Not if your goal is the WNBA and the team that is going to win it all isn't going to showcase you or give you a lot of "for sure" minutes.

So which of Oregon, UConn, and Baylor do you think is likely to showcase and/or give more minutes to Dijonai than Stanford?

I don't know, naturally. What she thinks is much more relevant. However, I think Oregon probably would be the answer. That said, there is no certainty wherever she goes. It just may be she felt she had certainty at Stanford and that certainty was that she wasn't going to play enough to get her drafted.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - chimera - 05-01-2020

Could she really be thinking she doesn't get enough playing time at Stanford next season or would not be featured enough?  When healthy, which she clearly wasn't after a very few games this past season even while she was still playing, she was a starter, was one of the players, along with Williams, who were hyped before the season (stories, interviews on TV, etc.) as leaders of the team, spoken well of by the coaches, all that.  If she doesn't think she could do well enough at Stanford to show out for the draft, she probably wouldn't be drafted no matter the system or team.  We've seen so many players get drafted, and some like Karlie, who did not seem to be at that level, yet still got a shot at the WNBA.

I do think she could be drafted, and could stick in a tough league.  Given how she was presented by the program, clearly they thought highly of her and planned for her to be a key player and leader.  Seems a stretch to now say the coaches were maybe not treating her fairly or right, if that was the inference from her interview, which I did not listen to, but that's what some who did got from it.  If they didn't have big plans for her, they don't send her off to be team representative to the P-12 shows, for instance.

If the main idea transferring is to be better positioned for a draft, seems to me the best way would be to show good health with some efficient stats, maybe work on some weaknesses.  Some of it was probably rust but she was up and down early last season, great games, and some where she looked out of sorts, and then she was out for good.  The WNBA is a very physical league, so her style would probably fit in well.  I don't think that going to a different style of offense is going to matter, very much. Probably actually better to thrive in a more structured offense, more like what she would probably find in the pros.  WNBA makes it look looser sometimes but that's because the players are so much better, not because they just let them loose to run and gun all the time.  Much better defenses there than in college.

Neither of our grad transfers out, (Thompson and Sniezek) did all that well statistically at their new home.  Grad transfers right now seem to be overused, a grass is always greener sort of thing, and they don't always work out getting a player more minutes or better stats, whatever they may be hoping for.  If they are just looking for a new experience, that's one thing, but beyond that, it's a crap shoot, really.  Sometimes even if things are not perfect, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't, so to speak.

If you believe that the staff doesn't see you in a light that will give you the minutes you need, moving on to a "crap shoot" is better than staying with a known "won't get it done". Not to say her read of the situation was accurate, but if that is what she expected to happen if she stayed, her actions make perfect sense.

if we compare to marta sniezek, marta averaged 37 minutes per game for notre dame and likely would have averaged less than 10 if she had stayed at stanford.

So after averaging 14 points and 7 rebounds as a JR she now thinks no room on the floor ? Ego running away

I am not sure it is running away. It may be facing reality and looking for a better opportunity. One could say KJ did the same. The situations are certainly different because QBs do not normally share minutes, but I can see parallels. It is also a perception question. What the student athlete believes to be the situation is not necessarily what we fans perceives as the situation, or what the coaches see as the situation. It is like leaving any job and going elsewhere. Their are risks and possible benefits.

For instance, I don't think Stevens enjoyed her year there very much. And the post who grad transferred there this year hardly got off the bench. Di is much better of course, but they do have C. Williams kinda playing her position. Of course it's also not so easy to bond with just one year to play. I don't really want to see her at Oregon, but think that might be the best fit for her. They have a bunch of really talented players coming in and she could be the knowledgeable vet for them....and whatever classes she takes there would be a piece of cake after Stanford.

Not true on Stevens.  She was at UConn 2 years and did enjoy her time there.  She earned her degree and wanted the WNBA more than grad school.  Some were surprised by her decision only because she told the staff she was returning.  She decided she was ready for the WNBA.  The expectation is Westbrook will do the same.

I have no problem with players like Sniezak or Moschkau grad transferring for more playing time.  I was talking about when a player feels like they are being held back by our coaches or system and they would flourish and do much better on another team.  Yes Sniezak played a ton of minutes at Notre Dame but I wouldn't say she was more successful there in any way.  She played a ton of minutes on a team that struggled to score and yet she only scored 4.9 points a game.  The team finished 13-18 and Notre Dame fans were constantly frustrated at her reluctance to shoot the ball.  Seems very similar to her time at Stanford.

Actually three stories here. All great reads. But the scheduling part is one that has affected Stanford for years

you could be right. I don't have inside info. But my understanding was that Stevens didn't want to play in the post, but because of her height that's where Geno wanted her to play...which made her appear less than blissful about her situation and contributed to the decision to leave early. And in general Geno plays 6 players (sometimes 7) even in blowouts so if you aren't on his "a" list you sit on the bench regardless of how good you might have been in a previous reincarnation.

A 6-6 kid less than blissful about a coach expecting her to play and score some points in the post.  Oh the horrors!  Breanna Stewart was expected to score in the post and everywhere else on the court and that didn't hurt her game.  Azura shot 60% overall in one year at UConn but only 18% from beyond the arc.  Had she shown the ability to hit perimeter shots in games (reportedly she made them in practice) Geno would have run an offense for her to score from everywhere on the court.  She didn't do that.  Stevens didn't start because she played behind 2 AAs in Collier and Williams.  She was the first off the bench.  She would have started had she stayed for the '18-19 season but she moved on.  Probably the right call.

Geno doesn't want to play only 6 or 7 players; he goes with the players he trusts.  MM coached the same way.  Over the past several years I can't think of one player on his bench who should have played more minutes in competitive games.  A lot of UConn games are blow-outs.  If GA is trying to develop a trusted rotation and on-court chemistry he can't worry about the score.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - Jskass - 05-03-2020

all the more reason that if I were Carrington I'd resist the temptation to try UConn....she could end up being on the bench and really hurting her chances...not that I want to see her in the Pac-12....I do wonder though why with her knees she's compelled to do this at all but then again it is her life and she knows herself and her body best. Either way, loved watching her play here as she was always aggressive and created action (and sometimes contact) in a team where not everyone was comfortable being aggressive!

When you're passionate about something you excel at,  often it's body be damned, you want to play as long as you can.

Great podcast interview with Tara, including a really interesting answer to the question, "When people hear Tara VanDerveer, what do you hope they think of?" Unsurprisingly, her answer had very little to do with her and much more to do with the impact she wants to have on others...

FWIW, and in happier news, a poster on the UConn Boneyard board who lives in Santa Cruz and is neighbors and friendly with Haley Jones's grandfather said they ran into her grandfather yesterday and he said Haley will be ready to play whenever basketball can resume. So, assuming that's true, really good news to hear that whatever it was, it seems likely she will be back to normal come the fall!

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - mbdude - 05-06-2020

Haley has some pictures of her at Sand City, enjoying the dunes, on her Instagram account. Appears to be all good
