Even those inside the Virginia Tech football building are aware that Rodriguez’s name has been mentioned for years as a possible replacement for Beamer. That buzz accelerated once Babcock arrived, considering he worked with Rodriguez when they were at West Virginia.

The 52-year-old Rodriguez, a native West Virginian, has made it known to those close to him that he’d like to be back closer to home and coach at a place where football is more meaningful than Arizona. Virginia Tech checks both boxes.

Rodriguez is near the top of South Carolina’s list, it was told to me this week. But Rodriguez and South Carolina AD Ray Tanner do not know one another. The relationship with [VaTech AD] Babcock is a potential trump card, and it would expedite the interview/search process.

Rodriguez’s Arizona team was demolished Saturday at Washington, 49-3, but that’s no matter. This is as accomplished a coach that Virginia Tech is likely to get. Rodriguez has won 106 games at the Power 5 level.
