Washington - TrumpCard - 10-18-2015

What do you all think of the UW team that Stanford is going to face next Saturday?

UW is 2-3 against FBS opponents, which sounds like a pretty bad record, but I think this team is more dangerous than its record indicates.  The losses were by 3, 6, and 6, so the team has been in the game every week.  UW also won on the road at U$C, so you know that UW has the ability to win, even on the road, if it keeps the game close.  If UW's true freshmen starters at QB and RB play mistake-free football, this could be a tough game for Stanford.  A big key will be for Stanford to get penetration against UW's offensive line because that is likely to result in errors by the freshman QB and RB.  Kalambayi has the potential to be the difference-maker, but opposing QBs have juked him out of a number of sacks this season.  It's time for him to connect.

Re: Washington - OutsiderFan - 10-18-2015

Washington has no offense, probably the worst in the conference.  Stanford will win by 3+ TDs.

Stanford's best opportunity to pitch a shutout, but it might be 24-0.  UW's defense is pretty stout but it will fade if it spends 40 mins on the field.

Re: Washington - stupac2 - 10-18-2015

I think we win this game easily, but it'll be a good yardstick. So far Washington's defense is the best we face until ND, so seeing how we do against them will be informative. If we can hang 40+ on them then I like our odds against anyone in the country.

Re: Washington - French Rage - 10-18-2015

Is UW more of a run or pass team this year?

Neither...at least when I've been watching.

Per ncaa.com's stats, Washington is the #70 passing offense (227/g) and #112 rushing offense (124/g).

Re: Washington - CTcard - 10-18-2015

Some UW info.

Record 3-3
wins: 49-0 Sac St, 31-17 Utah St, 17-12 U$C
losses: 13-16 Boise, 24-30 C.A.L., 20-26 Oregon

Summary Stats:
Defense: Total D yds/gm 345.3 (32nd), yds/play 4.68 (25th), pts/game 16.8 (16th), pts/drive 1.64 (32nd), yds/drive 31.6 (56th), S&P+ (7th)
Offense: Total O yds/gm 351.3 (101st), yds/play 5.70 (60th), pts/game 25.7 (88th), pts/drive 1.63 (99th), yds/drive 27.1 (100th), S&P+ (80th)

Usually when advanced stats like S&P like a team better than related raw stats (like yds/pts per drive) then it's because of tougher opposition. I think among Boise, $C, c.a.l., Oregon that UW has played some good offenses.

Just as how the last several years the key was that our defense controlled the game, protecting the offense as necessary; I think that this year and this game the key is that our offense controls the game. Our defense is good enough that if we can keep them off the field as usual, UW won't score much.
Northwestern stopped our offense cold. Could UW? I would think not, but they are stout up front and it's possible they could handle our run game. We need to run enough - and Hogan will likely have to throw a little more than what has become standard just lately.

Re: Washington - washingtonismoney - 10-18-2015

I haven't seen all of UW's games, but at least part of their effectiveness against SC was their opponent's willingness to forego running. Which was generally pretty effective.

Re: Washington - TheFarm07 - 10-18-2015

If Hogan can establish early in the game that he can make some passes to Hooper, Cajuste and co., then the Huskies' D can't just load the box against McCaffrey and that will give him some more running room as the game goes on.

Re: Washington - Spiny_Norman - 10-18-2015

Pay attention to the injury reports from UW this week.  Their frosh QB Jake Browning injured his right (throwing) shoulder vs. Oregon.  At this point we don't know if he will play vs. Stanford.

Edit - sorry, the separate thread about Browning's injury was on the 2nd page of the Cardboard and I did not see it until after I posted.  Should these threads be combined?

Re: Washington - 81alum - 10-19-2015

Washington is 16 in scoring defense nationally, 32 in total defense.  By comparison, Note Ur Dame is 41 in scoring defense and not in the top 50 in total defense.  Northwestern is 12 in scoring defense and 18th in total defense.

I would certainly think we should beat Washington, however, the Northwestern game is a reminder that a good defense can, if the stars align, beat a good offense.  We must not be overconfident given the one experience we have had with a pretty good defense--that wasn't pretty.

By the way, we are 39 in total defense and 37 in scoring defense.

All these stats are still a little fuzzy given we are only halfway into the season.

We on The Cardboard can be as overconfident as we want (though, from a purely psychological perspective, I wouldn't recommend it). Does anyone actually think the team is going to overlook anyone this year? That's the perverse beauty of the loss to Northwestern, it made it crystal clear what can happen when you don't play your best against a lesser opponent.

Also, Safety Brian Clay is suspended for the first half of the game against us for targetting.

Re: Washington - PrinceLightfoot - 10-19-2015

Great information being shared in this thread!

I think UW will score 3-13 points on our defense.

Their defense is pretty good, but we are also a pick-your-poison type of offense right now. We ran a ton last week because we really did not need to pass. I think we will put up 30-44 points.

I want to re-watch their USC and Oregon games before posting a final prediction, but my gut says Stanford 37 - Huskies 9.

Re: Washington - washingtonismoney - 10-19-2015

Washington's defense hasn't given up over 6 yards per play or 30 points. I'd be pleased if Stanford could score just over 30 points and just over 6 ypp.

On our first string I agree.  But I think like Thursday we will see a lot of guys with clean pants playing in the fourth quarter.

I'm not expecting any garbage time.  Washington has a poor offense but their defense is nasty enough to throw a fire blanket over our offense.
