Wow! Trey Lantz - old spanish trail - 04-29-2021

I've always thought they wanted to go after Wilson but then he had great pro day, and the Jets climbed aboard. So, they were stuck with 3rd and no Wilson. Lantz may be great...or not but it's a more exciting pick than Jones.

49ers choose Lance. Just happy not Jones

RE: Wow! Trey Lantz - BobK - 04-29-2021

Much more exciting pick than Jones. Be interesting to see where Fields and Lance end up

I wanted Lance.  Having said that, I have no clue whom among Lance, Fields and Jones will be stars and who will be busts.

Last time QB’s went 1-3, ‘99 I think. Couch, McNabb, Akili Smith. One very good NFL QB. And two flat out busts.

Jones is going to be uber motivated. Guy got a ton of sh-t heaped on him simply because the so-called  pundits were certain Niners were picking Jones. Now it will be that he dropped.  Which is nonsense.  He will prob go where he was expected to.

Fields went to Da Bears.

Jones to the Pats

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - jonnyss - 04-29-2021

i'm really glad we took lance, and imo new england is the perfect system for jones.

Man, the insiders sure had it wrong on this one. Bamboozled. I really liked Jones, have not seen a lick of Lance. Looks like at least one more year of Mr Jimmy.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 04-29-2021

Turns out Jones would have been available at #12...if the 49ers wanted him.  Which they clearly did not.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 04-30-2021

Giants now alone in second place at 15-9.  Dodgers and Red Sox both lost to fall to 16-10 (tied with Oakland).

One minor, tiny, insignificant issue...SF is 3-3 against teams with a .500 or better record.  Dodgers are 6-7, and have by definition played a tougher schedule.

Mick, you are the King of small sample sizes! :)

Love that Giants are off to great start. And I got to send my Dodger buddy a photo of the standings with Giants on top.  Hey it may only be for a day, but I’ll take it!  If they if finish within 10 games of Dodgers I’ll be happy. And very surprised.  Cause that will mean they’ve had a good year.

May will be interesting.  Schedule picks up, starting tonight. Giants don’t play Blueheads until May21.  Then they play them something like 7 times in 10 days.

By end of May we should have a better read.

Maybe.  Had  Niners sat at 12 and the other 4 got picked, NE may have jumped ahead of them. Or Chicago. Or even New Orleans. What the Niners did by going to three a month ahead of the draft is give themselves plenty of time to determine who they were going to take and put themselves in the position of being able to call their shot knowing the first two would be gone. Yeah they gave up a lot. But if Lance turns out to be all that it was worth it. If he doesn’t and he’s a bust then,  so long Kyle

Shanahan really did roll the dice on this one, but it might have bought him a year...it would take at least a year to train a rookie quarterback.  Or maybe we'll just have to wait until Garoppolo gets a torn meniscus or a sprained ankle or a hangnail, and then we'll see how quickly Lance adjusts to the speed of the NFL...

Giants are in first place.

Anybody else think we may not see Lance for awhile if the Niners win it all and Jimmy is All Pro?

Of course, but that's a big if. It would be optimal for Lance to get to sit and learn behind a highly successful Garoppolo for a few years and then take over when he's ready. We can dream.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - French Rage - 04-30-2021

I can't pretend to know too much about Lance or his strengths/weaknesses, but to mortgage the next couple years worth of first round picks on an FCS QB just feels like a bad decision.  If he falls to you at your original pick, maybe, but to go that hard for someone it would need to be a can't miss prospect like Lawrence as seen as.  (Yes Lawrence could flop but he feels like a more proven commodity than Lance.)

That would indeed be ideal. If Garoppolo wins the Superbowl this next season, then it will be interesting. He is set to make a ton of money. Less than the championship he is probably gone. Lance gets next year, subject to Garoppolo's health. Then he might be #1 ready or not.

I think Jimmy G.'s on his last legs.  He last looked really good in 2019, but multiple leg injuries have robbed him of mobility and (to my limited perception) confidence.  Yes, if the 49ers win or get to the Super Bowl, Lance will have a nice long apprenticeship, but I think the Niners will be fortunate to get to 8-8.

BTW, here are the overall grades on the 49er draft from a variety of sources.  Most like Lance, most think the USC safety is a sleeper, most think Banks and Thomas were taken too early, a few think Banks was a reach:

The Ringer    A (Lance, Banks, Sermon, Moore, Mitchell will all contribute to return to great ground game)
Draft Kings    A  (Liked Lance and Sermon a lot, thinks Mitchell and Thomas have potential)
Sporting News:    A-
MSN:   B+ (Likes Lance, Thomas and Lenoir)
NFL.com: B+  (really likes Lance, Banks and Moore, also likes Thomas, Hufanaga, Sermon Mitchell)
USA Today B+ (Lance was a swing for the fences, DBs Thomas will contribute, Oregon's Lenoir should contribute
USA Today   B (and they think the 49ers should have taken Fields, Banks was a reach)
NBC Sports    B (Liked Lance and Banks)
Yahoo      B (Liked Lance and Banks)
Cleveland.com   B- (Liked Moore and Tufanga, won't know on Lance for a few years)
NY Post    C (Lance won't live up to expectations and Sermon will start at RB)

I don’t think Shanahan is on the hot seat in ‘21. Now if team goes 6-10 again things could get interesting. But they had a zillion injuries last year and are a year removed from SB.
I also expect them to be very good next year. Albeit in a very tough, to perhaps brutal, division.

Remember how Walsh broke in Montana?  He essentially had a package for him once they got in the red zone.  Played some. Got feet wet. In area he could succeed.  Different circumstances as that was a lousy team.  But I could see Lance getting series here and there a la Taysom Hill a few years back.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 05-02-2021

Giants are 17-11 after 28 games, matching their best 28 game start in the last 15 years.  Each of the other two times that the Giants started 17-11 in that time period (2010 and 2014) they won the World Series.
