Civil War Pop Music: Divided & United
On a new CD, contemporary artists revive the era's songs
By STEVE DOUGHERTY

Quote:A 32-song double CD collection of rootsy and acoustic, stripped-down and emotion-packed renderings of tunes of the day, the album features a stellar lineup of old-guard Nashville stalwarts like Ms. Parton and Loretta Lynn ("Take Your Gun and Go, John") and clangorous newcomers.
The album mixes new takes on old tunes like "Dixie" (by Karen Elson and the Secret Sisters) and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (Angel Snow) with a raucous partisan Yankee stomp like Shovels & Rope's "The Fall of Charleston" and the rebel reel "Secesh" (The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band)songs that have been in mothballs since Appomattox.

I updated the Cardboard playlist:

To say it is an "eclectic mix" is an understatement. 89 tracks that will keep you going for almost 6 hours.

Grammy reactions -

1. If I performed like Katy Perry. I'd set myself on fire too.
2. The 2013 songs that people are most likely to remember and play ten years from now are Same Love (Maclemore) and Get Lucky (Daft Punk) and not Royals. Lorde is a great story but the other songs have more legs imo.
3. Great to see Kacey Musgraves win just for her skill as a lyricist.
4. Show didn't start well; my friend Leela walked out after Petty's pyrotechnics. But damn it, it the Golden Gloves and Grammys can entertain us, why can't the Academy Awards?
5. Again it's subjective. but Paradise had more excellent songs than any other album, but perhaps too many weak ones.Â
6. Did Phosphorescence get any nominations? Seems badly overlooked.
7. How many of you felt like reaching for a weapon every time the camera flashed on Yoko Ono?
8. Thanks Boston Card. I've gotten some great adds to my playlist from this exercise, as have my good friends.

I'm not following this thread very well, but this is a damn fine version of a Peter Seeger song.Â

Oman, that is a terrific cover. Did not know it. Certainly better than Leonar Nimoy's cover of the same song. My favorite Pete Seeger song is "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" with the Kingston Trio's version being my favorite.
Speaking of covers, I'm discovering that many songs that I love that I thought were originals are actually covers. (I've been cleaning up my iTunes collection by putting in album names to retrieve the cover images). For example, turns out "Police On My Back" by The Clash is actually originally by The Equals, a band led by Eddy Grant of "Electric Avenue" fame.
I used to tease people about thinking songs were originals. The most classic case being my cousin who couldn't believe there was a version of "I'll be Missing You" by Puff Daddy that had no rapping. Turns out I've been the pot all along. The older I get, the less I know.

It is interesting you mention covers and remixes... This series titled "Everything is a Remix" is a great take on covers, remixes, and samples:
http://vimeo.com/14912890
The first video, which talks about remixes in songs, describes how many of Led Zeppelin's look strikingly like a number of earlier songs, including the iconic intro to Stairway to Heaven, and how in turn Led Zeppelin was re-sampled by such acts as the Beastie Boys and Enigma.
The remaining videos take on "remixes" in other artistic forums, including the connection between Star Wars and the Seven Samurai. You can catch them here:

The Grammys' best performance was from Pharrell/Daft Punk/Nile Rodgers and...Stevie Wonder:

To bring this mini-thread together, "Good Lovin'" by the Rascals sounds a lot like that Trini Lopez cover of "If I Had a Hammer".

is now charting. Heard it on the radio today.

Think many of you will like it. It's got a 70s disco groove, and the bridge has an 80s anthem vibe. Plus the guitarists seemed to have tuned their guitars like Hawaiian surf rockers.

Publius, everything's a remix:

Great series, by the way, delving into remixes in music, movies, and technology.

Completely different "Good Lovin'" but one that is in the rotation. Not sure what collection I got it off of.

Here's my favorite of 2014 so far. (TBH, it's one of the few 2014 releases I'm aware of...)

Apropos nothing, and reviving a long burried thread... Open by Rhye is playing in the coffee shop I'm in. I could tie it together with another long running thread by noting that it is a hipster third wave coffee shop in San Francisco.

For those that care, it features a nice Ethiopian blend on the espresso bar. I like Ethiopian espressos, though they are a bit hard to come by because they often have a strong flavor profile that's hard to balance if you are looking for a certain reproducibility in your espresso. I personally love to be surprised with unusual flavors, so I like the Ethiopians.

So is this the year's (2015) best songs, or the years' (all of them) best songs as in the original post? I'd hate to go through that 1972 watershed discussion again....
