USC was dominant over UCLA until UCLA had a 21 to 8 fourth quarter to pull out a 1 point win. We get to play both of them on the road next weekend.
Arizona edges Oregon at home 79-71 in a game that was close the whole way, at Arizona. Arizona was 10/20 from three point range, unlike our 4/20 performance today.
Oregon State defeats Arizona State by 10.
WSU gets its first conference win, defeating cross state rival Washington convincingly, 66-52.
Everyone else now has one conference loss or more. The one loss teams are: Arizona, Utah, UCLA, and Colorado. Oregon is next at 3-2.

(01-08-2023, 07:58 PM)M T Wrote: One of the calls by Missy Barlow today was at the end of a quarter when a player was running to half court and launched a 3pt attempt. A defensive player was just beyond the half court line and had stopped before the shooter took her last step and jumped. The shooter landed on the defensive player's back.
Missy called a foul on the defensive player, presumably a blocking foul. The announcers slightly garbled the call but basically said it was that the defender was not in a legal guarding position. (To be in a legal guarding position, "The guard's torso shall face the opponent.")
"Blocking is illegal personal contact that impedes the progress of an opponent"
"Charging is illegal personal contact by pushing or moving into an opponent’s torso"
I disagree with the call, if that were Missy's reason. She was not guarding the player, so she didn't need to be in a legal guarding position. If a player runs down the court and runs over another player who is not guarding her and maybe didn't see her coming, it is charging. To rule otherwise would cause chaos as offensive players could then run over defensive players who are not guarding them, causing fouls on the defensive players.
Sorry, Missy, I think the call was wrong.
The referee team of Cheryll Blue, Benny Luna and everyone’s favorite Melissa Barlow totally disrupted game flow and affected the final outcome. They whistled 51 fouls, 25 on USC and 26 on UCLA. USC, starting the 4th quarter leading by 12, had four fouls by the 9:14 mark and the refs put UCLA in the bonus at 8:20. USC’s best player Rayah Marshall fouled out with 1:39 left. Post Okunwafo left shortly thereafter. Two other Trojans had 4 fouls late. UCLA lost post Iwuala to fouls in Q4 and two others had 4 fouls. The foul calling seemed terribly inconsistent with brush fouls getting called while other instances of players colliding or getting knocked to the floor going unwhistled.
USC outperformed the Bruins using only seven players as its leading scorer Kari Sissoko sat out with an injury. The Trojans would most likely have won the game if not for the officiating. USC’s five fouls early in Q4 allowed UCLA to make its run and completely affected USC’s play. Hadn’t seen Cheryll Blue much prior to yesterday but I don’t much care for Luna and when I saw Barlow and him on the court before tipoff I commented to my wife that those two will wreak havoc on the game. Barlow can’t retire sooner enough and I hope she takes Luna with her…

Missy has somewhat improved over the years since she cost us an NCAA tournament game in Boise. But Luna has moved up in the ranks of infamy and has overtaken Missy as the worst referee we are likely to see. He makes bad calls with gusto, and seems to relish the boos.

RIGHT? Makes me wanna dress in our opponents' colors, travel to away games and boo at every call he makes in our favor.
On the other hand, if Lauren's younger sister comes to Stanford, and he starts making whackadoodle calls against them, will you promise me we can all start singing "Buh, buh, buh, Benny and the Betts?"

Due to injuries, ASU won't be able to field a team for its matches at Utah and Colorado this weekend; they will have to forfeit those games.

They played with 8 their last game I believe all 8 on scholarship. The forfeits are already listed as that on the ASU web site

injuries -- Or illness? I gather we aren't supposed to know, so I guess that's a rhetorical question.

This article quotes an ASU administrator referring to the non-healthy players as injured. The language for teams that had Covid last year referred to reasons for missing players last year as “health and safety” protocols if it was Covid. LSU had a game canceled for those reason by an OOC opponent. I think a Big 10 game was delayed for same reason.
Would think same language would be used if it was illness. Are the PAC 12 illness protocols that allows games postponed due to illness to be rescheduled?
ASU had to forfeit a game last season for trying to use plane issues to postpone a game and we’re told no when they tried to use travel logistic issues to postpone another game.

Today's games around the top 25 involved only one upset--unranked Florida State beat #11 North Carolina State by 19. Let's hope NC State drops down down down below Arizona where it belongs.

After giving Utah its first loss last weak, Colorado is off to a lead at home against Arizona, 18-8 after the first quarter.
Arizona had a better second quarter. Colorado 31-29 at the half. Neither team can score at all well in the half court, but frequently turn the ball over trying to do so, leading to fast break points for the other team the other way.

Tomorrow, Sunday, Jan 14, there is one interesting game to watch before our own. At 11 am there is Arizona @ Utah which could be a battle for second place, particularly after Colorado handed Arizona a defeat yesterday. Utah and Colorado had it easy having only to prepare for 1 opponent while Arizona had to prepare for two.
We play at 2:00.

Almost! We've got to get CSU Bakersfield to play South Dakota for the classic roadrunner/coyote matchup! Though I imagine the Bakersfield Roadrunners have played the San Bernadino Coyotes before.
There is something too perfect about 118-59, made me think it couldn't be real!

I think the last time-out was a mistake.

What a great win for Utah over Arizona S Pili makes two FTs with less than a second to play
With 2-3 seconds left Arizona scored for what looked like was the win
Ucla up by 2 at the half over cal
