count the most. I just wish she would be making threes like that all game long so as to avoid the "critical juncture" altogether.
5) I thought Agara was clutch at both ends, and I can imagine her getting a lot more time both going forward and especially next year.
6) Lepolo has, I am sure, been hobbled by her knee, but she fought hard. In the end, she was 2/5 from three point range, although the 3 misses looked ugly. But did anyone notice she had 7 assists to 1 turnover? Whatever we say about other aspects of her game, she certainly delivers on the passes.
7) And last but certainly not least. Iriafen with a career night just moved into a tie for 6th place all-time at Stanford with her 41 points, edging ahead of Kate Starbird's 40 point performance against USC and tying Candice Wiggin's 41 points against Maryland. Jayne, Candice, Nneka, Kate, and Jeane Ruark Hoff (pre-Tara) have the top 5 performances. I sure am glad we get Kiki back next year!

As noted in so many posts above, Kiki had a monster game -- 41 pts, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, playing 41 of 45 minutes. After all the press enthusiasm on Friday night/Saturday over Crooks' 40 points vs Maryland, I wonder what we're going to read about Kiki tomorrow. It better be at least equal to what was written about Crooks. This is Kiki's second brobdingnagian game this year -- the other, her 36 points vs OSU for Tara's record-breaking win.
Now onward, to Portland!
Marisa Ingemi's SF Chron article about the game -- interesting comment about Cam contributing from the bench after she fouled out, urging on and supporting Kiki -- and the players saying that they were playing for Cam, that she not end her Stanford career with a loss this night.

Iriafen will definitely get some press, but I don't think nearly the same amount.
Now onward, to Portland!
Also props to Agara. She was key in slowing down Ryan. Without Agara on her, she could have easily joined Iriafen in the 40-point club tonight.... or led them to victory in regulation. I thought that was a key adjustment by VanDerveer.

Was frustrated by our rebounding but our highly effective defense of fronting Crooks put us at a disadvantage for rebounding because we were already behind her and were fairly easily boxed out for rebounds. Like the coaches, I'll take that tradeoff. I wish our guards were more aggressive in hunting rebounds on some of the longer bounces. However, Iowa State's 12/20 shooting from 3 didn't offer as many long rebounds as one would expect.
Relieved to have survived a sub-par game by Brink and atrocious officiating. Kiki put the team on her back and refused to let us lose. Love that Demetre came through with some clutch shots to keep Iowa State from grabbing the momentum to close the game and in OT. Survive and advance.
Someone mentioned the inbounding play by Tara at the end of regulation. Not sure if that was sarcasm but I don't recall her calling that play where all 4 players to receive the ball are lined up along the sideline. It was new and created an easy inbound at the end of the game. We got a decent shot by Kiki that didn't drop but it was a great inbound and play diagram that gave us a chance to win. Kudos to the coaches.

Damn Sling again! I forgot to schedule a recording of the game. At 7:02 (at Maples), I found the game on Sling's schedule and said to record it. Instead, it recorded a blank 2 hours of the Baylor game and a half hour (minus 10 minutes that the prior game ran over) of the Stanford game. Arrggh!
Then Sling shows up with a new gimmick that allows you to watch(record?) a game up to 72 hours after it airs. A saving grace? No...it currently shows no games to watch/record.
ESPNU is showing a replay at 7am of the Baylor game, followed by a 9AM unspecified round 2 game. It seems obvious it would be the late(Eastern) night, OT game, right? I hope so. I've set it to record.
I am also frustrated that the NCAA wants a monopoly on the stats of the games. StatBroadcast, which has been giving stats all along, is apparently barred from letting the public see their stats for the tournament games. It has a number of stats I'd like to see.

Stanford had 16 bench points; ISU had 7.
Lepolo's 2/5 from 3 was a higher percentage than Jump's 3/8. (Demetre was 2/3).

