Strict bag policy at Levi's, broad definition of weapon - terry - 12-04-2015

Levi's Stadium has a very strict bag policy, which I believe is mandated by the NFL --

http://www.levisstadium.com/bagpolicy/

A warning about the weapons ban -- The weapons ban includes some pretty innocuous items, such as silverware. Also, I have a small screwdriver-penknife-bottle opener attached to my keychain. The penknife is maybe 1.5 inches long. I've been to Levi's stadium four times and didn't have a problem with this the first three times, but the fourth time, I wasn't allowed to bring it in with me.

I didn't  know signs and banners were banned at Levi' s? Is it the same security policy at all  NFL venues?

Does anyone know if this is just at the gate or if they'll hassle you inside the stadium too? I was planning on bringing a collapsible bag and just not using it at the gate, then putting it back together inside. But maybe that's a bad plan. Could also just use a sweatshit as a bag...

Incidentally, this policy is super stupid.

That would make for a very foul smelling bag.

I don't even want to think about that.

Seems like it.  Though I've gotten hassled two of the last three games at Stanford Stadium for my signs.  Given that I assume it will be harder to talk my way past NFL stadium security, I'm not going to bother with the signs or streamers today.

The NFL policy is very real and very well defined. The training of the staff is the issue.

Having run 3 entrance gates at the last super bowl I will just say this. Contraband is well defined, strictly discussed and completely not trained for.

This was at the game, so if you are carrying something they do not like either give it up, hide it or complain loudly.

For instance, while dealing with the NFL staff and their "training staff" last year I was able to get a pistol, 2 knives and an Asp past their training staff and the "detectors" they use.  At the game I got complaints for enforcing their rules and was told by NFL reps to "let it go" even though the items in question were clearly on the no go list.

If you want to get things into a "NFL" stadium you have to be creative or complain loudly. Customer service over safety seems to be their mantra.

I don't care about bags and booze, but please keep the pistols and knives out.  I have no idea what an Asp is, and have a feeling I don't want to know.

Ferrari an Asp is a brand name for a collapsible baton. The one I got past their team is a standard 6" tube that, when given a flip of the wrist, grows to an 18" stick with a weighted ball on one end. Typically I carry it for use in situations where I have been hired for personal protection but forbidden to carry a firearm.

I actually found the security at the RB in '13 and '14 to be much more diligent than my experience working for the NFL.

I was really hoping that you snuck a live snake through security. That would be a much better story. You should try it next time the Superb Owl is in Glendale.

Buddha, I love you for breaking all the stereotypes of professor-types.  That's gotta be the most interesting combination of jobs I've ever seen.  Dean at the University of Arizona and bouncer/body guard/security expert.

Ever have one of your students see you working security somewhere and do a double take?

BC- Funny enough the company I managed until my most recent position (contract said no to "ancillary work that may involve students", think they wrote that in just for me)had the contract on 80% of the greek houses on campus.

I cannot count how many times a student (usually female due to the major I teach in) told her date..."Shut up, that is my professor!" I always mentioned at the start of the term I had 2 jobs and that neither one influenced the other. Compartmentalization is key in that line of work (I have protected some scumbags). Students usually had a harder time with it than me, but by their Jr. or Sr. year they got used to it.

I do have to say that the worst situations were ones where I was working armed work at concerts (protecting the promoter or headliner) an a student would see me walking with my 2 visible sidearms and and another armed team member on my 6 and try to stop me to talk to me. It often made the clients wonder WTF. I had to reassure many clients I was still on point. When I was on duty it was business.

My wife had to check her purse, not really even that big of a purse, but I guess they didn't allow in anything other than a small clutch.  Not complaining, mind you, the bag check seemed efficiently run.  But it was a little surprising since they didn't do that at the Foster Farms Bowl last year, though the security I talked to said it was still in effect back then.  A lot of people seemed surprised by the rule, though.
