One more thought on LB/DL.  Uriah Leiataua was on the verge of committing to Stanford prior to his mission.  I highly doubt he would come to Stanford instead of staying with his commitment to BYU, but anything is possible.  I suspect we will be in the dark until very late in the process since kids on their mission don't communicate much with people back home during the mission.

All interesting additions.  I am trying not to sound too sanguine, because some veterans of these boards think that I have been, all the way back to Teyo, Amon, and Eric Lorig. 

I've whiffed many times, of course; I thought we'd get Travis Leitko and still am bewildered by his decision to go to Notre Dame. I thought we'd get long looks from Nick Watkins and Todd Kelly.  And while I never assumed we'd land Christian Wilkins,I'd never have guessed he'd choose Clemson. 

But this 2016 group seems more passionate about Stanford than any that I've followed.  And we definitely have become better known nationwide, even in just the last three years.  The five bowl game and Richard Sherman Effects look strong, and A Luck helps us too.  And it also seems kids are thinking more about the 40 Year Decision, and are more aware for the reason why many people think NFL translates best as "Not For Long." 

Good signs, I think.  Many of them.

I (and presumably other posters) do not come to The Cardboard for blow-by-blow football recruiting analysis. I like this board for many reasons, but I consider it a great plus that with the "Class of xx year" threads I can pretty easily avoid recruiting talk.

No offense to needle, but I just hope this comment doesn't have a chilling effect.  I find Hulk's commentary on recruiting and all things Stanford football to be among the top reasons I visit this site.  I also consider occasionally meandering or misplaced threads a very small price to pay for free content.

My posts didn't feel like thread additions.  In fact, the defensive post alone was so long that I had to break it into three parts. 

Plus I really wanted to get feedback from fans who might have more information about each of these guys--say, Slide's frequent valuable adds on guys from Coca Cola country. 

I meant to say "Class of 2016" not just "2016," but my age and complex of learning disabilities all but ensured that I would forget.

Yvonne added the Recruiting Talk board http://thecardboard.org/board/index.php/board,10.0.html originally with the idea that with a dedicated board, we wouldn't have to stuff all FB recruiting posts into one giant thread per year. But people had trouble finding the separate board and so we ended up almost back where we were: one giant thread about the currently active recruiting year on the main board and one giant thread about next year as the one and only thread on the Recruiting Talk board. Sigh.

I had the same reaction: We look thin at OL on this list.

But offensive linemen tend to volunteer less information than other players. A chatty OL is as common as a self-effacing cornerback. 

Partly for that reason, perhaps, OLs also attract fewer interviewers. So we end up getting less information about them and their college plans.

So I've no reason to rule out Farniok, the South Dakota OL.  But his most obvious comfortable choice would be the neighboring U of M, which may be on the upswing but is crowded, cold, and likely to be helpless against the New Ohio State, revived Michigan, and rebounding Penn State.  But Midwest linemen rarely go far from home.  My guess is that Madison will look more than good enough if Minnesota does not, and I wouldn't rule out Iowa because it does churn out good OLs, and in warmer weather than he suffers in in South Dakota.

It's hard to pull OLs out of Wisconsin, so it's easy to stick Ben Bredeson in the next-to-no chance list.  Wisconsin kids think UW is hard to beat for its combination of football and academics.  Throw in semi-professional drinking and partying and we're steps behind.

We just may have to wait longer here, but it does seem near-certain we will have to offer more OLs.

Just thinking here....perhaps, the home page for anyone logged in should be the "Show unread posts since last visit" page to help people find posts on segmented portions of the board. It may encourage even more posts.

In regards to posting these types of recruiting summaries if you are not interested in the topic, don't read it. Recruitniks like myself love this kind of information. Thanks a ton, Hulk!

A quick historical note.

The first Stanford fan boards tended to be recruiting boards with occasional tidbits of depressing in-season news about our last defeat or our inevitable next one.  Recruiting, however, held out this small promise of an End to All Of That.  Just one guy in some Top 250 could send us into fits of optimism.

As our teams improved, they gave fans something else worth talking about.  Now we see far more posts on current players and prospects for upcoming games.  It's a new day, and so welcome.  But I've kept the old interests and habits, partly because I relate to these kids and live their choices vicariously, even getting to know a few of them and their families each season. 

I'm sure it's not everyone's deal, but what is? I have no interest in women's basketball, for example, and can't name our starting lineup in basketball, and can name one of our baseball starters only because his name is Zach Hoffpaiur.  But, odd to most, I can name all of top seven golfers and can probably tell you where each of them are from.

No offense to anyone else, but I find Hulk's posts to be the primary motivating factor for my visits to the CARDboard. If they get lost in the morass that the general recruiting thread inevitably devolves into, I'll be very disappointed.

My instinct is to assume that kids from boring towns with freezing weather (Eric Cotton, Harrison Phillips) will want to get out.  I know that's wrong more often than it's right, but it's always my first instinct and I would never be surprised to see a kid from South Dakota choose to spend 4 years in a great location like Palo Alto.

Thinking some more about our South Dakota kid.

Many of us think of South Dakota and big farm kids, and there are lots of them.  But Farniok's hometown, Sioux Falls, is one of those typical, white collar professional centers that slowly emerges in smaller states like South Dakota.  They become the medical and legal centers for the region, and end up with many well-educated professionals, many with advanced degrees.  (Sioux Falls has over 30,000 people--of its quarter million population--employed in health care, over 15,000 with just two brobdingnagian companies alone.) mcities, and often are attracted to much larger cities for post-high school. 

Another factor at work there has been the lack of a state income tax.  I know this well; one of my clients lives near me but has his large and growing insurance company in Sioux Falls, and my clients Wells Fargo and CitiGroup have big operations there.

So we really are dealing with what only appears to be a small farming town.  It's really more like a typical affluent suburb of a large Midwest city. 

For this reason, Farniok might find us very attractive.  Kids in this region like to go some place bigger, and often some place warmer.  Arizona is a big draw, not least of all because the more affluent families often have second homes or time shares there,

Hulk- my guess is that you are from California as I found many people from California group all the states in the middle of the country together.

South Dakota is nowhere near Michigan. It is not driveable.  Sioux Falls is a lot closer to Boulder than it is to Ann Arbor.  Ann Arbor is hundreds of miles closer to Washington DC and New York City than it is to Sioux Falls.  I grew up in Michigan and we considered South Dakota to be the wild West not the Midwest.  From Sioux Falls to Ann Arbor is a connecting flight through Minneapolis to Detroit versus a connecting flight through Denver to San Francisco if going to Stanford.  Longer distance to attend Stanford, yes, but Michigan is not a neighboring school.

And why not?  Rivals is showing him with a Stanford offer.  His brother went to Stanford, and Stanford has a pretty strong history of landing siblings.  He wouldn't have a Stanford offer if he wasn't at least in the ballpark of admission.
