Shaw et al. should mention this to David Long, who surely will not find out about this fact otherwise.

No surprise. Durkin was one of those guys who, when I met him, seemed to be destined for a head coaching job.

I wonder if Maryland is a better destination than UCF, which was where I heard other rumors placing him...

Power 5 vs. non-Power 5? Yeah Maryland is better

Not clear.Â
Scott Frost is rumored to have passed up several Power 5 schools. Some folks believe the rationale is his dream job is the Nebraska position and he believes he can make a bigger splash/quicker success at UCF due to recruiting proximity/roster and then be a desirable candidate for one of the upper echelon Power 5 schools (and, perhaps, Nebraska.)
Bottom tier Power 5 schools with structural problems can be career killers. Just ask our friend at Vanderbilt. Or maybe our Frenemy at C.al.

It's not clear that Cal has been a career killer for Dykes. He apparently interviewed at Missouri.

That may make the point, not refute it. I'm not sure Missouri football is a plum assignment right this moment. It would be tough to walk into a situation in which the team threatened to walk out while the season was still going on. Maybe that created solidarity and it has positive momentum in the team dynamics. I do think SD would face some massive difficulties and extensive tension if he remains in his current position next year.

IMO the Maryland job was the best opening. Upgrade stadium and facilities with Under Armour money. Talented players live in surrounding areas (DC, Pennsylvania and Virginia). Plus the opportunity to make the program your own.

My oldest son and I have been brobdingnagian Durkin fans since he came to Stanford under Jim. His football intellect, success and enthusiasm is obvious and I had hoped that he would find his way back to Stanford (along with Mike Sanford Jr). Congrats to DJ. I will now follow Maryland and wish for his success.
Go Cardinal, beat SC!!!

Maryland played Stanford in last year's Amazing Chicken Bowl. They are not a bottom tier Power 5 school.

I was at that game - they'll need more than THAT to establish credentials. ;)
No, I just meant not every Power 5 school job is better than every non-Power 5 job. For Frost they weren't.

Well, you don't know for sure what Frost was offered though the Oregonian has reported he turned down Syracuse.
It also depends upon what you are looking for. If you want a stepping stone, many non Power 5 jobs would be better. Lesser competition means easier to turn around the record and then get recognition for a bigger-Power 5 job a few years down the road. I think it would be easier for UCF with a Florida recruiting base to start beating American Conference teams than going to upstate New York and looking to beat ACC teams (though it is the ACC).
