Wow, perhaps it's time to take a breath. There is a difference in being intense and being on task. Baseball is an on task game except probably for short relievers facing a jam.
Concentration is critical but you need to stay loose and if the blood is pumping step out of the box. We couldn't beat Santa Clara at State when they were Top 5 but in my last game against them we were loose from the start. When we went ahead in the 10th they tightened up, not us. It was our CWS and a great memory.

As in any close game, there were good things and bad.
Focusing on the good:
Weiermiller went 3.2 innings - 2 hits, no walks, no runs.
Palisch went 3.1 innings - 1 hit, no walks, no runs.
These guys have shown enough in the past that one would think they could be foundations of this year's bullpen. Up to now, Weiermiller has been going through a rough patch and Palisch has struggled a bit coming back from his injury. Both had very strong outings - hope for more going forward.
Grant Burton is a junior who hasn't played much up to now. He comes in relatively frequently as a defensive replacement late in games. Going into this game he was 0-3 on the season, 1-12 for his career. In the 11th, he leads off with a triple but gets stranded. In the 12th, he comes up with runners on 1st and 2nd, one out, and gets the winning hit (officially a single, but would have been a double in regular game flow). The team absolutely mobs him - seemed like a popular teammate. 2-2 on the night. Very nice to see.

Cal made some curious moves in the 12th.
To start the inning they took out pitcher Villers who had one inning of work, and had looked pretty good drawing a soft liner and two strikeouts to get out of the 11th. They bring in a kid who has pitched 0.1 innings this year with an ERA of 81. Then, with runners on second and third and one out, they elect to not walk Burton to load the bases, even though a 0.100 hitter was on deck.
It was almost as if Cal had decided it was time to end this thing and get on the bus back home.

It is not possible to overstate the importance of this win, even though it was a midweek non-conference tilt. After losing on a walk off then being dominated the next day, going down 5-0 with two key bats missing from the lineup and a struggling staff felt like game over. Instead, the team rallied, found new heroes and walked off with a win and renewed spirit that will carry them the rest of the way.

He has been playing with a pulled muscle in his back for the past two weeks. It worsened on Saturday. He hopes aggressive treatment will have him in the lineup this weekend. It's bee a rough year for Tawa. Hamstring early, then shoulder and thumb, now this.

Come back out and play another one today. Beck pitched well, and I would not call that pitch a mistake. Just tip your cap to the hitter for putting a barrel on that one! Stanford had their chances, sometimes that expectation of the longball can take you out of a productive AB.

Good new/bad news there as well.
Dixon looks like he'll be a big part of the rotation going forward. A nice save and really coming on this frosh season.
On the bad news side, Grech has been somewhat off for awhile. His last three outings were: 0.0 innings pitched, 2 hits, 2 runs, pulled; 0.0 innings pitched, 1 hit, 1 run, pulled; 0.2 innings pitched, 0 hits, 1 walk, pulled.
Actually thought he looked much better yesterday than the previous outings, but it was notable he was pulled with 1 out in the ninth.
It makes me suspect he is nursing some fairly notable injury, or a bunch of small ones.

So it is safe to assume that Oregon's HC came back for the free Nike gear. Not sure how the plug was needed in his interview!!! Pitching staff better get their heads on straight. Walking the world is not going to help the cause!!!!

We're throwing the kitchen sink at them on the mound. We've already gone through Matthews, O'Rourke, Palisch, and Weiermiller. I guess Dixon pitches the eighth and Grech the ninth? But what if we go extra innings? Hope we can go ahead in the ninth. Big.
