Amazing that USF could win two straight NCAA's and didn't have a gym to practice in. Practiced at SI and played at Kezar with their big games at the Cow Palace. The Kezar floor was like the old Maples floor. I had little jumping ability and I remember driving for a high school layup, hit a spring and bashed my arm against the backboard.
In 1958 Stanford ruined a perfect USF regular season with a one point win. You were probably there Bobbbbbb.

Speights in the portal. I think SMU (close to home, solid academics/MBA in the region, losing their top 2 RBs) would be a great fit.

Any word on Pryts and Sarell, or what's the thinking with them, are they likely to return?
Also, if somebody knows off the top of his/her head, if say Hamilton, Swann or Williams were to decide to return after all, is there room in the scholarship accounting?

Sarell is a junior with no early NFL prospects. He'll be back, no reason for there to be any news on him. No word on Pryts.
Here is the thread keeping a tally on the scholarship count, where we are currently at 83 assuming everyone currently in the portal does in fact transfer: https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=18725
If a couple of the guys you mention want to return, there should be space because a couple guys are not in the portal that I don't expect to be invited back for a 5th year (JJ Parson and Treyjohn Butler), and Trey Stratford could medically retire.

Schaffer was never in the portal, as I recall, but Eboh and Pryts were.

Either that or they are hedging their bets/getting in shape for their "next" school. I don't know how Shaw et al would view this situation, so I am not so sure it means they are returning. If they haven't removed their name from the portal, I think it is premature to say they will come back. Hope they do though. Maybe we will get more definite info pretty soon.

The panic over players entering the portal may have been premature. It's still a big negative if Williams and/or Swann do go through with their transfers (and to a lesser extent Hamilton and/or Hattis, especially if both), but it is clear from the interview with Bo Peek that the large number of portal entries was being driven by Shaw's openness to fifth years exploring their opportunities. He could have played hardball, and maybe we would have had fewer players entering the portal, but it probably would have meant that those who entered would have definitely been gone.
When all is said and done, we had two out of the three juniors who could have gone to the NFL come back, and of the 11 significant contributors you identified, currently only five are in the portal, and we will see how many go through with a transfers.
Also, from the interview with Bo Peek, I gathered that some players not in the portal have been told that the availability of their roster spots is contingent upon availability, as it should be.

He could have played hardball, and maybe we would have had fewer players entering the portal, but it probably would have meant that those who entered would have definitely been gone.I agree that off-season attrition through departures is not so bad even if we lose Williams and Swann given the offsetting news of so many returnees (a lot more returnees than last offseason when we had more declarations/retirements and only 3 fifth year senior contributors), but having starters like Swann, Williams, Hamilton and Hattis transfer would be very unusual and not a great reflection on the program or those two position coaches. Costello is less of a bad look given the presence of Mills. Hopefully, one or two of the aforementioned four will return.

Hmm. Seems like Shaw is encouraging 5th year guys to really prove they want to be Stanford football players and that they will be key contributors. Makes sense, because if you want to root out guys who maybe were more interested in the degree than being football players, or are ones you would prefer not to have back to make room for younger players with more upside, encouraging 5th years to explore transfer options is the way to do it. You don’t single guys out so much by encouraging all 5th years to explore transfer options, and it’s easier to tell the ones you aren’t asking back they aren’t being offered a 5th hear, if they volunteered to go in the transfer portal.
And then there is whatever added residual recruiting benefit that comes from having a record of not hindering transfers in any way. The fact there are no Stanford transfer portal entries for non-grad transfers sort of speaks for itself.
How many transfer portal entries can be welcomed back assuming no other early retirements, and still be under 85 with incoming Frosh class?

Agree probably right.
Keep in mind per Langdude’s chart we are at 83 if all 9 In the portal leave. We expect to add 2 incoming Frosh to the chart that’s 85. Less any retirements

I would imagine there has to be 1-2 retirements not in transfer portal because it's football and retirements happen as a matter of course.
FWIW, the Michael Williams Twitter page still shows "Stanford Football" on it.

They all do, until they don't. He'll change it if/when he commits somewhere.
Also interesting: 3 transfer portal crystal balls for KJ to Mississippi State. KJ + Leach in a shaken-up SEC? That'll be fun. I'll definitely watch.
