OT: Cal donor: We like Dykes but can't break bank for him - 82lsju - 12-03-2015

A major Cal donor said he wants Sonny Dykes to remain the Bears' football coach but hopes Dykes understands the athletic department's fiscal responsibilities.

Paul White, the brother of former Cal and NFL star lineman Ed White, said many alums appreciate what Dykes has achieved on the academic side but need to see more success on the field.

...

"I strongly support the cultural change that Sonny has brought to our football program and hope he will stay at Cal," said White, referring in part to the academic improvements Dykes has overseen within the football program. "However, he needs to understand that after the Jeff Tedford contract fiasco, the university is in a position of having to be conservative when it comes to more guaranteed money and a lengthy contract extension."

Yikes probably doesn't given a damn about Low APR U's reluctance to pay him big bucks.  If someone else offers him substantially more he's gonna go.  He has no loyalties to the school.

Yeah,  D.ykes stock may never be as high at California as it is right now.

UCB will be hit hard by graduation and recruiting hasn't been spectacular.  Goff is likely to go and the Pac 12 North is getting more competitive with UW, Oregon, Stanford and perhaps WSU all likely to be ranked above C.al in 2016 preseason polls.  Plus there are a lot of good jobs open - If he doesn't like the fit this is a good year to be looking.

A Southern coach at B.erkeley always seemed like a force fit.

In the meantime, Dykes is looking for a new job, pretty much openly.  Maybe this is just for leverage, but man is he playing hardball if that's what it is.

Quote:That report suggested that, if Dykes left Berkeley, Cal’s administration “would consider bringing Tedford back” as the Bears’ head coach.

That would cause a few heads to explode.

Are you sure it would take more? I think he might even be willing to take a paycut to escape Berkeley. There was a time in November when it looked as though Tom Herman was leaving Houston and there was considerable talk that Dykes would be interested in taking his place. Dykes made $2,000,000 this year while Herman was at $1,450,000.

Come on, man.  We've all had them once or twice in our career.  That job that just sucked.  Every morning you couldn't face dragging yourself to the office or shop or factory or whatever.  The bosses sucked, the customers sucked, the product sucked, the culture triple-sucked and you hoped to either get a new job or get struck by lightning and on most days either option would have been just fine with you...that's what Sorry's going through right now.

Yes and that is how I ended up in Grad school. Working in sales for KNBR and the Raiders drove me to a life of poverty, debt and educating young minds.

Re: OT: Low APR U donor: We like Yikes but can't break bank for him - winflop - 12-04-2015

From the standpoint of pulling off another Willingham I don't care whether Yikes stays or not.  Stanford is going to beat Low APR U again next year.  They will lose so many skill players on offense that it wouldn't matter if Bill Belichick were the head coach.

The only element of interest for me is laughing at Low APR U football and how it can't even retain a mediocre coach like Yikes.

I'm guessing that, most days, you wake up happy, go to bed happy and are happy for the hours in between.

Yes Mick, I truly do. Advocating for undergraduate education and delivering actually measurable learning is highly rewarding emotionally.

The real party playing hard ball is Ca.l.  They gave D.ykes a small extension with a minimal buyout.  Don't even know if it includes a raise of any kind.  They are daring him to go find another job, and aren't raising their offer to keep him.  Usually coaches get raises by going after other jobs.  Ca.l isn't budging.  Never thought I'd see such a bold stance from Ca.l.  We're talking about an institution that paid the legal fees of the party that sued them over the CMS renovation!

he's not going to Missouri, defensive coordinator Barry Odom has been named the program's new coach, the school announced Thursday night.

I think that usually coaches get raises by winning football games.
[And sometime just by existing - as the pay scale has skyrocketed crazily across the land just lately.]

Though of course winning football games also leads to other offers.

In many ways, good for Cal.  It looks like they will be able to keep Dykes without shelling out an outrageous amount for him.  He pushed for a couple jobs hard, but was passed over, because, quite simply, he hasn't demonstrated enough at Cal to get anyone excited.  The trajectory is good, and he did better than I expected this year, but he hasn't put together a "wow" season.

The risk with this approach is that in the next couple years, Dykes will have a great season and be a hot commodity, at which point Cal lowballing him (really, I would say they fairballed him, but in his mind he was given a lowball offer) is a reason to jump.  But that would have been a risk even with a generous offer.  And since there is about an equal risk that Cal tanks in the next few years, Cal did a good job avoiding being saddled with a ginormous buyout.

Spot on, man.

The problem for D.ykes is next year figures to be a very significant rebuilding season for him.  People here have already discussed how good UW is going to be.  Not like Oregon or Stanford are falling behind Ca.l.  They are 4th in North at best in 2016, and depending on how Leach can keep things going and how much improvement OSU makes, D.ykes could lead Ca.l to the cellar and see himself canned next year.  He of course knows all this, which is why he is desperately trying to find another gig.  Knowing his major program head coaching career could be over at this time next year is quite a motivating force to find any power 5 conference five-year deal he can right now.
