Yes, they are but they didn't play well in second half. Is Mosely out for the season or will he be back to take that cb position? That's a problem. Tenn friend says Henry will be back in 2 weeks. They will be a tough out, though it's still hard to believe a college wr is a high level QB.

Well, Tannehill was a two year starting quarterback in high school (who passed for over 5,200 yards his senior year in Texas 4A), started 20 games in college at a major program (about twice as many as Davis Mills or Kyler Murray, for example) and has started 133 NFL games at the position, so calling him a "college WR" at this point in his career is misleading even though it's technically accurate. I wouldn't consider him a "high level QB" - he is somewhere in the middle of the pack and has only been a Pro Bowler once in his career, but a number of teams vying for playoff spots are doing so without a high level QB, San Francisco for instance.

RE: Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 12-24-2021

Moseley is on target to return for the playoffs, if there are playoffs for the Niners. Tanyhill won the game with his scramble. Who knows if Azeez could have stopped him but he was out with a knee.

I’m waiting for the Trade Jimmy Chorus to sing their intermezzo.

NFL is all about parity.  I haven’t seen any team this year that wows me.  Missed last nights game, so can’t comment.  Have read it was not JG’s finest hour.

They probably end up 9-8.  No guarantee they get in.  They have blown 3 maybe 4 games this year.  If they miss, it’s going to be a tough off-season.

If they sneak in, they can beat anyone.  Get hot at right time.

Tennessee has a very good defense. I don't know why Shanahan went away from the short misdirection throws that they used so well on the first drive. They miss the corners and they really miss Mostert's speed on the quick tosses. But everybody has massive injury woes. It's not only the soft Stanford team.

Corners, absolutely. 2nd half conversions for Tannehill:

3rd & 15; 24 yd pass
3rd & 7; 18 yd pass
3rd & 10; 13 yd pass
3rd & 23; 42 yd pass
3rd & 10; 12 yd pass
3rd & 8; 13 yd pass

That's where the game was lost.

Well, what about a first half in which they should have been up 21-3. But instead came out tied 10-10.  It’s like a baseball game where you leave a ton of runners  on base early, then your closer blows the one run lead…..

10-0 at half, but I understand your point. I missed the first half, only watched the second, and was away from the TV when Jimmy threw his second pic.

FWIW, 49ers are in if they a) beat HOU, b) NO sweeps, and c) PHI loses to DAL, all very likely.  TEN was never a given, but beating the trainwreck of HOU is a must.  And PHI is OK but they'd have to sweep too.

NO sweeps is "very likely"? They are starting Ian Book at QB and are currently 2.5 point underdogs to Miami on Monday night.

If they beat Houston, a lot of things will have to go wrong for them not to go in.
Root for Vikings to lose one.

How can we, in good faith, root against a Shawvita protege?

lex24 - lex24 - 12-26-2021

Niners need Philadelphia to lose one and Minnesota to lose one.  Or one of those teams to lose 1 and NO to lose 2.

Niners win 9-8 tiebreaker against Minn and Philly.  They probably lose 9-8 tie breaker to NO.

Once the players leave Stanford they are enemy except for those on the Niners and Raiders.

RE: Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 12-27-2021

The Niners wanted the Rams to beat the Vikings (Rams won), Giants to beat the Eagles (didn't happen), Cowboys over WFT (Cowboys won big), Lions over the Falcons (didn't happen) and Dolphins over the Saints (tonight at New Orleans, Dolphins favored by 3). Eagles routed the Giants, sliding into the #7, final wild card slot.

MSNBC's Steve Kornacki gave the Niners an 87% playoff chance prior to those games.  If both teams finish 9-8, the Niners have the advantage due to the week 2 win over the Eagles.

Rams beat the Vikings and the Cardinals lost to the Colts, putting the Rams in the division lead.  The Cardinals are 10-5, but on a three game slide. Niners can't leapfrog the Cardinals because the Cards swept the Niners.

So in sum, these five teams have clinched an NFC playoff spot:

Packers, Rams, Bucs, Cowboys, Cardinals.

Two spots are open, currently occupied by the 49ers and Eagles, both 8-7.

Other contenders are Saints (7-7), Vikings and Falcons (both 7-8), WFT (6-8).

Next week, Niners have the 4-11 Texans at home, then play at the Rams. Be nice and smart if the Rams rest their starters.

I remain nervous about the Niners' chances.  New Orleans sweeping I think is going to happen (think Book is a gamer and will do at least reasonably well tonight).  Hope I'm wrong.

Also a bit concerned that when Philly plays the Cowboys, the latter will be in "rest players" mode for playoff game the following week.

As stated previously, I hope the 'Niners finish 9-8 (just don't see them beating the Rams, even if they need it to get to 9-8).  But even with that, they will need some help.  Also, I think the SF is the WC team most feared by the division leaders, meaning they will not give them any help down the stretch.  Losing to Tennessee (as well as as few other games that SF could easily have had) may come back to bite them.  Badly.

Garoppolo didn't practice today due to a thumb injury; will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

Wait, when did the playoffs expand to 7 teams per conference?  Did that happen with the move to 17 games?  Because, apparently there is no such thing as too much football.  Golden geese and such.

Actually there were 14 playoff teams last year, as part of the new CBA. The only change this year is that one of the wild card games will be on Monday night.

The 17-game schedule was also part of the new CBA but implementation was delayed until this season.
