USF, 1951 season.  Cal and Stanford played USF in 1950 (both USF losses, BTW), both refused to schedule USF in 1951. Ranked #13 after a perfect season, USF had two African American players, and the Bowl games were all in the Deep South. They were invited by the Orange bowl, but had to leave Ollie Matson and Burl Toler at home.  Players unanimously voted to tell the bowl game to pound sand.

BTW, the Orange Bowl denies all of this. Said it never happened, said they invited two higher ranked teams, #9 Baylor and #4 Georgia Tech.

1951 was the last year USF played football. They closed their 9-0 season with a 20-2 victory over Loyola. USF's team produced nine NFL players, five of which became Pro Bowlers, three of which became Hall of Famers (St. Clair, Marchetti and Matson). Pete Rozelle was their publicist. Burl Toler became the first black official in the NFL.

Giants.... USF was scored upon, still looking for un-scorded upon team and since USF has given up football...TWICE... they are not a future Stanford opponent.

2018 Baltimore Orioles finished 61 games behind. Worst since '63, American League.

Ted Simmons one of the HOF catchers who hit L&R. One more and three LF hitters remaining.

Also Mick alluded to the all time HOF member king of not striking out. Still looking for the name. It wasn't Ray Schalk.

A brief non-trivia observation…

A look at future Stanford football schedules (prompted by the Colgate question) shows 15 out of conference games scheduled after 2024.  Of those, there are are no games scheduled against either Big Ten or ACC opponents (with the exception of a home and home v. BC).  Given the tentative Alliance scheduling plan that has been discussed, it will be interesting to see how Stanford addresses this issue.

Logan Webb currently has an 18 game string of starts without a loss. Who was the last Giants pitcher with a longer streak of starts (21) without a loss?

Good guess, Greenwood is #3 with 38 major leaguers and Holy Cross, also in Brooklyn has 38 (Gil Hodges).  Cobb is in Rosehill in Georgia, Pee Wee Reese is in Rosehill in Kentucky.  Don't know about Chicago.  Calvary in Woodside NY has 38 (Wee Willie Keeler), Inglewood in LA has 36 (Sam Crawford, Bobby Wallace - maybe the most obscure Hall of Famer).  New Cathedral in Baltimore has just 18, but four are Hall of Famers (Hanlon, Kelley, McGraw, Robinson).  And I should point out that 16 are in Arlington National Cemetery, largely unknown.

The second most, with 55 former MLB players, is at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.  Frankie Crosetti, Joe DiMaggio, George "High Pockets" Kelly, and the immortal Cy Falkenburg -- who gave up Ty Cobb's first hit.

Attended many burials at Holy Cross. My mom is there, grandparents, aunts and uncles, pals, enemies, priests, enemy priests, etc.

We went to Green-Wood a couple years ago. It is a quite the place. Andrew Cartwright (the father of baseball) is buried there. Baseball fans leave baseballs at the base of his tombstone. There were quite a few there when we visited the cemetery.

Like Green-Wood, Rosehill in Chicago is an enormous cemetery so I figured there might be quite a few ballplayers buried there. From a baseball perspective, it is notable because of the number of Cubs fans who went there after the Cubs’ World Series win to leave mementos at family gravesites.
