Stadium scoreboard -
cctop - 10-30-2015
I saw a photo of the old scoreboard in an SFChron story linked on the other thread.
Wow, it was useful. Imagine a scoreboard that clearly displays the score, the time remaining, the down and distance.
If we're going to use the ribbon board, we seriously need some graphic design help. It's too difficult to find this basic information on the sideline board and the font on game scores in the corners is way too small to read from the other side of the stadium.
And the Twitter feed...don't get me started. If we're not going to use the scoreboard to, you know, display the score then we should dedicate the endzone ribbon board to that info:
STAN 72 CAL 3  5:43 4th quarter 1st and 10 on the Stan 43

I'm still baffled by these comments. My uncorrected vision is pretty borderlined these days (I passed the DMV test by the skin of my teeth last year) and I sit in the end zone so I'm as far away as possible, and I can still clearly read the score. The rest of the information took a second to find, but once you know where it is it's just as easy to find as when it was on the board. So where's the downside here? And the upside is that the whole board is now used for live action and replays so you can actually see what's happening, as opposed to it being the equivalent of a 4:3 20" CRT clear across the room last year. I think this situation is much, much,
much better than it used to be.

Yeah I don't have any trouble finding it. One thing I did like that they had last year, which seems to be absent this year, is scrolling through per-player stats. Especially since this year I'm perpetually interested in what C-Mac has thus far.

If there was discussion about this during the offseason, it probably began and ended with "All 50,000 of these people have smartphones." The problem is that with so many smartphones in one place, data speeds slow to a dead stop. I'm sure the stadium has wifi but I avoid connecting to public hotspots.
I don't have a point, just wanted to be involved.

I've always assumed it's terrible and haven't bothered. Does it actually work?

I entirely agree. I think the ribbon could be salvaged if it got rid of a lot of the clutter and focused primarily on down, distance, score, time outs left, and all the stuff that TV routinely puts on a corner of the screen. The way it is currently presented now is certainly not intuitive.

I think a reorganization of the pertinent information within its current section of the ribbon would be fine. Even knowing where it is, it's still a bit cluttered.

I have used it to obsessively track CMacs stats.

I find in stadium Wi-Fi frustratingly slow during the game. It's not bad immediately before or immediately after the game however as a real-time replacement for clear down and distance it is next to useless.Â
For you wifi experts out there - In the early days of wifi wasn't there some discussion on adding "broadcast" capability? Stadiums would be the ideal place for it. There are probably 10,000 people at any one time who all want the exact same information. Why not broadcast it widely to a group rather than require each person to get an individually "point cast" tailored stream?

I was trying to find a picture of an even older scoreboard - but I found this instead.

None of the Stanford-related networks worked for me, but attwifi did (free).
Re: Stadium scoreboard -
BostonCard - 10-30-2015
I think the athletics department subcontracted with att to provide the stadium wifi. Hence attwifi is the correct ssid to use.

Stanford itself has three or four different networks. There's the protected network that Stanford students/faculty/staff can use, there's eduroam (
https://www.eduroam.us/) which allows students and faculty of other institutions to connect (though it doesn't work for me), and there is a guest network. There's also wifi in the dorm rooms.

I've steadfastly avoided Twitter because, well, I'm old. Does it have useful real-time info during game? Is there a particular tweeter-head to follow for that?

I usually follow RJ Abetiya and David Lombardi they typically have a good pulse on the game itself and regular stat updates if you aren't following those yourself.
Unrelated scoreboard issue -

Has anyone else noted that it reads "Stanford Cardinal" above one video board, and "Stanford Stadium" above the other? What's up with that?

And is there anywhere that they show the number of timeouts each team has left for the half? I sure can't find it...

It's in the middle of the ribbon board on either side. There's a number listed next to each team.
