Lack of transparency just leads to more speciation. I understand player privacy but lots of teams disclose player injuries and timeline or updates. It’s not forbidden It seems so stupid no one wants to comment on Lepolo. I assume we won’t see her again the rest of the year as the article kind of alludes to.

Very interesting. I would have thought our mental health support was second to none and I always sensed that team mates supported one another to a very high degree. Hats off to coach Close and to UCLA for giving Betts what she needed.

In an amoral world, Stanford would already be putting together a package to offer her to play for the Cardinal next season. Of course, that is not how Stanford operates. But you better believe that other schools are planning to make a big pitch to entice her to leave Vandy next season.

We were on her final list and we were holding a slot for her even past the early signing period when most everyone else signed. But she went with Vandy.

Good article. I like Betts and still enjoy watching her play. I thought all along she would eventually grow into her body and become a star. It's happening.

Stanford has in fact been challenged to improve its mental health support for athletes long before the Betts situation, and for WBB in particular, ever since Mikaela Brewer highlighted this issue in the wake of the COVID natty year, and again after the sad Katie Meyer event. Brewer's point about athletic identity foreclosure particularly resonated with me. My daughter became one of the top gymnasts for her age in the nation when she was still per-adolescent. She was spending 23 hours in the gym as a 12 year old. Her closest friends and her entire social life revolved around her teammates. Then she ruptured her Achilles and her career was abruptly over. She needed to construct a whole new sense of self-worth, a whole new circle of friends, a whole new outlook on life. It was an excruciatingly painful transition, not helped by the widespread publicity about Palo Alto's suicide cluster. It all turned out well in the end--after about 3 years of misery--and not before I saw first hand the kinds of mental health issues that elite athletes are sometimes forced to cope with.
Perhaps I should add that these kinds of issues are bound to be more serious and less well treated when athletes transfer repeatedly. How can they develop a support network over and over and over again?

Yeah, glad Betts has overcome her mental health problems and is living up to her HS ranking.
Just wish it had been accomplished at Stanford though. She specifically came out and said Stanford wasn't giving her enough support.

Always a good day when Uconn loses. I think SC will blow them out at home in a few weeks also.
Tennessee went out and found a great coach instead of just hiring a former Lady Vol player from the Pat Summit days. Sometimes a different coaching perspective and philosophy is needed. I worry about the same thing happening at Stanford that happened with Holly Warlick.

Well, Tennessee went through Warlick and then Kellie Harper (former player) before finding Caldwell and that took them more than a dozen years. Hopefully it won't take us that long to get back to the top.
