RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - paloalto - 09-02-2024

What a great match for Stanford.    Sure exceeded my expectations.  Rubin is one of the ten best all around OHs in the country.  Oglivie had some unbelievable saves in covering the block.   At times Harvey goes into uncanny mode at serving.  Harvey also completely turned her game around at the net from yesterday.

I couldn't watch the end of the match.  Why wasn't Oglivie on the court?

The rules have changed so much I don't know if that would be considered a double touch.  Back in my playing days that 100% would have been called a double contact (assuming it didn't touch the floor).  I'll have to look at a replay.  I can't remember if that was on the dig (first touch of the ball hit over the net from the opponent).

She was on the court.  She received Fuerbringer's serve on the final point.

I thought the handwringing yesterday was a little overblown, but even I wasn't sure they could handle Wisconsin after the way they had played.  Amazing turn around for Ipar Kurt (though she was less effective in the last two sets).

Well 3 - 1, but still very nice.

Mods - this thread started in 2021 and is very difficult to manage for somebody who doesn’t check in regularly.
Can it be broken up to something manageable?
Like just this season?

Stanford opened the season last Friday with a sweep of UW Milwaukee then beat Minnesota yesterday and Wisconsin today. That's 3-0 as far as I can tell. Match #4 is Wednesday at Marquette.

I see it differently.  I like the way this thread is set up.  As a WVB fan this is where I come to first.  It seems clear to me this thread is now for the 2024 season.  But maybe not?

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BosCard - 09-02-2024

I like this team a lot. I’m know people say this team might be grittier than last year but I think the difference is back row defense.  Last year both Kipp and Baird played 6 rotations.  They are both big physical front row players but we lost a lot of points because of their first touch when they were in the back row.  I’m not saying this years team is better but the floor defense and block/tip coverage is much much better and I like this style of volleyball, just dig everything and give Miner a settable ball to work her magic.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 09-02-2024

Great points BosCard. Also more sets to the middles and Andrew is an excellent
Recruit. We are young and certainly growing fast

Aha!
You were counting overall record while I was counting sets vs Wisconsin.
That confusion shouldn’t reappear this season.

Agree 100%. It’s been fun watching this bunch. Looking forward to possibly a terrific season.

I am going to split it by season as we do for the other super long threads. I'll make sure the old threads are easy to find by putting a back pointer into the first post of each new thread.

minnesota over texas in 5 sets

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 09-02-2024

Minnesota just beat Texas in 5

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Griffins78 - 09-02-2024

I love the start to our season! Agree - we’re much stronger offensively in the middle which makes us more diverse and difficult to defend and it appears we’re playing even faster. This year. Defensively, our block isn’t as strong yet but our defense seems to be stronger

Was the question about why Oglive wasn’t on the court directed at me?  We won the last four points of the first set on the one serving rotation the libero has to sit out, as the Libero can only serve in one position on the scoresheet.  Taylor Yu was serving in her stead.

On the double contact, you may be right.

Quote:The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved allowing women's volleyball players to contact the ball more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt on a team's second contact when the ball is played to a teammate.

That seems crazy to me, though I guess the rule was borne out of the fact that frequently, determining whether a contact was a single or double touch is a difficult judgment call, though this one wasn’t a matter of judgment; it hit her hand first and then hit her foot.  Anyways, since it was the first touch, by the new rule it is not considered a fault.  I take back my criticism of the announcers.

Making the referees’ job even more difficult. Sheesh.

Wow, this is looking like an exciting season.  Has parity taken over the top 20 teams?

I assume your comment about yesterday's criticism of Stanford in the Minnesota match was directed toward me since you quoted my post.  The entirety of my comments about the Minnesota match include:  I complimented Rubin.  I complimented Cawa. I complimented the middles.   The only comment I made that might be considered criticism was I asked a question about Yu's serving.

I was silent about Kurt because I'm a fan of Kurt having seen many videos of her playing in Turkey.  She is a crafty hitter in the front row.   I expected her to eventually show that.

Paloalto,
Sorry, my comment was not directed at you.
I quoted you because you made the statement about Oglivie not being on the court at the end of the match, which was not true.

I then made a separate comment which was really about the discussion on volleytalk, where there was so much doom & gloom.
Certainly not aimed at you.
My apologies for not making that clear.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - paloalto - 09-02-2024

Please, I didn't make a "statement" about Oglivie not being on the court.  I asked a question about her not being on the court because I didn't see the end of the match and there was a comment  about her not being on the court.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - M T - 09-03-2024

Yeah, we won!  We can take a breath and enjoy it.
