Why was Clint Hartung the baserunner at third in the bottom of the 9th inning in the final game of the 1951 NL Playoff without not making a plate appearance? Elaborate please.

Most pinch hit HR’s. The reason it might stand forever is the likely introduction of the DH to the NL next year. If that happens, the number of pinch hit opportunities will be reduced significantly.
Record - St. Louis 17; SF is currently at 14.
