Ed Delahanty. One of five brothers who played MLB.
Could have been any number of things, according to witnesses. He was a boozer, known to bet on horses, had crippling debt. His team was terrible (16-43), he wanted back in the National League and hopped a train on the Canadian side to see his estranged wife. He was kicked off the train for being drunk and disorderly, specifically for brandishing a straight razor at other passengers. Supposedly he was being pursued by a mysterious man. He walked across the International Bridge, had a scuffle with the night watchman Sam Kingston. Kingston said it was too dark to tell if he jumped or fell. He was also yelling about death while he was drunk. Could have jumped, could have fallen, could have been pushed.

Yep, many great players born out of the City, especially Oakland back in the day. Thought about Jim Gentile out of Sacred Heart. Pitcher and hitter, AAA player of the year. Had a career year in ‘61, 40 plus HR, 160 something RBI, over .300. An MVP year if not for Maris and Mantle.

Amazing player. Transferred from Lincoln HS to Sacred Heart as a sophomore, wasn't allowed to play until his junior year. Stormy home life, he never met his taxi driver father, his mother was married four times, had one child each with four different men. His grandmother largely raised him. Gentile signed with the Dodgers because his high school coach doubled as a scout for the Dodgers. Gentile languished in the minors behind Gil Hodges for eight years.
Side note: Both Gentile and Rocky Colavito played for the (Kansas City) A's in 1964. Team finished last, won 57 games, though Colavito hit 34 home runs and Gentile hit 28.

The scout was Dick Murray, longtime SH coach. He used to carry in his thick wallet high school statistics for Frank Bertaina. Sometimes I would sit next to him at the monthly SF Baseball Oldtimers dinner. At the time he was furious that a bunch of other preps had been inducted into the SF HS Prep HOF over Frank. He had a point. I thought Bertaina had better stuff than Wally Bunker. Finally Frank got in .
Murray is gone now along with Bertaina and many others.
Gentile is pushing 88 and still breathing.

I would guess Timmy 2, Ed Halicki, Jonathan Sanchez, Matt Cain (perfecto), Marichal, Perry, McCormick, Heston. Heston was last.

Another East Bay HS whose baseball field is named after HOF alum: Oak Tech’s Rickey Henderson (yes, my son played there, too).
