Are changes needed to drive this home to the players? Of course. But don't blame the players, they're college students. If you want to put your money where your mouth is, sign one of the guys to an NIL deal yourself. It's completely legal now.

Great article. Two reactions:
- From other Stanford fans who road trip regularly, Autzen stands out as consistently having the worst home fans. I still plan to go someday if we ever get back to respectability, but I will wear a face shield so the spit doesn't hit me.
- That football player got a s***ty education om HS and at UO if he doesn't know the differences between his situation and actual slavery. He willingly made a barter exchange for a college education - an option that wasn't available to 90%+ of his classmates and one that many would likely have taken if they had a skill worth that barter. He could have walked away any time he wanted, unlike slaves who would have been killed if they tried it. He's not wrong about fans not understanding the game inside the game, but that point gets largely lost on his horribly entitled attitude

I congratulate him on his degree and wish him luck. Probably a good career move for him. More likely to be able to finish a season in lax than FB, and probably bigger pro prospects too. That's not a slam on him, that's just reality.

If there was a study that compared the financial benefits of players who declared for the draft when they were first eligible vs. those that stayed in college, it would be interesting. I haven't seen one. However, such a study would suffer from selection bias anyway. Many guys who leave early are "can't miss" prospects that have a very good shot at a long career. It wouldn't reflect the outcomes for the other players, who are more the ones we are talking about here.

That Canzano article is a good one. Makes me wonder if the actual absurd end of the chaos is allowing players to do in-season transfers. Need an RB at Stanford? hit the portal and see who you can bring in for the week 6 tilt with State U.

State U gave up football in the 90's. Title Nine suit. Hayward, SF, Sonoma, Chico all caved eventually. Sac State, Fresno, SD didn't. Humboldt finally ended their program a few years ago. Was a great conference to play in. No Scholies but some very good teams. Haskell, Tierney, Holmgren, Reid all coached at Lake Merced. Bob Toledo (national record holder across all divisions for TD passes) had UCLA at #2 for awhile. A lot of Stanford grads' kids were taught and coached by SF State grads. My catcher Tom Martinez was the first throwing coach for Tom Brady.
A f****** shame.

I really enjoyed the CSU football programs. During my four years at SCU, we played Cal Poly-SLO, SFSU, Hayward, Northridge, UC Davis and St. Mary's all four years. We actually played Cal Poly SLO five times in my four years there, including a playoff loss in 1980. We played Humboldt, Pomona and SJSU three times, and Chico and Sonoma twice each. In other years, we played Long Beach, Fullerton, Fresno St., not to mention UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara. Loss of those football teams were a real shame.

McGill to SMU - also not a big surprise.
It remains to be seen how many guys the next staff will pull back from the portal, but my guess is not many grads. They have their degrees and 4 years of soul-draining football to move on from.
