OT: Navy Unis -
BostonCard - 11-30-2015
It's football related, so not completely OT, but I have to say, I am impressed with the Navy uniforms for the Army/Navy game.
There are seven different hand-painted helmets, one for each position group, and each depicting a different Navy vessel. They are awesome.
And on the gloves, "Damn the torpedoes"
Go Navy!

P.S. Jacketree... does your son get one?

Phew, for a second there, I thought you were suggesting that the team was going to wear navy uniforms for the CCG.

Thanks for linking BC - I was kind of searching around over the weekend. Those are indeed badass. Holy smokes!
I have lots of Sprint Football swag and his last Nike jersey hangs in his empty room. They switched to UnderArmor last year. They just get the gold helmets; nothing that cool. The tradition is they play Army in these and then the bowl game.
BTW, he just went through service selection* and will commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps (ground). Not seeing the EG&A on those unis - one of these years they need to go all out with that. They could have done the iconic Iwo Jima photo for the linebackers or something. ha ha He was nearly on a submarine (not by choice) and it's good to see the silent service represented on a helmet.
Go Navy! Beat Army!!
Man, Navy came so close this year to having a once in a generation season but they'll finish in their home stadium against rando ACC team.
For those interested, a link to Service Selections for the senior "big boy" Midshipmen (lots of USMC):

Vis a vis his Sprint mates, I haven't seen anything official but the unofficial count (out of 17) based on his sigh of relief for getting what he wanted phone call is 7 Special Forces (SEAL), 2 Explosive Ordinance Device Disposal, 3 Marines (2 air, 1 ground), and the rest Navy Pilot. He said the 7 SEALS are the most out of any sports team in the Brigade. JT Junior put in for an assignment coaching the DBs next year, so now I can rip their strategy straight to his face. He has a good chance with so many SEALS coming from his team. They start right away after graduation. Usually it is 80-90 percent Marine and they can easily delay The Basic School until November, which he wants to do.

Will Huntsman, the only Middie in that list to go SEAL--son of Jon Huntsman (Jr.), former governor of Utah and former presidential candidate. Wow.

Jacketree, I am humbled by what your son and his buddies have been through and now signed up for. Please thank him and them for me and every American.Â

Awesome. Navy has been rolling out some sweet alternates the past few years.
OT in this OT thread: does anyone know why the service academies all seem to employ the same option schemes? Is it a recruiting thing? No shortage of great athletes, but tough to land a good quarterback, in other words.

I think it's a size thing. Hard to fit a 6' 7" 335 pounder into a tank, sub or fighter jet.

I think all service academies have prescribed weight restrictions per height. High-ranking officers have occasionally referred to these as "beauty pageant restrictions," but they still exist, with some slight exceptions for linemen. However, I don't think the exceptions bend enough for the academies to recruit enough competitive linemen...or maybe it's that the blue chip high school line recruits don't see four years of post-graduation active duty service in their future if they want to play in the NFL. Also, could they even get enough congressional nominations...? (Geographic diversity?) So with an undersized line, you run an offense based on discipline, misdirection, and speed.
