Nobody mentions this, but a fairly large share of Turley’s acolytes were subsequently suspended by the NFL for violating the PED policy.  As far as I know, no one was ever found to have been using PEDs while at Stanford, but let’s just say that if we found out that Turley’s miraculous turnaround was pharmacologically aided, I would not be at all surprised.

High was 1st Team All-MEAC + he had a 70 yd reception against Tennessee Tech and a handful of 35+ yd receptions in other games.  Have we ever had a FB (or other sport) xfer from a HBCU?

Johnson saw action in 5 games this past season.

These guys both have a couple of years of eligibility left - good deal.

Yep, Sam. Sounding good. Never mind re Turley. Are there any others potentially in the pipeline?

Johnson played in 14 games this past season, racking up 36 solo tackles and 6.5 TFLs. I'd pencil him in to rotate in as a co-starter or similar.

I'm genuinely excited about seeing whether the defense can continue its improvement under April.

RE: Football Offseason / Transfer Portal - JJJ - 01-05-2025

Perhaps already covered here or elsewhere, but when I was watching the hoops broadcast, the announcers mentioned that Stanford won’t take undergrad transfers with only 1 year of eligibility remaining. It makes sense when you think about it, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it stated explicitly like that. So that’s my one new thing I learned today (or was it yesterday? Never mind).

makes sense given you can only bring in "up to" 90 units as a transfer

on Caden High

https://hbcusports.com/2025/01/05/south-carolina-state-leading-receiver-making-jump-to-power-4-school/

Quote:The all-purpose receiver began his college career at Benedict in 2023, making an immediate impact as a freshman.

He led the team with 47 receptions for 781 yards (998 all-purpose yards) and nine touchdowns.

This included a SIAC championship performance in which he caught nine passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.
When Benedict head coach Chennis Berry was hired by South Carolina State, High followed suit, transferring to play for the Bulldogs.

High was the number one offensive weapon on a South Carolina State team that won the MEAC title and clinched a berth in the Celebration Bowl.

He led the Bulldogs with 62 receptions for 908 yards and seven touchdowns, along with 117 rushing yards on 13 attempts.

RE: Football Offseason / Transfer Portal - needle - 01-05-2025

Yale WR David Pantelis is a grad transfer who reportedly is signing with Stanford: https://x.com/StanfordRivals/status/1876110508476301341

I haven't been impressed with any of the offensive transfers so far, but I am very impressed with Pantelis' highlight reel. I think he potentially can be a major part of the offense next season:  https://x.com/yalefootball/status/1865102487578960077?t=oGroIwPXak9qDV7xSIBaeQ&s=19

RE: Football Offseason / Transfer Portal - fullmetal - 01-06-2025

Tying up one loose transfer portal end: Ben Yurosek finishes his career at Georgia with 15 receptions for 185 yds on the season.  Don't know how much of a difference he could have made this season for Stanford, but I feel like he should have been able to do more at Georgia.

I wonder if the students really understand how much they're rolling the dice when you enter the transfer portal. When he was healthy at Stanford, he was a starting, star tight end who caught 91 passes for 1,098 yards in two years. Big, big dropoff to backup at Georgia. What does the NFL think when they see the big dropoff? Did it turn him from a 3rd/4th round pick to a 6th/7th/UDFA?

RE: Football Offseason / Transfer Portal - 82lsju - 01-06-2025

the Daily has updated their list of portal coming and goings here

https://stanforddaily.com/2024/12/06/stanford-football-transfer-portal-tracker/

I would assume any undergrad transfers for winter quarter have happened given the quarter starts today, not sure if grad transfers have a different winter quarter start date.

Sorry to lose Baklenko, McLaughlin, Cisse and Fausto- Ramos, but I THINK we came out ahead. I liked Daniels more than some here, but if we aren't going to be a power running team we need a consistent passer to go with our pretty good receiving crew, and to entice good TE's. TT thought he signed "his QB", and now we will see if he was right or not. His time on the Farm most likely depends on him being right.

While it is possible that other portal prospects could be admitted to Stanford for spring quarter or later, I am assuming that none of the QB transfers we were pursuing are still in play. Anybody know if that is the case?

Assuming that is the case, I hope the QB that reference to "his QB" is Bear Bachmeier. Given our OL struggles, and the fact we don't have four or more highly sought after OL signed from the portal, I can only assume we will need a QB that is a dual threat. We do have two OL from the portal that may be an upgrade. This might help. However, even if we improved our receiving crew, we almost certainly still can't protect a drop-back passer well enough to make it a viable option. Daniels undoubtedly set a ceiling on how good our team could be with his lack of accuracy (and other things as well) in the passing game. That said, his running ability also set a floor.

If the theory is that Brown is the answer, I worry that the floor will be a lot lower. He is not a dual-threat guy. Bear Bachmeier may have a much higher ceiling and at least a similar floor (as a runner) to Daniels, but he will be a freshman thrown into action. That isn't nearly as unusual as it was in the past, but it still has its problems. Am I correct in assuming this is where we are?

Yes, you are correct in assuming that we still have no reasonable expectation of being able to block anyone.

This means the outlook remains grim, and we'll need to see unexpected levels of player development if we are to have a chance at a better season.

Bear Bachmeier is in the Stanford online directory, so I assume he's an early enrollee (the December announcement from Stanford football stated there would be three early enrollees, but didn't name them). If that is accurate, then I think he will compete for playing time as a freshman. But I hope Stanford does sign a QB transfer, even if it's in the spring.

Nobody mentions this, but everyone wonders about it. You just said the quiet part out loud.

I think this is one of the better theories for why we were great in the trenches during the Turley period. He might not have directly pushed PEDs, but just knowing or hinting about PEDs and looking the other way would be enough to warrant dismissal if someone complained.

That said, I believe (without hard evidence) that PED use is endemic to football and starts early. So when you're recruiting 4* and 5* kids, especially in the trenches, some of them have already done PEDs and that's part of how they achieve standout physiques and performance.

I hate to take anything away from everyone's hard work and accomplishments. By no means are all athletes juicing. But as you say, there was quite a bit of smoke around the Stanford program's use of PEDs in the early 2010s based on subsequent suspensions in the NFL and Turley's eventual suspension and dismissal.
