The bottom line - mmboys07 - 11-29-2015

Notre Dame was horrible in the red zone all season, resulting in numerous close games, regardless of opponent quality.  The difference in having upperclassman as key players and freshman shows up the most in the red zone.  Last night Stanford knew exactly what they were going to do and Hogan executed the game plan with confidence.  Notre Dame, on the other hand was tentative in their red zone schemes, and Kizer was not confident at all in execution, which is what you would expect from a freshman.  Having a freshman at running back and tight end didn't help either.  Everyone is trying not to make a mistake, never a prescription for success.  With Zaire at quarterback, Folston in the backfield and Smythe at tight end, and prosise at a wideout along with fuller ND would be 12-0 and headed to the playoffs.  Prosise was only in the backfield because Folston went down.

Re: The bottom line - cardcrimson - 11-29-2015

Wasn't that Cal's problem last week as well? They marched up and down the field, but kicked field games. Could it be our defensive strategy?

I think it absolutely is.  At the Council Lunch Friday, Coach Akina said he'd love to be able to put 11 guys on the line and play press coverage on every snap.  But the reality is that the pass rush is not generating pressure on the QB, and that exposes that kind of coverage to being beat over the top.  I think it's a credit to Lance Anderson that in the last 8 quarters they've only been beaten deep once (twice?).  They have been FORCED to play bend don't break and keep the play in front of them until there's no room on the field to go over the top and they CAN play more press coverage.

On the defense, the biggest disappointment to me has been in the LB area where they were supposed to have strength.  Kalambayi just hasn't gotten it done on the rush this year, and Palma & Perez are either out of position, miss tackles, or lack the speed to chase RBs to the sidelines (or a combination of those).  Those three need to step up on Saturday.

Re: The bottom line - mmboys07 - 11-29-2015

Uh, no.  ND was 0-4 in the Red Zone the previous week against Boston College and barely beat a 3-7 team 19-16.  They were in the top 3 teams in the nation in red zone turnovers.  Their failures last night had nothing to do with the Cardinal "strategy."

Re: The bottom line - OutsiderFan - 11-29-2015

I don't know if it is that simple.  ND gained 533 yards and had a 90 yard KOR TD.  It averaged what, 10 yards per play?  What more could the offense do?  I think the real reason Stanford won was because its offense was incredibly efficient and basically matched ND score for score.  Red Zone decided the game, but it's a little bit of an oversimplification to say if the injured guys played they do any better.  At a certain point you have to credit Stanford for stiffening in the red Zone.

But you know, I have read ND message boards enough to know that ND really should have won every game its ever played, but for lousy play calling, the coaches playing the wrong players, bad official's calls, etc.  The idea of giving the other team credit is a completely foreign concept.  Sure Stanford made mistakes against Oregon and Northwestern, but the better team on those particular days won those games.  Does the better team ever beat ND?

Re: The bottom line - cardcrimson - 11-29-2015

What was the strategy the week before? The on air pundits suggested the way to control Goff was to pressure the receivers and not let them get off the line. Close off the slants and quick throws. Didn't we do the opposite? Play soft and keep everything in front?

Re: The bottom line - yvonne - 11-29-2015

I think we're the only fan base in the country that wants to fire the head coach after a win over a top 10 team. smh

Re: The bottom line - JohnR34231 - 11-29-2015

Injuries are part of the game of football. To say some team would have won a game except for injuries is like saying if your aunt had gonads she'd be your uncle. It might be true, but so what?

Did you post this in the wrong thread?

Anyway, OP, while you're making this point in a petulant and crass way, you're basically right. That ND accomplished this much with so much of the team missing is really remarkable. But I'm not so sure that the team is going to be that much better next year, ND always seems to have larger-than-normal attrition, for some reason, so I'm not convinced those missing players are actually going to see the field.

Come on, Yvonne, no one (at least on this board) has said they want to fire Shaw, or even come close to it. Are you suggesting that if Shaw wins a key game he should be totally beyond criticism?

Care to name names?  There is a WORLD of difference between being critical (with a basis for said criticism) and wanting someone to be fired.

Or to even understand the reasons behind others criticisms. . . .

I don't get it.  Every UDFG alum I know is a great person.  Every UDFG professor I know is a great person.  But UDFG fans -- win or lose -- are among the worst in college football.

Maybe, but pale in comparison to Trojans.

Jeez, use a little hyperbole, and someone will take you seriously.
Yvonne, I thought your comment was worth a good laugh at ourselves.

Yes, we've critiqued this & that about the game, but I don't think anyone has been really critical.  And, of course, no one west of Texas is going to fire a coach over beating a higher-ranked top-10 team.  (But, if you win the wrong post-season tourney, watch out!)

Most of their fans didn't go there.

Who wants Shaw fired?  I never have...I think it's a very small number if any.

I take "needs a smarter coach" to mean "hire someone else."

I guess if we are ever in a calculus war, we may need to look elsewhere for leadership (although that's pure speculation - DS may be a brilliant mathematician for all I/we know), but I wouldn't put too much stock in that one guy's tweet, no matter how fricken' rich he is.

Hey wait a minute.  You don't think DabigV is Vinod do you?  I mean DabigV ripped that tweet in another thread, but that could all be clever ruse. ;)
