Putting compensation aside, is South Carolina a better job than Arizona?
In the SEC East the big dogs are usually Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. And recently, Missouri has been doing well. In the Pac-12 South, it's USC and UCLA, and maybe ASU that are consistently on top. Think of Utah as maybe Missouri. I'd say the SEC is on balance tougher to win at South Carolina than the Pac-12 is at Arizona. But neither South Carolina or Arizona has ever won their conference anyway. As far as resources go, there are only three major state universities in Arizona; UA, ASU, and Northern Arizona. The only real advantage South Carolina has over Arizona is that SC probably produces more elite football talent than AZ. Â
I'd say South Carolina is a lateral move at best. What do others think?

The article linked there -- which is insider, so subscriber-only -- doesn't really make South Carolina out to be a better job per se than Arizona, just one that might fit Rodriguez better.

He seems to have the busiest agent in the business. He is named to almost every position that comes up. Don't know why he would leave. He has already had more success than Arizona fans are used to. Why trade that to go somewhere else? Seems like he is trolling for an extension.

The state of South Carolina has far more high school football talent than Arizona, and the Gamecocks draw well from North Carolina, too, and are the number one college draw in their state, which Arizona isn't.
Arizona and ASU lose many of their homestates best hs players to other Pac 12 teams--notably, Stanford: Tucker, Martinez (Arizona passed on him, of course), Peat, Murphy. But Rodriquez's staff has compensated by recruiting California well, after doing almost nothing in that state before he arrived.Â

Spurrier was reportedly making $4 million at South Carolina, while Rodriguez makes about $1.5 million.

I agree, but there is the glitter of the SEC to go after.
I thought It odd when Bielema left Wisconsin to move to Arkansas but there you go.
I suppose there is something to be said for playing somewhere where people care, even if it is because there is not much else to get excited about....

Wisconsin keeps losing coaches to lateral-at-best moves, so I think there's something else going on there.

It has to rub a football coach to know that he's second banana at his own school. He'll never supersede the basketball program in local popularity and importance.
And how can you set aside compensation? Doubling your paycheck is a very strong draw.
I have to chuckle at people arguing that the SEC East is tougher than the Pac12 South. Don't we usually argue that the SEC reputation is overblown and undeserved?

I don't know if being second banana is such a bad thing anymore. If the pay is good enough and no one is bothering you at dinner with your family about last week's play calling, that has to be better than living in a small town where everyone lives and dies with the team's actions.
Rich Rod has already taken Arizona to a Pac-12 championship game, which is way more than anyone expects from them. I agree that the Pac-12 South is at least as competitive the SEC East. I can see the jump to a blue-blood with built-in advantages, but South Carolina isn't that kind of program.

Would Rich Rod get a look from US.C (Hollywood variety)? I think he'd be a better personality fit in LA than Utah's Kyle Whittingham who is getting a lot of media play.
Of course I mean after they get turned down by Pete Carrol, Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh. ::)

Is Rodriguez a bad fit at Arizona? He seems to have done pretty well, didn't he just win coach of the year?
And would the cocks pay him that much more? I mean, Spurrier got paid a lot, but Spurrier has/had one of the best college coaching track records, Rich Rods is not nearly as impressive.

I don't think you can put compensation aside. For most people, it's an important issue.

If jobs are generically similar, then unless you know the guy and his situation, it's pretty impossible to determine what is a better job in his eyes. Maybe he loves the attention and adulation. Maybe he hates the pressure. Maybe his best HS buddy now lives in South Carolina (or Arizona). Maybe he just had a fight with his AD. Maybe he has a hankering for boiled pigs feet, or jalapeno peppers.
If you know they guy, or followed him closely, maybe you have an idea about all this. If you occasionally watch their team on Saturdays, you probably don't.
As for Bielema, rumor has it that he (and Andersen) left Alvarez more than they left Wisconsin (though Andersen also complained about having to recruit players who could read and write).

Rodriguez's record at Arizona --
    Overall Conf.
2012Â Â 8-5Â Â 4-5
2013Â Â 8-5Â Â 4-5
2014Â 10-4Â Â 7-2Â South champion
2015Â Â 5-2Â Â 2-2
Total 31-16 17-14
Rodriguez's overall record is inflated by his 12-0 regular season non-conference record against a very weak group of opponents -- Texas San Antonio, Northern Arizona, Nevada Las Vegas, etc.

So you're saying he would feel right at home in the SEC?

We also have to figure that his experience at Michigan, dealing with their boosters and fans, may have left a bad enough taste in his mouth that he might avoid coaching at the traditional perennial power football schools.
South Carolina makes sense if he has the choice.

Supposedly coaches don't like working for Barry Alvarez. Take Gary Andersen, the previous Wisconsin coach. At Utah State, he has a mobile QB in a spread-to-run offense. In Oregon State, he chooses a true freshman -- reputed to be more athlete than passer -- to play in his spread-to-run offense. Man, he must really like spread-to-run offenses.
Well, except for Wisconsin, where he played an I-formation, pound it between-the-tackles offense. (We can only speculate about the size and plushness of the fainting couches of some Stanford fans watching the Wisconsin offense.)
Hmmmm, I wonder why that was.
