She does, though the opposing teams in this older vid were overmatched, the first couple, pretty badly at that.  Besides overall ball handling and open court awareness, she runs well and seems to have a good feel for the game - I'll also be interested to see how she progresses.

This is SUCH GOOD NEWS!

This should really help recruiting.  Awesome news!

I don't understand how this will really help recruiting any more than some other coach.

I was thinking the same. No disrespect to her great career but she last played here 8 years ago which is like the Pre-Cambrian to most young players today + she's hired as an intern which I think means recruiting "duties" would be limited to stuff like reviewing film and helping with on-sites.

I think it's great!! She brings youth, enthusiasm, amazing tactical knowledge according to pro coaches, and very recent wnba experience.

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - stopandpop - 10-21-2025

We are 8 days from our exhibition game against Cal. State L.A. and a few thoughts have crossed my mind.  1) I'm pretty confident that our three touted freshmen (Hailee, Lara and Alex) will get reasonably good playing time, but (being an exhibition), might any of them start?  With Lepolo's health & playing status questionable, I'm guessing Hailee gets the starting nod and Lara is first off the bench.

2) A bigger question for me is - with more talent, size and depth than last season at hand, does Kate shake up things a bit and adjust the offense that better takes advantage of how this year's team can attack and create problems for our opponents, or will we see the same offense that so many ACC teams defended so well?

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - Spiny_Norman - 10-21-2025

Lepolo's health is questionable??? I had not heard anything yet about this. Is she still experiencing knee irritation?

Kate and Tara before her have favored experienced players over rookies in terms of starting roles and minutes played. I think there is a trust factor with juniors and seniors, especially on the defensive end. It can take quite a while for frosh to adjust to defending and communicating with teammates off ball screens and playing one-on-one defense against players with elite skills. Frosh regularly get exposed on the defensive end.

The problem for Kate is that she does not have enough juniors and seniors to rely on, particularly if Lepolo is out. I can see a starting 5 of Agara, Stevenson, Ogden, Ijiwoye and Clardy. But after that, Stanford has 5 frosh, 2 sophomores (Umeh and Peterson) who barely played last year, and several end of bench players (Papadakis and Green). Kate is going to be forced to rely on young, unproven (but, we believe, gifted) players. I think she and the other coaches have to change their coaching style to adapt to the roster she has, not the one that she might be comfortable with.

I remain an optimistic fan of Stanford WBB. But my head foresees another middle of the conference, near .500 finish.

I don’t believe Lepolo is at all questionable Hey go to the reception tonight and get first hand info

Alas I am now 400 miles away. Wish they had hosted an open scrimmage when so many of us were on campus last weekend.

I’m 120 or so miles away. But I meant stop and pop should go

You will indeed see another 'middle of the conference' record because the starting lineup you suggested was largely responsible for last season's performance.  Having said that, you may be right; that Kate prefers experience, but that experience (with the exception of Nunu and Chloe), will not move the team in the right direction and fans will be in for another long season.  Kate's goal: "We want to compete for national championships" doesn't happen without the super-talented freshmen.

100% agree here. Seniority shouldn't be the barrier to improvement; we had a mediocre team last year and the talent coming in this year can take us back to where we used to be, if we are willing to use it

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - CompSci87 - 10-21-2025

Great reception tonight. I was standing at a table by myself and was surprised to have 4 players join me! They were super friendly -- Carly Amborn, Harper Peterson, Lauren Green, and Nora Ezike.

A couple of positive player health tidbits. Harper said she had surgery on her ankle/foot issue 16 weeks ago and is full go to practice now. Kate said loudly that Talana Lepolo is BACK, healthy and very happy to be participating and providing leadership.

The team will be flying charter to away games this year in larger planes that can go coast to coast without refueling. Last year they chartered, but in 30-seat planes that had to stop once to refuel when flying east and twice when flying west, making for some very time consuming and tiring trips

tara would typically start the older players, then sub in the talented freshman - often fairly quickly. candice wiggins is one of the few freshmen i remember starting from day 1. jamila wideman started at point her freshman year, but i don't recall if she started the first game.

It was a long time ago, but Nicole Powell also started from pretty much day 1, if I remember correctly. Kate Starbird as well.

Pretty sure that Wideman started right from the beginning. Other frosh who started immediately or very early in frosh season -- In recent times, Lili Thompson, Talana Lepolo. In the more distant past, Rachel Hemmer, Ros Gold-Onwude, Nicole Powell, Kayla Pederson (Tara so of her, she never was a freshman), Haley Jones after she got healthy. Nneka didn't start until late in her Freshman year, but Chiney was starting before the conference season began. I think Kate Starbird also was starting from the beginning.

RE: WBB 2025-2026 season - PVTree - 10-22-2025

Haley Jones did not start from day 1?

I would have thought she did.
