I think anyone who has followed volleyball and Stanford now know who BaseballJunkie is. Congrats on Tim's great career on the Farm. And i hope your new venture works out - the community is not the same with your voice covering all the players and teams.
As for when a recruit should announce, it really depends on the recruit and his/her comfortableness with ambiguity. Because the decision ultimately lies with the admissions office, it is out of your hands, no matter how stellar your academics are. I remember when Cynthia Barboza committed super early as a junior (well early for early 2000s). When I asked Corlett about it, she said it was a no-brainer that Barboza was going to be admitted because of her grades. I do remember a soccer player who had committed to Stanford and had written a blog about it... and then it turns out she got rejected and ended up going to another local school. Those type of scenarios would scare me about committing early... but again, it all depends on the person, their grades, and how they deal with the unknown.

Does anyone know if Hentz was invited to try out for the Olympic team? I'm watching the match against China from yesterday and I am not impressed by Wong Orantes.
What other liberos were in training camp that were left off the roster? The only person who comes to mind is PSU grad Meghan Courtney, but I'm not sure if she is even on the Senior team any more.

Both Hentz and Courtney were on the final training roster of 23 players. Hentz got cut before the VNL tournament in Italy in May. Courtney made it to VNL but didn't make the final 12 player roster. Apparently Karch thought Wong-Orantes was the best choice for libero. If USA wins gold you have to defer to Karch for making the correct roster choices. If USA doesn't win gold there will be plenty of criticism for his libero and setter choices.
Courtney and Stanford's Plummer are both considered "alternates" so if Covid hit the team in Tokyo they would be eligible to fly there and be on the team but that seems unlikely at this point.

I watched Foluke-led USA sweep China in a tightly contested match. The head coach of China is Lang Ping. Back in the day she was considered by many to be the most popular athlete in China and was known as the Iron Hammer.
Her daughter is Lydia Bai who played for Stanford. One time I was at a club tournament watching a team with Bai and Haley Spelman. By happenstance Lang Ping sat down next to me and started shouting out instructions to Lydia in Chinese. I didn't understand any of it. I could tell from Lydia's demeanor, her attitude was "I know what I'm doing; I don't need any instruction from you".
Bai was not as good a baller as her mother and never played VB professionally. She currently is an executive at a South Bay company dealing with Machine Learning.

When is the first official day of practice? I'm guessing next Sunday August 8.
Will there be an intra-squad scrimmage open to the public? My oldest son lives in Palo Alto. I want to visit him this month and am thinking of scheduling it around an open team scrimmage.
This team is a total unknown. The only player with any real experience who might be a starter is Campbell and she has been out for a year with a knee injury.

Tami Alade wins post-graduate scholarship.

She [Tami Alade] has been working as a health associate alongside a pediatrician at a school for early education in East Palo Alto.
She worked harder than anyone on the team to improve her game knowing all along she had no plans to play volleyball after college.
Tami played on the volleyball team at a private high school in a small Canadian town. Some of the players served underhand which means there was little more than a basic skill level with no real coaching. To end up being a key factor in winning the 2018 DI national championship is almost beyond belief. Also, hats off to Dunning for recruiting an athlete that no other US college looked at.

Maggie Mendelson makes the U18 final 12 player roster for USA volleyball. The team will start training September 16 in Anaheim and depart on Sept 20 for the U18 world championship.
Mendelson is the only athlete to make both national youth teams in volleyball and basketball in the same year.

Does a virus take time off when the host is getting nourishment?
I think at this point those planning to go to a Stanford event in any venue should plan on wearing a mask while in the stands. Hopefully the county will permit that type of mitigation effort rather than go directly to reducing capacities or eliminating fans in the stands entirely.

Given my seat is right behind the first Stanford bench I’ll be wearing a mask
