garvin, the idea that SC strongly prefers coaches with SC ties isn't unique to this reporter; a lot of sports reporters opining on the hire have brought this idea up. (Indeed, Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel asked Matt Leinart this question -- whether it's right to "go outside the family" for the hire, as if SC were some sort of mafia family -- and Leinart answered, "Yes," with great gravity and solemnity.)
So who knows whether this will pertain for their next hire or whether it takes a third mistake to bring them to their senses.

Seems odd to me that Yikes would be on the list for coaching hires. His record is far from exemplary.Â
He took a Cal team that was 3-9, then went 1-11, then 5-7, and looks to improve further this year. The upward trend is encouraging, but consider that in the 3 years before Tedford was fired he won 8, 5, and 7 games respectively, so it's not like Yikes inherited a perennial bottom feeder. I'd say that on the whole he has done an OK job, and certainly would keep him around to see if the trend stays upwards and how he rebounds after Goff leaves. But hire him away for the USC job? You'd have a lot of angry Trojans, which is fine by me.

The whole "hire someone with school X connections" thing never made sense to me for supposedly top jobs in CFB. For schools that lack the big name, or schools with unique circumstances (e.g. us), it makes a lot more sense. Most programs run the risk of having their coaches leave for greener pastures if they do too well, so having someone who will at least think twice about jumping for the bigger paycheck due to a hometown connection is a nice luxury. For instance, we may have hit the jackpot with Shaw, who is an excellent coach, has ties to our program and the region, and genuinely seems to love the challenge of recruiting/training true scholar athletes. He may leave us eventually, but it clearly hasn't been for the next big opening to come along.
There are a few programs (and despite my loathing for USC, they are on this list), where it would be unlikely for a coach to skip town for another job within college, and so the benefit of keeping someone with hometown ties is mostly nil. It is extremely rare for a coach to leave these jobs unless they get fired, retire, or take an NFL head coaching job. It may help a bit with recruiting for the HC to sell the school they went to, but on the whole most recruiting is done by position coaches anyway. I don't get it.

Well, the argument is that "ties" don't just tie you down to whatever place, but also allow you to draw from some of the local wisdom. For Shaw, ties likely help him navigate admissions and academics. For Random SC Dude X, ties allow him to navigate the special challenges of the place, such as musical constipation and a certain gigantism of self-regard.

The Chron kind of poo-poos that on what I consider dubious grounds (they claim the Tro.jans only want coaches with U*S*C* connections, but I don't know that Pete Carroll had any) but then goes on to say Yikes will probably be a candidate for some of these other jobs opening up.
If I'm a 59er fan I'm ecstatic about this. My guess is that if Yikes leaves Low APR U after this season he will do so without a single win over any team that finished with a winning record in conference. I still expect Low APR U to win only one more game this season vs. OSU.

I see the rationale for your theory, winflop, but I remember having the same one after Trent Johnson left. That didn't work out so great.
A coach replacing Yikes is thinking:
1) OK, I have to go to a not-terribly-rich school, with
2) not a ton of talent, that
3) ... is replacing a highly-drafted QB, in
4) ... a division with several highly-regarded coaches.
Not the most appealing combination.

Kiffin had USC ties, at least as an assistant to The Man, Pete Carrol, and Sark had both that connection and the SC alum connection, too, and neither were worth a damn.Â
I don't get the "let's get an alum" yen either. My impression from reading and listening to the LA media after the firing, however, was/is that many SC fans favor going outside the Trojan family for the next HC.

Big delta there WIM.
1. Johnson had quality wins and took the team to the Sweet 16, so his leaving actually made a hole. Yikes leaving without a single quality win will leave no such hole.
2. Bumbling Bob had no backup plan. The fact that Low APR U has not engaged Yikes or his agent in any contract extension talks tells me they have to have a contingency plan

Huh? Pretty sure that Bob didn't engage Trent or his agent either before Trent's departure.

I suspect many schools have some preference for a coach with prior connections to the school. And the other way around, also -- many coaches probably have some preference for schools with which they have prior connections. Stanford has hired a lot of guys with prior connections. Walsh, Green, Willingham, Dowhower, and Shaw had been assistant coaches here, while Taylor, Wiggin and Shaw played here.

Much as I loathe SUC, I would like to see them hire someone "outside the box". Because of their NCAA violation problems in the past, I think they will stick with someone with college head coaching experience. Ken Niumatalolo of Navy would be an interesting choice. He's been HC at Navy nine seasons, is of Samoan descent, Mormon (ostensibly squeaky-clean in the lifestyle department), and may appreciate being a few hours closer to Hawaii.

Exactly, and that was part of his failure. He had no regular communication with Trent. But the part I'm referring to is that he was caught completely off-guard when Trent left, and he had no contingency plan. Any major college AD worthy of their position should have a contingency plan for EVERY head coach, and should be in regular communication with all of them.

And yet we didn't seem to have a contingency plan.

However, for a university like Stanford, I think having a coach who was a former player is a very big recruiting advantage. Because of our unusual emphasis on academics, having a coach who has successfully managed that balance in his own life makes him into a powerful symbol of the advantages of making the correct 40 year decision.

Big difference is that Johnson's contract was up and Yikes still has two years left on his.Â
At that point Bumbling Bob HAD to be talking to the coach and his agent unless he had plans to go in a different direction - which he clearly did not.
Yikes still has two years left on his contract, and it's been reported in the press that Yikes' agent asked for extension talks and Low APR U declined to do so. That tells me they know he's at risk for leaving and therefore they need a contingency plan.
But like I said, a good AD ***ALWAYS*** has a contingency plan - for EVERY head coach.
