Didn't see Keck after the first series on Sat (presumed injured), so this ended up being moot.  Reid played the whole game at OLB, and Robinson and Damuni played the whole game without anyone to spell them at ILB.

If J. Fox is back this week, then maybe Reid can provide some depth at ILB again.  We may see on the depth chart tomorrow...

Notably, Aeneas DiCosmo saw his first snaps this week at OLB, not ILB. (FWIW, I actually support that move should it be permanent.)

Walk-On Union Watch. Five non-scholarship players got PT against the Beavs. In addition...

RE: 2020 Stanford Football Personnel - BostonCard - 12-15-2020

Tremayne is the third leading receiver on the team (behind Fehoko and Wilson), accounting for 1 in every 7 receiving yards on the team.  It's even more impressive because (injuries aside), wide receiver is one of the deepest positions on the team.

  • RB Cameron McFarlane, jr. He made his season debut; last played in a game in 2018. Cool that he got some PT!
  • DE Trey LaBounty, jr. Also made his season debut, and also last played a game in 2018.
  • OLB Caleb Phillips, sr. He has appeared in every game this season, but has yet to record a tackle.
  • TE Kyle McCombs, sr. He has appeared in every game this season, but has not recorded a statistic.
  • ILB Jake Lynch,  jr. He played in his third game.
In addition...
  • WR Brycen Tremayne, a junior former walk-on, started and had a big game: four catches for 58 yards. He also chipped in with a tackle. He impresses me more each week.
  • OLB Thunder Justice Keck, a senior former walk-on, started and recorded two tackles.
  • P Ryan Sanborn, a sophomore former walk-on, had an up-and-down game; he punted four times for a 32.2-yard average, including two downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. He also threw an incomplete pass on an attempted two-point converstion.
  • S J.J. Parson, a 5th year former walk-on, played on ST.
  • S Noah Williams, a senior former walk-on, played a lot, for some reason. Had six tackles, but got beat more than once.
  • ILB Spencer Jorgensen, a sophomore former walk-on, did NOT play. Moving him back to safety perhaps?

Back again with some comments!
- I didn't see McFarlane or LaBounty, but it's possible they both came in on ST. I wish the full game didn't get pulled from YouTube!
- Sanborn only had one shanked punt, I think. The other 3 were from midfield-ish, and the one that didn't land "inside" the 20 landed AT the 20. The "failed two-point conversion" was an awful snap-hold combo that rendered an XP kick impossible, so Sanborn had to improvise.
- I was incredibly worried Antoine was injured after seeing Williams out there so much (boy is he bad). Antoine did finish out the game so I think he's ok.
- Jorgensen is a sophomore walk-on at a brand-new position. There's a reason we tried to get Gabe Reid to play ILB for a while. We don't want him out there on defense (yet). I'm 99% sure I saw him on ST though.

Thanks for this info, SMF. I did not witness the failed two-point conversion because ESPN was still showing a basketball game, so I did not realize the particulars. It did seem rather un-Shaw-like to go for a two-pointer after the first TD. I'll correct the post above.

I did realize Jorgensen is new, of course. I was just mildly surprised that he got zero snaps when we really need a body out there. If Williams can get snaps at safety, and if Jorgensen is good enough to play as a true frosh (albeit at safety), then why not even put him in for a down or two when we have only two scholarship bodies at ILB? But they didn't put Lynch out there, either, so I guess they really do not want to risk anything.

Agree! We are so lucky that he was not recruited heavily out of high school... A two-star recruit per 247 with only one offer, from Harvard.

FWIW, on the new depth chart for UCLA, Jorgensen is no longer listed. It's possible he got hurt. (Jake Lynch is now ILB2.)

RE: 2020 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 12-18-2020

Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-frosh scholarship players did not appear against the Beavs.
Center Drake Nugent made his season debut.

Crazy that in the space of a week, Zahran Manley went from DNP-CD to starting. But such is the state of our defense.

M*A*S*H Unit. The following players did not appear against the Beavs due to injury or COVID protocol.
Linebacker Aeneas DiCosmo returned from injury to play his first game of the season.

RE: 2020 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 12-19-2020

Frosh Force. Nine true freshmen played against the Beavs with one debut. None recorded any statistics unless noted.

RE: 2020 Stanford Football Personnel - Phogge - 12-19-2020

Thought I saw Hinton in on one play.

He might have been. I did not see him, but I could have missed him. FWIW, he was not listed on the game participation report...

Drake Nugent got his first action as the 7th OL in a super-jumbo package. Hinton was the 6th, as usual.

Thanks, SMF, for confirming Phogge's recollection. I changed the list.

Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-frosh scholarship players did not appear against the Brewins.
  • Quarterback
    • Jack West, jr.
  • Tight End
    • Bradley Archer, so.
  • Wide Receiver
    • Marcus Graham, so. (played in zero games this season)
  • Center
    • Drake Nugent, so.
  • Outside Linebacker
    • Thunder Justice Keck, sr.
    • Caleb Kelly, jr. (played in zero games this season)
  • Inside Linebacker
    • Spencer Jorgensen, so.

Couple quick notes on this:
- Keck was injured. He "earned" his scholly through ST play and was good there - no reason he wouldn't be at least playing there if healthy.
- Caleb Kelly may be switching to ILB to balance out numbers (Aeneas DiCosmo is switching permanently to OLB as well I believe) and thus took another pseudo-redshirt. I don't expect him to have much impact there but clearly the body is needed.
- I'm a bit surprised Archer is logged as having zero snaps, so I did a quick re-watch and that's actually correct (unless he played STs, not sure). There were heavy heavy doses of Harrington and Fisk in the game, and Archer was actually listed as the backup FB to Heimuli on the UCLA depth chart, which I found pretty weird.

Thanks, SMF. I had also figured that Keck must have been injured since we would have at least seen him on ST, but had not heard anything about it, so thought I'd start there. Thanks for your confirmation; I'll change the above.

I was also surprised about Archer, especially given our 3-TE sets. Agree that it is odd to see Archer as a FB; he is not built like one. But without Symonds, I guess they had to list someone as the backup...

RE: 2020 Stanford Football Personnel - needle - 01-11-2021

The Stanford site lists Caleb Kelly as having played five games, recording 20 tackles.

I don't think that's right, so I'm left wondering...does anyone have an idea who actually notched those defensive stats?

Well if this were 1953 I would say The Shadow knows. Bobbbbbbb and I were addicted to radio.
