So very true. Lol

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 08-25-2022

I wonder how concerned Shanahan and Lynch are based upon the results of tonight's 17-0 loss to the Texans?

Davis Mills went 6/10 for 58 yards, an INT and a TD.

Meaningless game.

We knew and know the concerns - o-line and the trials and tribulations of a young untested QB.  My guess if the former is what keeps them up at night.

Never mind what Shanahan and Lynch think. What does OF think? His guy just went 7 of 11 for 49 yards against the Texans. That's 4.5 yards per attempt and a 73.7 rating. Ooof.

The benchmark over/under for Trey is taking a lead well into the fourth quarter in the NFC Championship game. Just for fun, I'll take the under. . . .

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Giants - 08-25-2022

Why would anyone be concerned based on the results of a meaningless exhibition game?

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 08-25-2022

The only concern is the O line. If McGlinchy is ok they may move McKivitz to LG. They also need Brunskill back. Two holds by Burford.

Shanahan and Lynch have bet their jobs on the Lance Project. So worrying about it is fruitless. Two more years before a #1 pick can see the field.

Not all that worried about the #1 picks.  Lynch and Shanahan seem to be able to pick All Pros after the first round.

O line might have issues.  The starting guards played last night, and there was some real matador activity going on.

Hands down, the worst player was RB Sermon, their 3rd round selection from Ohio State.  Takes the hand off and slows down every time.  Can't/won't block.  They have six backs on the roster, four will make the 53 man.  Sermon won't.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 08-26-2022

It's not possible for the pre-season exhibitions to be any more meaningless. Kyle Shanahan made clear he'd rather not play the games and just have joint practices instead. That mentality can't help but seep into the heads of the players expected to be the big producers. You can't get a worse exhibition of football than this:

1. Most starters are held out
2. The ones who play know it is meaningless, and have heard the head coach say as much
3. There are some guys on the field who know they will make the team while others are giving it their all to make it
4. No game planning, no intensity, no consequences for W or L

It's simply an awful product not worth watching. I have seen a grand total of about 3/4 of a single pre-season game this month, among all the games played, and most of that was Packers-Niners. None of the Vikings. None of the Texans. No other team either.

It seems logical to assume the interior OL will be the weakest link on the team, and we don't know how Lance will perform in the offense on schedule or off schedule. Lots of unknowns, but seemingly a lot of upside as they all gain experience.

Curious OF, how many meaningless games have you played in an NFL preseason? Just wondering because you seen to know exactly what an individuals mindset is while playing. I guess you played just like #50 in the second half, whiffing on blocks because it really doesn’t matter. Why should he try, he’s just going to get cut.

How about trying a little analysis instead of being Kyle’s mind reader. Maybe like Mick’s take on Sermon.

I guess Lance went out there and didn’t care if he threw a bunch of ducks. He’s had a third of Purdy’s snaps since high school but no problem. Just an exhibition so why try?

I honestly don't understand what has you so agitated, Phogge. I don't think I need to play in an NFL exhibition game to understand that if the leader doesn't prioritize something, the followers won't either.  I'm not putting any stock in or drawing any conclusions from these pre-season exhibition games, good or bad. They are just not indicative of what teams will be like when the games count.

Kyle Shanahan didn't even seem that bothered by the performance in Houston. He even laughed several times, which I don't think he does for a regular game.

Phogge isn’t alone here OF

When I posted in the Giants thread that they should sell because they were going nowhere - on June 8 or 9 - I had enough information to conclude the Giants were pretenders and should be liquidating for younger assets in the interest of being more competitive in the future. My point is when I feel conviction I am not bashful about making my case. But I'm also comfortable not drawing conclusions when I don't have enough data to feel confident one way or another.

I don't have enough information to conclude much about the Niners at this point and said why I don't. There's just too many mixed data points and unknowns for me to have any conviction about how the offense will perform at this point, but I do believe the defense should be very good.

If this were Thunderdome right about this time I would utter our four letter credo but alas this isn’t T Dome.

Data points? LOL.

The old saying, “You throw enough s… at the wall, some will stick” is applicable at this time.

Anyone who constantly reminds us of his/her correct predictions while ignoring all the incorrect ones deserves a “Cosell”, an award given periodically to anyone who regularly crows about how right they were while, at the same, burying all their misstatements.

Congrats to one of The Cardboard’s own for winning this prestigious award.

You also must have rotator cuff issues.

“Abecedarians”.  I had a public school education…..  But thanks for expanding my limited vocabulary.

:)

Thank God I still talk to O and am trying to set up a lunch. Can you imagine how he would handle the !mpresario of Data Points?

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 08-27-2022

My reference to the Giants assessment was simply an example of how I only have conviction when I feel good about the information available to me. It is y'all who are patting me on the back by implicitly expressing you believe I made the correct call, not me.

It's just kind of hard for me to wrap my head around people getting bent out of shape because someone doesn't feel they have enough good information to have a conviction about something.

My SO asks me my opinion on things all the time. Whenever she asks me to say what I think is going to happen with something including sports outcomes, and I don't know, I tell her I have no idea. She says "you must have a leaning one way or the other."  When I say I don't she hates it. I'm too good at being a devil's advocate and arguing both sides when I don't feel conviction, which makes me even less inclined to make a guess. I don't mind being wrong. I just don't see the point of being forced to make a choice when yer basically flipping a coin. It doesn't betray any knowledge or wisdom when correct, and I can be "held responsible" for being wrong when I never thought I had the answer. I don't "write checks my body can't cash," know and am comfortable with my limitations.

"You also must have rotator cuff issues."

Now that's funny.

thesaurus.com can be your friend. I was a mechanical engineering major, no time or need for vocabulary during my school days. . . .

AYFKM.  If I know one thing it’s that I ain’t gonna be patting you on the back. You do that enough for all of us.

As for “conviction “ relating to the Giants, I guaran flipping tee you that there are several people on this board that know more about the Giants, their current state, history and the way the franchise operates than you.

Heck, ive been following the team and organization religiously for close to 60 years. I catch about 130- 150 games a year. Admittedly at this stage of my life almost exclusively on TV. Yet, my history etc pales compared to some on this board.

I will admit I get a kick out of “y’all”. Reminds me of how Rick Barry got out of his contract with the Virginia Squires so he could return to the Warriors.
