Of all things a high change. They hit everything I threw. Daro Quiring started for Stanford followed by Klinger and Poteete and we hit them all. Final something like 21-15. Ranked first at the time. Next week I pitched against USC and they were ranked second. No runs, no hits over three but we were splitting the game and we lost late. Tom House beat us.

Tom House. Caught No 715. Then became, of all things, a QB guru.
Speaking of pitchers, I revisited Nolan Ryans stats. He pitched 27 years. Struck out over 300 hitters at age 42. From 72-80 he averaged 268 IP. 277 Ks and 144 walks a year. In ‘74 he threw 332 innings, struck out 367 and walked 202.
I think he was on a pitch count of about 250.
There have been better pitchers than Ryan. But probably never one more remarkable.

He evolved into a quarterback guru - among his pupils are Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Dak Prescott and many others, including Andrew Luck.

Interesting. One of my daughter's water polo coaches, a Stanford grad, recommends practicing with a football as well--something about the mechanics of throwing a spiral really helps.

Visited with Tom five years ago when we were doing a 60 Minutes story about elbow injuries and pitching camps. We talked about Mike Adamson and how great he could have been. If the science of today was around in 1968 he could have been another Ryan. Threw 100 easy. Spent a few days at the Baseball Ranch in Texas where Trevor Bauer gained velocity. I don’t think they taught manners.

House used steroids in the 1970s, and opined that there were six or seven pitchers on every staff that experimented with steroids.

In 1973, the Braves led the majors in HRs with 203. As a 39 year old, Aaron had 40 HRs. Darrell Evans had 43, but was usually in the high teens/low 20s -- until he experienced a power resurgence at age 36, when he went 30, 16, 40, 29 and 34 at the age of 40. Davey Johnson hit 43 HRs, never hit over 18 otherwise. Mike Lum hit a career-high16, and only hit more than ten twice more in his 15 year career.

Technically, they increased the right center distance from 375 feet to 385 feet. All the other distances remained the same.
League-wide, bombs jumped in 1973 compared to 1972 or 1974.

As a devotee of “The Plan” Lex how can you possibly justify handing over the offense to a guy who has hardly played in three years? Particularly when your current guy is doing well.
If the Niners were 3-11 maybe but Kittle, Samuel, Both Williams, Warner, Azeeh, Ward, Tartt, Juice, Greenlaw, Aijuk, Jones and Bosa are in their prime along with a roster to go all the way NOW. Why waste that talent on a gamble that the young guy has IT immediately?