Long time lurker, first time poster. I felt the need to finally weigh in on a thread after an exhilarating but sleepless night for this East Coast alum.
All kudos to Kiki who played the game of her life, though we seem to keep getting a new one of those from her every month. Here's hoping she can have another in April. I thought her energy on the defensive end was the best I've seen it. She was as determined as Cam to shut down Crooks on that end of the floor and it did nothing to diminish her incredible offensive output. I have to think her 3 blocks were a career high and it felt like she had more.
Hannah was among the unsung heroes of the night. We (I'll include myself here) often complain about not having a 3rd consistent force on this team, but she was steady as it goes last night even as they picked on her for some post-ups at the end of the game. For as much as Cam was on an emotional roller coaster in this one, Hannah seemed to alternate between steely and composed and totally exuberant, which I think is a good leadership vibe for this squad.
I think Tara is often slower to react to mismatches in the game than us fans would like, but last night I thought she at least tried a lot of stuff to solve the Emily Ryan-led 3-point shooting onslaught from ISU. Talana getting consistently torched on those unders in the late first quarter eventually led to Harriel coming in and fighting through the screens better. That second quarter was our best defensive quarter and it came with Cam on the bench for a ton of it, so I was surprised that Harriel didn't get more run in the second half. I'm among those who wish we turned over the keys to Harriel mid-season and let Talana nurse her knee back to health. Nunu did bring some needed physicality to guarding Ryan in the last 2 quarters + OT, and she gave us more than we could have asked for given how her playing time has been yanked around, but ultimately Ryan kept having her way no matter who we put on her.
Brooke is a classic "no, no, yes!!" shooter and I was happy to be wrong each time those shots went in. She's hit a bunch of big ones this year, as others have noted, and it's nice to see her contribute in such a big way.
Lastly, I'll say it feels weird to write such a long post while mentioning Cam only in passing. I didn't think this team had it in them to win a game like this with a sub-par game from our star, but they did it and they deserved it. This will go down as one of the best games of the Cam-Stanford era, and I'm glad she and Hannah were able to walk off the Maples floor one last time to such a great ovation. Feels right as the Pac-12 era comes to a close.
On to the Sweet 16!

ISU Athletics story on game
This story of course focused on the Iowa State players but was very fairly written. Their press conference quotes were also very fair. I have nothing but respect for that Iowa State team and coaches -- they gave us everything we could handle and then some, especially Emily Ryan. We had to hit big shots because they hit big shots. It was really a great game and both teams fought so hard, you hate to see a loser.
If anything, I felt the refereeing was suspect, but I am of course biased here too. Crooks is a difficult player to referee because she uses her size to her advantage, reminds me of how Shaq would turn and lead with the shoulder and at times elbow. But Cam is also hard to referee the way she reaches over (and in) with her length, not always truly straight up, so I can see why other teams feel she is fouling as well. But you have all the physicality with Crooks and Cam/Iriafen in the post, and then you have two of the most ridiculous touch fouls for Demetre's first 2 fouls?
One play I thought was very odd was when the Iowa State player hit her chin on the floor. I was frustrated with our team for not taking advantage of a 5-on-4 opportunity and continuing to push to score. Lepolo threw it ahead to Iriafen but her pass was into traffic, so she had to throw it back out. Both Demetre and Lepolo barely got to halfcourt for some reason, and then Lepolo probably didn't even realize the player was down and just stood there for 3 seconds to reset the offense, giving the refs the opportunity to stop the play just as we were starting the offense again. I don't know what the protocol is for stopping play for player safety. The Iowa State player was not in harms way on the complete other side of the court, so it still seemed odd that they stopped the game like that.

1) Iriafen had the most points by a Stanford player since Nneka in 2011. She surpassed anything Chiney could do even when it was "Chiney and the Chinettes."
2) Iriafeni said she has been working on that mid range jump shot since last summer, when it became clear that other teams were taking charges to prevent her from driving. She noted that maybe she loves the mid range shot too much now--I take it the coaches would like to see her drive even more.
3) Jump: "As much as I love Maples, I didn't want my season to end here tonight. It was emotional for me, to be here and to play in front of this crowd one more time, they've been incredible, and tonight they were super loud, and I think that was very helpful for us, especially down the stretch."
4) Kiki: "It was VERY physical, but they had great sportsmanship, and that made it fun. Kudos to them."
5) Tara: "They shot 64% from three and made 12. You are not going to win too many games if you give that up. We did get confused on some screens."
6) Tara: "Talana has been struggling with her knee."
7) Tara: "We were up against a team that was hotter than snot out there, there were times when we were 'right there' and they still made shots."
8) Tara noted that our rebounding goes down when Cam is not in and Kiki is shooting. My interpretation: neither of our two bigs are around the boards for O-boards under those circumstances.
9) Tara noted that we did not double Crooks since we had to stay out on the three point shooters, but credited Brink and Iriafen for executing the scouting report on Crooks.
